Timeline holes were a funny thing, Aster had found. At best, the strangely shimmering rift deep in one of Waterfall’s many rivers could be forgotten about, ignored like it wasn’t even there. After all, who would be stupid enough to dive into the river for one glimmering thing when there were shining crystals and fungi all around them? Unless they were dumb enough to think it gold, and then they deserved whatever was coming to them.
At worst, however, the rift kept him up at night. It made him restless, wondering who or what could come through it. What damage could they do? What horrors could he be witness to, or worse, what horrors could he have to take part in if he was the one who discovered them?
Ultimately, however, the reaction it brought forth most was curiosity, as usual for Aster’s scientifically-oriented brain. He wanted to study it, and study whatever came through it. What sorts of things affected magic and souls in other timelines? What kinds of discoveries could he make, given the chance, and given someone who he didn’t recognize?
Little did he know that as he walked through Waterfall to clear his mind, he was about to find out.

Normally, Aster didn’t get days off. Whether it was paperwork, training Alphys, personal projects, or any number of other things, he was kept busy at an almost-constant rate. But today... god, how long had it been? Weeks? Months?--he was finally granted a day to himself, with nothing to worry about save for what he was going to do.
And what he was going to do was get a fucking drink. He’d spent the entire last two weeks working on a project that wasn’t taxing on his mind or hands, but it was when one considered that he had to deal with ignorant assistants the entire time. Was it just him, or were new graduates getting stupider? Couldn’t have been just him, it had to be that they were dumber than a sack of bricks. He knew how to tell people what to do just fucking fine, thank you very much. Hell, he’d learned from one of the best.
As Aster walked towards the familiar bar in the distance, wrapping his coat around himself (was Snowdin always this cold? must’ve been the time of year), he noticed someone standing outside. Whoever they were, they were bundled up pretty tight, and for a moment Aster wished he’d worn warmer clothing and not been a dumbass. But they were staring inside the window, hovering... what the fuck?
“Oi!” he shouted, waving his arms at the individual. “Either stop loiterin’, or go inside! Lookin’ in the window is fuckin’ creepy!”
This is a starter call! Please like if you would like a short starter between Aster and your muse.
Gramps displaced away as soon as one of Aster’s feet touched, almost to late. A bit more and his rib cage would have probably been kicked in. Again. A snarl almost escaped at the memory.
The hands holding Aster’s arms down released aswell. It was probably a mistake on his part, but both their skulls were already cracked well beyond enough.
He was ready for retaliation, magic and hidden blade alike.
“Have the royal children fallen?”
Aster stood up, gripping his hands into fists as sparks flew from his skull. Still, he did not want to fight, and he was very glad that the other skeleton had released him from his grasp. It was helping him clear his head, at least, but he was still wary, still on edge, still ready to strike if he absolutely had to.
The question caught him off guard, however. The royal children... shit, he hadn’t heard about them in years. Centuries, even. Hell, when they’d fallen, even his sons had just been children themselves. What kind of question...?
“🕆☟📬📬📬 ✡☜✌☟✍”
“Uh, yeah?”
The answer was tentative, a little nervous. Why was he asking this? What could he possibly hope to gain from it?

“Go talk ta someone else ‘bout that, I ain’t in the business a’ fuckin’ gray faces. Much rather see ya in person. Maybe have a couple’a drinks. Get ta know ya a bit.”

“Damn. ‘Least some gray faces got some tact. Why don’t ya come out from behind there? Bet yer not too bad lookin’ yerself.”

