Broke: our products are vegan friendly! Buy now!!
Woke: veganism is a valid lifestyle choice and can be rooted in a place of culture, self-expression, and personal health. However, promoting "vegan-friendly" as a boutique selling point falsely equates it with being a healthy, morally superior trait. Veganism is not healthy for everyone and it does not ensure less suffering in the food industry. Specifically, it ignores the exploitation of low-paid, mainly immigrant farm laborers. Additionally, vegan circles spread disinformation about animal agriculture that can actually hurt farmers and livestock. Animal ag is not necessarily bad or good- it depends on the practices specific to producing that food item. Vegan lifestyles are the same. We need to be more conscious about the practices we support for food production, because an approach does not necessarily do more to alleviate human and animal suffering if it is not rooted in science and reality.
