afaik portent works by replacing a d20's roll directly, and a nat 20 doesn't always guarantee success. brennan did say the dc was 30. so even with bardic inspiration and guidance, the roll was going to end up being 24 because taliesin rolled ones on the d6 and the d4. soooooo..... idk. it shouldn't have succeeded?

BUT maybe i'm wrong and it does guarantee success. regardless, i do think the auspicious day thing is really fun. i mean even if not mechanically, narratively it makes sense that a divination wizard uses her luck for the day to guarantee success on one thing. so okayyyyyy. okayyyy i do enjoy it
