I enjoy the tactics and the situational drama surrounding Counterspell but have been following some discussions about its pros and cons. The intent of this was to avoid some of the resource hoarding, keep reactions an important liminiting factor, allow some other casters the chance to avoid the counterspell, give more powerful casters another way to say F you, and maintain some of the things that make counterspelling fun. I also thought it opened up some fun ideas for additional caster feats. ​ ​Again this is all a very hast idea that I just formalized today so I’m fully expecting a bunch of unforeseen consequences. It was really fun to do another collaboration with them and I hope you enjoy it. ​ ​This time I let them pick the spell and then I tried to create something that tied into its theme and lore. ​ ​⚔️ The Dyad items were the result. Playing off the idea of twins, or any other powerful connection between two people, these items awaken only when attuned to by two separate individuals. ​ ​I apologize in advance for the verbose feature text but I had so much I wanted to include. The features were a little complicated, I wanted to create lots of options but also avoid some loopholes and abuse. Writing mechanics that so this simply and elegantly is an art I haven’t mastered. The Blade of the Three Kings is inspired by the The Diphos, a battle-ready weapon designed and forged by Zombie Tools - Missoula, Montana, USA. If you purchase a real blade please tell them Feralborn Trading sent ya :) ​ ​This sentient weapon has the ability to project images of translucent force that resemble the battle attire the kings wore in life. This features is a mechanical mashup of the spells mirror image and spirit guardians - but the kings can be separated to protect more than one individual. ​ ​I added on some little floating bits for no other reason than I thought it looked cool on the last sword @loottavern did 🤣 … but I now imagine these floating at the center of the kings translucent forms when they are out and about. ​ ​I have a shield in the works based partially on the mechanics of Bigsby’s Hand, this shield may become The Shield of the Three Kings. 𝐍𝐄𝐖 𝐈𝐓𝐄𝐌 𝐈𝐍𝐒𝐏𝐈𝐑𝐄𝐃 𝐁𝐘 🎥 ​Anyone else watching #foundation on @appletv ? The design and visual effects are amazing! I watched the recent episode last night and decided to make the sensory deprivation shroud for use in my setting. I imagine these being used by mage hunters or in some type of high security prison. There are lots of other cool story elements and themes to “borrow” that also work in a fantasy setting. One that I was already using is that gods can be killed by simply not believing in them. This makes the battle for faith more interesting to me and gives a way for mortals to ascend. ​ ​I was a little worried about the item being overpowered so I attempted to make it hard but not impossible to remove. 🔮 𝐍𝐄𝐖 𝐈𝐓𝐄𝐌 - 𝐓𝐄𝐋𝐄𝐊𝐈𝐍𝐄𝐓𝐈𝐂 𝐋𝐄𝐀𝐒𝐇 ​ ​Simple item inspired by taking the dogs on a morning walk. My hope is that there are some “unintended” fun and creative uses for it. ​ ​Telekinetic Leash ​Wondrous item, uncommon ​ ​This item consists of a collar and a handle. An Invisible leash connects the collar and handle. You can allow the leash to extend up to 30ft no action required. As a bonus action you can press the handle’s gem to retract the leash, pulling the collar up to 30ft towards the handle. ​ ​The leash will magically change size to fit a tiny to large creature and can hold up to 1000 pounds of weight. More weight causes the leash to deactivate. You can use your action to reactivate the leash as long as the collar and handle are within 30 ft of each other. ​ ​The collar can be placed on an object, or a willing or incapacitated creature. A creature with an Intelligence of 4 or greater, who also has the ability to manipulate the collar's clasp, can use its action to remove the collar. ​ ​* If the collared creature is unwilling; ​You can still use a bonus action to retract the leash. However, to do so, you must succeed on a Strength (Athletics) contested by the creature's Strength (Athletics) check. If you succeed the leash retracts, pulling the creature towards you. If you fail you are pulled towards the creature unless you release the handle (no action required). ​ ​* You can drag the creature on your turn. To do so, you must succeed on a Strength (Athletics) contested by the creature's Strength (Athletics) check. If you succeed you can drag the creature behind you but your speed is halved, unless the creature is two or more sizes smaller than you. They have more fun and creative spells on their page - I hope we can collaborate again soon! Note: Decided to make these “knuckles” an