He raised a bone-brow at that. Did Chara not even fall down yet? Or had he already died before this Gaster became the royal scientist? This “fell” timeline was very different than his own. In his timeline, Asgore had instated ‘kill or be killed’ after the royal children had died, but was that the case here?
The sudden switch in demeanor didn’t surprise him. Sweet, honey’d words uttered in hopes of getting information; a typical move. It reminded him of the interrogation days of his time in intelligence. He held back a shiver. It would be so easy to reverse the tables to see what the other knew instead.
The itch to do so turned into more of a prodding. He’d gotten his fair share of LV during the war, despite not being on the frontlines as often as others had. That mixed with the urge to protect what had basically become his grandchild(ren) of sorts, and a sort of reflexive defense he had developed after his capture, urged him on. A sly smile, almost matching the other’s spread on his face as his eyelights brightened.
He was on him in a split second, one hand still on his cane, ready to unsheathe the blade hidden within, and another cupping Aster’s chin, bringing his face barely a metacarpal’s length away. Two disembodied hands pinned Aster’s arms to the chair’s in an iron grip. “Tell me, how many human souls does the king have?”
For a split second, the other skeleton didn’t look like he should. For a split second, Aster saw someone else. For a split second, his eyes were wide and fearful, and he looked like he might give in.
But only for a split second.
His feet came down off the desk, aiming to kick towards the other skeleton’s ribcage. Whether or not it connected didn’t matter to him--the intent was all that did matter, and by now there were sparks flickering from the inside of his skull. He let out an angry hiss, like a cornered snake, manifesting his own hands to push at the other Gaster. He had no intent of getting into a huge fight--rather, the kick and the shoving were only to try and get him away.
Aster hated being touched. He especially hated his face being grabbed like that--all it reminded him of was things he’d preferred to try and forget. Things that had come with words, words that at the very least it was unlikely the other Gaster knew. But touching--touching was sometimes enough to send him down for a second, back to childhood, back to days when he couldn’t get away from him.
At least now, he didn’t have any obligation to answer.

“Fuck off! That's not any of your concern, old man!”
*Well, this was interesting.
*Tatters glanced up from a small stack of notes he was sorting to his computer module and noticed that there was a message for him. Now, he understood that his section of the void had been recently opened up by some sort of strange and magical power, but he wasn’t expecting there to be anyone who remembered him, much less anyone who wanted to speak with him.
*He nervously slid over to his computer and sat, hesitating before tapping a few keys to receive the transmission. Turns out this would be video as well.
*The first thing Tatters noticed was the wicked set of teeth this other “Gaster” had and how there were plenty more cracks running along his face. Yikes. Was this one possibly a red magic user as well? Tatters had encountered greens, blues, purples, blacks…but not red yet. Tatters’ coordinates must have been randomly dialed then, for he had no memory of this Gaster. What kind of timeline was he form? And could they possibly trace each others signals in the Void?
*Either way, Tatters responded shakily. ”✡📫✡👈💧📪 ❄👇👋💧 👋💧 👎⚐👍❄⚐☼ ✌💧❄👈☼✍"
*An error popped up in the corner of his screen as Tatters typed quickly, trying to access the other’s signal coordinates. It seemed he would be unable to find out where signal was coming from, but it had been worth a try. Granted, that might mean he just needed to tweak the code a little. Anything related to the Void was tricky business, but with the right amount of manipulation, anything was possible, right?
Ah-ha! Contact!
Fascinating, he thought, poring over the appearance of the opposite Gaster. Wherever they were (definitely somewhere in the Void, though trying to pinpoint where someone was in the Void was like trying to play hacky sack with a cactus--pointless and painful), it seemed like they’d gotten some sort of communication system set up as well. Good. This would make things easier, probably, so long as communications didn’t cut out. Unfortunately, given this being through the Void, that was far too likely.
But this Gaster... in some ways they seemed even more broken than he. The crack gouging up the right side of his skull made even Aster wince sympathetically at how deep and dark it was. Not to mention whatever else the Void had done to the poor bastard, given how tattered and melty they looked.
Aster relaxed back in his chair, reaching over for his coffee mug. He had to steady himself a bit before responding--his hands were shaking like leaves in the breeze.

