If you had told me 2 years ago that people were seriously, wholeheartedly cross shipping a character played by Markiplier and a character played by Ryan Gosling, there would be no fiber of my being that would ever believe you.
But here we are.
One of the things that I love about Project Hail Mary is that Grace's central question is "Who would you die for?" We see with the other two astronauts that they had family. That's who they're willing to die to save.
Grace? He has no one that he's willing to die to save...
... until he does. Until he makes the decision that he thinks will doom him to die, and he says, "Well, that's worth it, because Rocky will live, and Rocky's people will live, and Rocky will see Adrian again."
And—to put this one up on the list for my ace/aro compatriots—that love is a deep and abiding comradeship, not a drop of romance/sex in sight.
One of the things I love about Project Hail Mary's (book) ending is that Ryland Grace still has health problems and is disabled, but that is part of his happily ever after, and part of the joyous victory of being able to live. None of this "I'd rather be dead than be disabled" thing we're constantly getting shoved at us. An entire planet rallies to accommodate his disabilities and make him more comfortable, rather than them just being ~cured by magical alien technology~ or something.
And hey, not being able to speak the Eridian language without assistance is, within Eridian society, a disability, so things like the instrument he uses to communicate with his students count as disability aids. But it doesn't stop there! Having that *and* the more mundane disability/chronic illness we deal with day to day--and him getting the resources and support he needs in dealing with them--makes it more impactful.
