“Good morning, pal,” drawing out each of her very peppy greetings vowels out a little more than she should have, Rhea sidestepped between her fellow student and the path across the quad that was laid out before them, determined sort of smile in place. Her table, stacked with fliers, key chains and calendars galore, sat to her left, and in her arms she cradled a yellow bucket emblazoned with the Paws Animal Rescue logo that was– tragically– empty. Twenty minutes of sitting where instructed and trying to flag down people on their way to class hadn’t gotten her any donations… so naturally, she’d resorted to what she did best: annoying the innocent. “Would you like to spare a moment to talk about your local animal rescue, and what you can do to help?” She paused, considered, and then decided to go for gold in one fell swoop, “Or maybe, spare some change and leave here a cherished donor?”

Ferris had been running all morning. Four miles - his longest distance in one sitting ever. If he was capable of feeling proud himself, he would’ve gave himself a pat on the back for that accomplishment. He was able to run the whole time, and his lungs only a little bit felt they were going to burst. He was still sore from yesterdays three and half mile sprint, but missing days only added to his anxieties. Now he was slowly walking, almost limping, making his way back to his room for a much needed shower. When Rhea spoke up, he was startled, being awoken from his tunnel vision state. “Of course. Except I don’t think I can adopt...Well maybe I could. I’d just have to talk to my mom first.” Ferris had enough pets back home and Prudence here at the school. But he could never say no to a dog’s puppy eyes. He took a ten dollar bill out of his pocket, happy it wasn’t drenched in sweat and placed it in the bucket.

“Can I help you?” Kennedy was slightly surprised at the person who’d walked into the door of the empty classroom she’d taken up residence in. She had turned on the projector and decided that it was a good time to catch up on shows. Kennedy had her feet kicked up on the desk and was chowing down on a giant container of cheese balls. “I know for a fact there are no classes in here for the rest of the day, so you can’t possibly be here for that.”

Ferris knew he spent too much time studying. He knew he get a perfect grade with half the effort he put in. But if he couldn’t be good at socializing or being popular, he knew his education could always be a place he could succeed on. Choosing and empty classroom to study in rather than the crowded library he thought would be a smart idea. Up until he saw it wasn’t in fact empty. “Well no - not class...Studying...But I can leave. I don’t mean to bother you and - whatever it is you are watching.”

Carmen could tell the sudden change of mood and minset on the boy, it was alsmot laughable, and lame if she was being honest. “Look, boy, you don’t have to lie to me. Anyone with two brain cells can tell you’re trying to make up with what you’re trying to say, who are you trying to impress? Me? You? Your… dog?”

“I’m not making it up - I mean - I’m not like drowning in friends...but I do have actual friends...I’m just - I don’t know - I don’t think I have plans for halloween with them is all. I don’t know...” Ferris wasn’t sure what he was trying to prove. Carmen was so intimidating to him. She reminded him of the girls back at his old school.

Griffin listened to the blue haired boy explain things as if they were nothing, though it was actually a bit… outstanding. He had only had one dog when he was little, brought in by his father to entertain him and his older sister when they were younger, but it had been so many years ago. “Those sound like… a lot. How do you take care of them?” He asked before the other spoke up again. “Maybe. Maybe she can be blue and you… hairy.”

“Well I love my pets like they are family. That’s how I was raised at least. So it’s not really too hard to take care of something you love, right ?? I don’t know - My mom and I are just huge animals lovers and we both can’t say no to pets in need.” He knew it sounded somewhat bizarre in the span of things, but Ferris wouldn’t have it any other way. “Right...Yeah. That could work.”