item as opposed to a weapon in order to make them enhance unarmed strikes. ​ ​⚔️ Forge Anvil Knuckleduster ​Wondrous Item, Rare (requires attunement) ​ ​Unarmed strikes made with the knuckleduster deal an additional 1d4 bludgeoning damage and count as magical for the purpose of overcoming resistance and immunity to nonmagical attacks and damage. ​ ​Forge. As an action you can speak the command word to cause the knuckleduster to slowly enlarge to the size and weight of a large blacksmithing anvil (roughly 500-600 pounds). Once enlarged, you can use the anvil to magically heat metal without a forge. The Anvil remains enlarged until you use an action to transform it back into the knuckleduster. ​ ​Anvil. When you roll a 20 on an attack roll made with the knuckleduster, the attack does maximum damage and the target must succeed on a Constitution saving throw (DC = 12 + your proficiency bonus). On a failure, the creature’s movement speed becomes 0 until the end of your next turn. ​ ​Ironclad. As an action you can cast the spell Ironclad. 🔮 𝐍𝐄𝐖 𝐈𝐓𝐄𝐌 - 𝐒𝐂𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐂𝐀𝐋𝐓𝐑𝐎𝐏𝐒 ​Screaming Caltrops (bag of 20) ​Wondrous item, common ​ ​As an action, you can spread a bag of caltrops to cover a square area that is 5 feet on a side. When you spread the caltrops you choose whether their scream is mental or audible. ​ ​Any creature that enters the area must succeed on a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw or stop moving this turn, take 1 piercing damage, and cause the caltrops to scream. Taking this damage also reduces the creature's walking speed by 10 feet until the creature regains at least 1 hit point. A creature that perceives the caltrops can move through the area at half speed to avoid making the save. ​ ​A mental scream alerts you in your mind if you are within 1 mile of the caltrops. This scream awakens you if you are sleeping. ​ ​An audible scream produces the sound of 20 screaming humanoids for 10 seconds. ​ ​📜 Thank you to everyone that responded my simple poll. 🤝 𝐍𝐄𝐖 𝐂𝐎𝐋𝐋𝐀𝐁𝐎𝐑𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 with @wizthrift !! ​ ​I had a really good time discussing magic item creation with @wizthrift on the Legend Lore segment (link in stories and in their bio). ​ ​WizThrift presented a unique challenge that I had never done before. ​ ​👉 Close your eyes and randomly point in a direction. Now choose closest object to where you are pointing. The challenge is to quickly come up with that items magical features. The items presented here were what we came up with ( I cheated a little bit just because I know where most of the items are in my office 😂 ). The object I pointed at was a small Super Mario candy box and Wizthrift pointed at an old Barbie Doll. It was a really fun to get the creative juices flowing and stimulate theory craft. ​ ​⚠️ Beware of the dolls ability to allow a spell caster to pretty much circumvent the restriction which allows them to only concentrate on one spell. ​ ​All critiques and comments are encouraged, welcome, and considered. 📜 𝐍𝐄𝐖 𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐒𝐄 𝐑𝐔𝐋𝐄 - 𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐔𝐌𝐁𝐑𝐀𝐍𝐂𝐄 (𝐑𝐎𝐔𝐆𝐇 𝐏𝐋𝐀𝐘𝐓𝐄𝐒𝐓 𝐕𝟏) ​ ​No more strength as a dump stat 😂 Although encumbrance is often ignored I am convinced that some version of it is the best way to balance the over reliance on Dexterity in 5e. This variant rule is intended to be a simple way to illustrate how adventuring equipment and weapons would hinder a character's ability to optimally perform physical activities. This rule also attempts to balance the Strength and Dexterity ability scores by imposing some consequences on weaker characters. This is not an attempt to simulate reality because their are a lot of things wonky with trying to compare ability scores to real life - for example I’m pretty certain Hafthor Björnsson can’t out climb Alex Honnold or out jump a university track and field athlete … but I digress … ​ ​As a player (playing Declan Feralborn) I would often role play dumping my pack and heavy furs before a fight. I liked the imagery and also know how hard it is to be quick and agile while carrying a heavy ruck on your back in real life. ​ ​⚠️⚠️ This is a very rough draft and far from perfect. I started tinkering with it late last night after seeing some tweets by other creators lamenting encumbrance. I decided to share it unpolished and half thought out in the hope that it would encourage theory craft discussions and friendly debate. 