Bringing back this, because I'm usually not a fan of the way medias explain what was so appealing about the Buffy/Spike love story, and I think that the way Rainbow Rowell (an author) put it into words in this article back in march 2017 really captured a part of the reason people related to that relationship so much.

Buffy and Spike knew and understood each other on a deep level, and that's what made their love for each other even more real to the audience. It wasn't about being perfect, it was all about seeing beyond appearances (in the good and in the bad) and falling in love nevertheless, while still believing in each other —which is what mature love is all about.

Spike may be a vampire, but Buffy is a Slayer and she needed someone capable of understanding that part of her identity, to fight along with her and support her unconditionally.

That's what I wish for Buffy. For her to be loved and understood the way she deserves, by someone who will always have her back, no matter what.

He sees her like we see her. So much of the show is her putting on a brave face for the people around her, but we as viewers see the private moments where she is fragile. We know her better than the people around her, because we see her when she's alone.

But Spike--because he studies her, because he's insightful, because he is like her, because he loves her--sees past what she projects. He sees her with perfect clarity, and she can be alone when he's there. He is the only one who can love Buffy the way we do.

one of my favorites hc of mine is the idea that spike is overly protective of buffy when it comes to sickness

he knows perfectly well that she is capable of standing up for herself in any situation and with anyone, but oh boy, don't even mention the idea of her having a cold, because he becomes insufferable

he has alarms set for every pill or medication she needs to take, and he knows home remedies and little tricks that help her feel better

he cooks countless different soups and stays vigilant, acting as if buffy’s life were at stake, even though it’s just a simple case of the flu

he simply loves being her personal nurse, loves being able to care for her and being needed in that situation, because it makes him feel useful to her, and the idea of treating her sweetly and pampering her makes him so happy

he uses cute and sometimes incredibly sappy nicknames, especially when he’s helping her eat, she’s his "precious big-eyed baby who’s insufferable and whiny all the time but still lets herself be taken care of" he even speaks to her in a special, ridiculous voice that makes buffy roll her eyes

Does anyone else find it really weird that what makes Angel happiest is having sex with Buffy? Not being around her, or seeing her happy, or keeping her safe— what makes Angel happiest is having sex with her. Makes you think of that moment in season 7 where Spike holds Buffy through the night after she got kicked out of her house, and how he said it was the BEST night of his life. But sure, Angel was her soulmate 🥱