“Dr. Aster, huh? Going to be honest, I actually didn't expect anyone to fucking reply. Timeline-to-Void contact, you know how it is--tricky business at best. But you must be located in the Void yourself, aren't you?”
The aster didn’t bother him. Much. He just had to concentrate a bit more at first, until it went from a trickling creek to a smooth river. It had been such a long time since he had last heard it. “We may all share a name, and be cursed to fall in the CORE, but no, none of us are the same, or ever will be. I can agree with you there.”
“So you’ve escaped aswell. Hm…” He doesn’t believe he has met any other fragments that have escaped, though granted, he hasn’t met many. “Are we on the surface? Or perhaps you escaped before the seventh human fell?” He was a bit surprised. Inquisitive as he was, he couldn’t help a pang of anxiousness. This could also be a genocide timeline or one where frisk didn’t reset after their last death.
He watched this Gaster carefully, analyzing his reaction and answer, his defense increasing. The prospect of this being a genocide timeline put him on edge, though outwardly he didn’t much show it. The only indications were the hardening of his gaze and slight straightening of his back.
He was close to his own frisk, and although knowing of the genocide timelines (and being witness to a neutral run), didn’t want to think of them in that way. Didn’t want to loop them in with the bloodthirsty beasts he had fought against (Not that the very monster’s of his timeline hadn’t been before the child showed up).
“Seventh hu...what?”
Aster’s eye sockets narrowed as he sat up, gripping the armrests of his chair. Okay, so this Gaster clearly had escaped the Void, also. That wasn’t the trouble, though the fact that he still believed in Gaster predestination in spite of it was rubbing him all kinds of wrong. No, the trouble was that this Gaster was farther ahead. Whatever timeline he’d come from--even if it was most likely similar to Aster’s, judging by the appearance of the older skeleton--was obviously not in the same stage as his.
And maybe he could get information out of that. Information that could get him places in his own timeline. The thought made his smile curl slightly, delighted.
“I’m listenin’,” he said, voice near a purr. “I ain’t ever heard’a no seventh human, but if ya got things ta tell me ‘bout them fallin’ down, I’m aaaaaall ears.” Once again he leaned back in his chair, propping his feet up on his desk as he kept his glance firmly on the other Gaster. “Always did wanna see a human fer myself...”
Oh God, he thought she was still the same doctor from before she kicked the bucket. Perhaps he was just kissing her ass but it annoyed her nonetheless; when they did meet he’d be sorely disappointed. She’s more of someone in need of a doctor rather than one herself.
It helped that Asster didn’t know what she looked like. She’d prefer if he didn’t after the nonsense she sent him. Though even after the episode was over she didn’t seem against the idea to cause some trouble. That’s all she seemed good at doing anymore. Facade just needed to ensure that the few fragments she was close with would be off limits.
She had a sneaking suspicion that the fragment she contacted was from Underfell. If she was right, she’d have alot of explaining to do.
That’s a little complicated. It’s more or less from a place of envy. We’ll have to talk about that more in depth later when we meet in person.
I’m primarily in the void, but I am able to leave for short periods of time. If we plan on doing this for longer, then I’m going to need a human to loan me their body as a vessel. And when we do discuss this further there will be some exceptions to the game.
As for that, I already have that on my list of things that need changing.

A place of--what? Aster leaned forward, taking his feet off of his desk. This reply seemed... far more coherent than the previous, making him wonder if the other one had been a mis-sent mail, or something sent under the influence of. Something.
And a human vessel... loaning their body... as if humans ever made it a couple inches into the underground without getting attacked. Pity, really. He’d always wanted to study one, get them under the microscope, see what made them tick. After all, given his protege’s studies on Determination and how it functioned, the idea of getting his hands on a human... it’d scratch both their itches, most assuredly.
Not that that was ever going to happen. The last human had fallen down when he was still trapped in the Void. What had the King said it was... a yellow soul? The thought that another would fall a mere fifty years later was ludicrous. It took a lot longer than that for any humans to foolishly fall. Too many parents protecting their children, too many people choosing other ways to go.
Still, not replying would be less than ideal. Aster had encountered too many others all-too-willing to exit the Void and go for his throat if he wasn’t careful what he said or did. And even if he was. Ugh.

Hate to burst your bubble, but I don't think another will be falling anytime soon. And people tend to come out of the same couple of places here.
Unless you can get to the surface. Which I highly doubt. Never heard of anyone who's managed that, even from the Void.
