On any other day, Kirkwall would have been fraught with tension. While the Qunari no longer waged a war on the city, the increasing tensions with the templars and mages put everyone on edge. Today should have been no different.
But there was a charge to the crisp air, Hawke noticed as he stepped from his mansion into the courtyard at the foot of the Viscount’s Keep. Red banners, freshly laundered, hung from the stone buildings. Paper lanterns of all shapes, sizes and colors decorated the trellises and walkways, and music lilted up from the merchant’s square.
Today was New Year’s Eve, and while there was much to fret over, it was also a day of celebration, a time to remember the year that was and look forward to the year that would be.
With Danarius no longer haunting Fenris’s steps, Hawke was thankful it had been peaceful enough that they had been able to rekindle the spark between them. In the few short months since Fenris had told Hawke how he felt, they had taken it slow, unlike before, and had learned much about each other.
One thing Hawke had learned about Fenris, was that he had never attended a New Year’s Eve celebration. Always in hiding or in service, Fenris didn’t know about the delicious treats, the plentiful drinks and the spectacular light show as the Chantry bell rang out for midnight. And for that, Hawke was extra excited for today.

Fenris learns that he doesn’t have to watch his own back all the time. There’s others who will take a hit for him.

this is for day 29: Trust (obvs)
As a bodyguard, Fenris was intimately familiar with the concept of putting somebody else’s life before his own. It had been his job, his mission, that he should die before harm came to his Master. However, he had been good at his job. His enemies often fell before they could seriously injure him, a fact that left him brimming with pride, only heightened by the approval from his Master.
Old habits died hard. Even though he was far from Danarius’s clutches, he could feel himself slipping into the old ways. He strode behind Hawke with a menacing glare to anyone who might dare expose their blade towards them, shoulders squared, and fingers twitching for his sword. Every stop left him on guard, slouched now, always looking over his shoulder, he was prepared for anything. No harm would come Hawke’s way, if he could help it.
But this was Hawke. Handsome, witty, wonderful Hawke. He had no desire to see harm come to him regardless of the circumstances. A strange fact, considering he was a mage. However, he was a mage who had shown him nothing but respect and control. The innate urge to protect him came from something deeper, something more, rather than just old habits. He wanted to believe that more than anything.

Fenris reflects on the friendships he’d formed in Kirkwall.
One thing Fenris never expected when he came to Kirkwall was that he would find himself among people he would grow to consider friends. As a slave, as Danarius’s personal pet, he found no comradery. He was little more than a pawn to Danarius, though he might’ve considered him a friend once, and the other slaves met his eyes with nothing but scorn. Friendship was foreign to him, but not unwelcome.
Isabela was the first to truly make an effort to befriend him. Her crude humour and teasing had him in stitches more than he ever thought someone could bestow. She enchanted everyone she met, and Fenris most certainly considered himself charmed. At first her careless swinging of her arm around his shoulders was unwelcome, but it grew on him like moss. Even through all of the laughter and jokes, there was something deeper. A glint in her eyes, an understanding without words. Isabela would never press him, and in turn he would never press her.
Varric was equally delightful in humour and tone. He was a strange man, a dwarf unlike any other. Far too busy to engage him like some of the other companions that Hawke brought along, but kind to him all the same. Without him, he would never be able to delight in the look on Anders’ face when he stole his last bit of coin in a hearty game of Wicked Grace.