perhaps brie was simply naive and completely clueless to how cruel the world could be. she loved blindly. she didn’t have a mean bone in her body and the worst thing to happen to her wasn’t by the hand or by mouth of another, it simply happened. maybe she was just lucky that her bubbly demeanor correlated with her being well liked. but she truly couldn’t wrap her head around someone not liking ferris foxworth. he was her greatest friend– she’d sing his praises until her face turned as blue as his hair, honestly. at times, she’d go so far to curse the fates for not bringing him into her life sooner. any blemish on his face, his lankiness, any flaw he probably found in himself was lost on the blonde. a laugh escaped her lips, her small hands balling into fists. “oui, that’s me !! a real slugger if you have ever seen one !! a real tough cookie.” she knew she was a far cry from tough, but, boy, did she love to imagine a version of herself with a stronger backbone. her smile was warm and cheeky to say the least, though the weight of his statement didn’t hit her all too hard. “well, good. ‘cause i think the world of you.” not a lie. she did– though in that moment it was in the most platonic way. “that is a notion i could get behind. we are two peas in a pod, are we not ??” her brows raised thoughtfully as she spoke. “that is fair. google was invented for a reason !! i am sure there’s a buzzfeed article about all those things that slip through the cracks… hey– listen,” she paused, looking at the watch on her wrist. “you said you’re not doing anything right now, right?? the library is closing soon and i’ve got to get this book for my class. want to come ??” 

Any and every insult one could think of while looking at Ferris - the boy had heard it all before. Years and years of being tortured by the bullies of his old school made Ferris the man (boy) he was today. It didn’t matter than Brie showered him nothing but positive thoughts and compliments. It didn’t occur to him that she liked him for who he was. Looks and all. No matter all the praise, he never could get himself to like what he saw in the mirror. Maybe if Ferris came to WDA sooner - met Brie sooner - everything would’ve been different. Maybe he wouldn’t of let the bullies get to him. Maybe he could of learn to like himself for his quirks instead of hate them. Maybe he wouldn’t have to force himself to starve just to feel a little better about himself. “I know I wouldn’t want to get in the ring with you.” Honestly, the blonde could probably beat Ferris in a fight if given the chance. The words almost stung. Brie was practically the boy’s everything... He adored her with every fiber of his being. But their relationship has and probably always will be a friendship. He had crushes in the past. But the girl Ferris liked back in Westmore didn’t even knew he existed. It was much easier than seeing the girl you were almost positive you loved every day. Knowing fair well she’d never feel the same way. Anyway - he would rather be Brie’s friend for life than risk taking their relationship further and ending it forever. He nodded and smiled at her. “Sure. Yeah, let’s get out of here !!” It didn’t matter the task. Ferris just liked being around Brie.

    — * |  “oh no.” her gasp of undiluted HORROR was audible even over the loud ruffle of thick newfoundland fur. wet mud that had been practically imbedded in its mass shook free and spattered walls and owner, and though she had made a mad rush to stop her dog it resulted only in her getting covered - head to toe - in dirt. finally she stopped, and after the shock of the events passed jane lifted her hands to her face to wipe mud from her eyes far too apprehensive to look towards the nearest ( possible ) victim when she asked; “did that hit you?? i’m so sorry.”

Ferris couldn’t stop the golden retriever from running to the other dog. No matter how hard he tried to pull Prudence back, she was just to powerful for the boy - who was practically just skin and bones. The dog and him were now both splattered with mud. And Ferris just sighed, ignoring the fact that Pru had just been groomed only a week ago and now she already dirty again. Raising the dog was not as easy without his mom around. “Don’t worry at all. Animals just can’t stay clean for even a hour - believe me - I know.” He added with a slight chuckle. “Back home I have four dogs.”

All the animals. “How many did you have growing up?” He asked, slightly curious by the choice of words. “Right. What ideas do you have for your costume?” 

“Oh we usually maintained an average of four or five dogs, two cats, and plenty of fish. Right now, I also have a salamander at home and I’m pretty sure my mom was eyeing up the guinea pigs at the local pet store - last time we spoke. But my dad usually stops her.” This occurrence happened way too often to ignore. “Some people said I should her and she should be me - weird, right??”

“Yeah. She’s pretty adorable...At least that’s what she tells me.” He joked with the girl. “You can totally pet her, if you’d like. She’d totally enjoy all the attention.” Ferris knew if the roles were reversed, he would of loved to pet whatever dog Lila had. “Yeah. My mom is a little insane about her pets. But I kind of am too. Our walls are covered in pictures of all the pets we’ve had.”