🔮𝐍𝐄𝐖 𝐈𝐓𝐄𝐌 ​ ​Not Halloween themed but I got a spark of inspiration last night and was finally able to draw something again. Halloween collaboration item coming soon :) ​ ​⚔️ Spellclash Vambrace ​Wondrous Item, very rare (requires attunement) ​ ​Once attuned you have advantage on saving throws against spells. ​ ​If you are forced to make a saving throw against a spell and succeed, you can use your reaction to record the spell's arcane signature. You can only have one spell signature recorded at a time. ​ ​While a spell is recorded you automatically succeed on subsequent saving throws against this spell but no longer have advantage on saving throws against other spells. ​ ​As an action on your turn you can mentally command the vambrace to use the recorded spell’s arcane signature to cast the spell. The spell is cast at its base level, your spell attack modifier is your proficiency bonus x2, and your spell DC is 8 + your proficiency bonus x2. Once the spell is cast its arcane signature is no longer stored in the vambrace. ​ ​Once you cast a recorded spell, you can’t record another spell's arcane signature until the following dawn. ​ ​All critiques and comments are encouraged, welcome, and considered. 📜 NEW HOUSE RULE!!- FALLING ​ ​Thank you all for bearing with me as I share some of the ideas I have for house rules. I promise to return to sharing magic items soon. I really appreciate the feedback and critique. I also really enjoy the theory craft discussions and hearing of your house rules. I attend to compiling all of these into a few page house rule compendium at some point. ​ ​There are various homebrew rules floating around for falling. I have played with scaling the dice size as the height increases and some of the other common fixes but wanted something a little different. For this rule I wanted monks to be still be able to do a super hero landings, avoid the barbarian shrugging off a 2000 ft fall, and to account for those miraculous stories we hear about in real life where normal people fall from hundreds of feet and still somehow survive. This is not something that will come up too often but hopefully it will add a little bit of fear back into cliff edge encounters. As a side note, I almost always allow players to use reactions to attempt to grab ledges or falling party members. Losing a character to a big fall sucks 😂 ​ ​⚠️ This house rule assumes the use of the Dropping to 0 Hit Points house rule that I shared earlier. If you don’t use this rule you can substitute the System Shock table found in the Dungeon Masters Workshop section of the DMG. ​ ​⚠️ This Is Playtest Material. ​The homebrew material is presented for playtesting. 📜 NEW SUBCLASSES ​Two new subclasses for the Pantomath Bard reskin. I’m still on the fence regarding the names of these colleges. I was trying to keep the names consistent with the other “ologies”. The College of Chirugeonolgy is a field surgeon/combat medic specializing in the use of traditional and magical healing to quickly stabilize wounded allies. This subclass relies heavily on the Dropping to 0 Hit Points house rules that I use. The College of Criminology is still a WIP and is similar in some aspects to the Rogue Inquisitive. This subclass uses magic to aid in investigation similar to a Harry Dresden type detective. One of its features is stolen from the Echosight item I shared a bit ago. ​ ​⚠️ This Is Playtest Material. ​The homebrew material is presented for playtesting. The game mechanics are in draft form, usable in your campaign but not refined by feedback and editing. All critiques and comments are encouraged, welcomed, and considered. I know the art on these is not very exciting. I don’t like to share personal stuff or sadness, but this is more of a sentimental set. They are meant to just be a standard pair of worn out cowboy boots and and old hat that were worn by my dad. All the features are reminiscent of the type of man he was. We lost our father due to cancer about 6 months ago and I’m just getting around to sharing these. I share this not for sympathy but because my brother and I have a practice of including minor NPCs inspired by lost friends and family members in our homebrew world. For example, one is a nod to our grandma - an old half elf woman that runs a small, but famous, bakery called Omi’s at an out of the way river outpost. Our other grandma is a cranky but lovable proprietor of popular inn and greasy spoon tavern called the Copper Kettle. ​ ​We also include other people’s requests/suggestions, even from some people that we have never met. ​ ​For us it’s healing and a nice way to memorialize those we have lost. It’s also fun to be able to visit these places and share tidbits of that persons personality, and our memories, of them with our friends. ​ ​All critiques and comments are encouraged, welcome, and considered.
