Artist Statement: Closing
This semester was by far the most challenging one yet! Well, I guess it ties up with painting class (acrylic friend of mine). In this figure drawing class, we used willow/charcoal pencil, graphite, ink and acrylic paint. My favorite medium was definitely graphite! I like working very clean, smooth and I couldn’t achieve that with charcoal (so messy!). Charcoal tends to be more ashy, you know like ashes color, and that I do not like. Working with graphite is so much more relaxing and gives a photo-realistic detail and style that’s a lot more enjoyable to look at (my perspective).
Most difficult assignment was working in class, sitting in the most uncomfortable seats, and have to draw models. I felt under pressure; a lot of pressure actually. I was always overwhelmed in the classroom. I find myself making better art on my own, alone, in my room with relaxing classical music. But I dealt with it because I had no choice or I would’ve failed the class. Ah, and the mixed media assignment was always a challenge; always!
For my midterm, I spent a good week and a half or more working on a full body length self portrait. I think this was my MOST enjoyable assignment in this class. It was my most favorite! I love realism and working with graphite. Getting the proportion accurate was.... whew! Difficult, if I must say. I tend to complete more graphite drawings than paintings. I think I finished it the night before it was due. I was happy with the result. This was my FIRST self portrait & I am so thankful and glad the professor assigned me the full length portrait. Thank you!
The semester has ended. I am relieved the class is over BUT I am so sad to go. I met amazing, I mean AMAZING people in this class. I enjoy helping others because it’s a natural instinct to be supportive of my peers and help them with whatever they asked. Professor Fresquet, you’re one of the best mentors I have ever met! Thank you for your support and for your honest critique <3
