The breeze blowing the trees ever so slightly as you watched the birds fly away through the window, humming slightly hearing the door to the room open. looking over your shoulder to see the group of misfits standing before you minus Sirius of course, seeing how lily stood there in her pale blue dress you had picked out for her along with the flowers to match her hair and compliment her skin tone. James holding her waist ever so slightly he smiles seeing you there all dressed up looking nervous, your hands fiddling with one another indicating the stress you were feeling. It wasn't a huge wedding it was small and private with only family and close friends.

But somehow you managed to work yourself up to the point you needed a shot of tequila, lily floating over smiled and fixed your done up hair. The curls falling down gently as she brushed her fingers through your hair fixing a few clips that had come loose, whispering to you to settle. "It's only Sirius, I can tell by your eyes honey you aren't getting cold feet you're just nervous" Her words did bring some sort of comfort to you but you needed to see or even just talk to the groom, husband to be.

"I need to see him...or talk to him please lily"

Seeing how Remus slipped out of the room to check on the groom he found him in the exact same situation, pacing around the room he was given. His tie not done up properly, trousers not even done up, hair tied back into a loose ponytail it was clear he was even more stressed. Remus shut the door behind him getting the attention of the pacing man, sweat marks on his white shirt as he muttered "what..what do you want Remus? can't you see I'm busy?"

"busy panicking dude, settle down and have some water. someone needs to talk to you before the ceremony. you can't see them though can't ruin the surprise of a first look."

Leading the worried groom towards a door the group had you on one side of it and sirius on the other, your hand opening the door oh so slightly just enough to let your hand out and to grab his but not enough to show anything else. gently taking his larger and rougher hand into yours he let out a small relieved sigh. Looking down after feeling something on your hand he noticed a small paper ring, the same paper ring he had made you in your first year at hogwarts. The day he told everyone he would someday marry you. The day you knew you had met the love of your life.

Laughing some as he felt his vision get blurry with tears bringing yoyr hand up to his mouth pressing a soft kiss onto the ring he made all those years ago, letting a few tears escape he mumbled "i thought you threw that away ages ago my dear" The sound of his wobbly voice set the waterfalls on you as well as you took a second to reply, breathing deeply as you mumbled out trying to hide the crying "no never"

moving in

Moving into a new home was stressful enough, but moving into a new city as well? even worse and not to add on the fact you and Remus had moved into a muggle town. After the events that had just happened with the war the two of you decided it was for the best to hide away from all the magic and madness for a while. sure the two of you will still use magic here and there but you both just wanted some down time, not to mention that two of your very close friends just had a baby. god did that make you feel old even if you were only 22 years old, seeing your friends growing up faster with marriage and a baby? you kind of felt left behind.

Feeling someone grab your shoulder you snapped around just to see Remus giving a soft smile, Sirius and James walking past with boxes in their arms laughing with one another cracking jokes about whatever. "you okay?" two simple quick words escaped Remus' mouth as you just nodded and took a breath in "yeah, just thinking don't worry about me" lifting a box to go into the kitchen you couldn't help but smile at lily helping unbox all the small and not too heavy stuff for you, hearing a tiny laugh from beside you was the one and only harry as you saw how comfy he was in the car seat playing with whatever toy they gave him. "oh look at you" cooing to the boy he only gave a gummy smile back.

time flew away eventually waving goodbye to the rest of the group as the night got darker and quieter, looking up to your partner he smiled back down as most of the house was unpacked. "maybe we should eat something small to celebrate whatcha say?" nodding fast you quickly ran towards the front door to put on your shoes as remus followed "hey hey! I've heard over here they have something called takeaway? they deliver the food to the door! lets try it out before we decide to go running out" his grin wide as you slowly let the shoes fall off of your feet.

after about 7 failed attempts to order some takeout food the two of you were stuck eating extremely dry cookies you had bought earlier for the car ride here, mumbling through the crumbs and horrible feeling in your mouth you let a chuckle out "we should've just walked to the shop around the corner hey?" hearing an agreeing hum from the boy the both of you let out some laughter and finished up the cookies, being dry they still tasted pretty good. looking at the time on the small watch it read 12:09AM "maybe a little too late for anything honey, we'll try again tomorrow and actually eat some meal we both can make"

heading towards the shared bedroom you got changed into a pair of Remus' boxers and a oversized t-shirt, feeling some arms wrap around your waist you already knew Remus was very much ready for bed letting his lips kiss over your ear, cheek and neck you smile and let out a small whine. leaning back into the comfort of those familiar arms as the occasional sound of a car driving passed filled the air, small whispers as Remus mumbled "I'm glad we made this move, its quiet and no drama for either of us." as the night got darker the two of you were curled up in the bed cuddled up while some muggle show was playing on the tv. "I don't get it, they chuck half naked muggles on a island when its hot and expect them to fall in love? but that girl likes that boy..but the boy likes a completely different girl? muggle shows are something else"

laughing at how silly the shows are it didn't take either of you long to eventually give up and turn them off for the night, turning over on your side to face the boy you watched him lean up and press a few soft but loving kisses to your forehead. enjoying the affection from him you looked up and let one of those kisses land on your lips, cupping his face you let yourself melt into the kiss. a happy sigh escaping from Remus he hummed breaking away "c'mon we need energy for tomorrow"

time flew past and soon enough it had been a few months since the two of you has settled into the town, the amount of times the both of you had messed up. such as almost blowing up an air fryer, using magic in public to pick your washing up, calling people muggles on the daily, getting on buses and trains without paying properly which ended up with the both of you getting stopped by police rather often or the fact Remus thinks you can park anywhere there's room which got you a lot and I mean a lot of parking tickets, but you wouldn't change it for anything, the group often visited and you even let Sirius stay the night often since he didn't have a partner. along with babysitting young harry you loved when he came over and you could play parents with Remus to prepare you both for a possible little one in the future.

The pouring of the rain hit hard as the whole school seeked out shelter in the comfort and warmth of their common rooms, hearing the thunder roar, the sounds of the younger years gossiping you couldn't help but sigh. The book in your hands keeping you at bay and sane with all the commotion going on, quidditch had been cancelled due to the danger of the wind and rain. it looked like small lakes had been formed with the amount of rain falling down onto the pitch...safe to say the team weren't too happy about it all.

sitting up in the girls dorm it wasn't too busy at this time but it wasn't unusual to see a boy or two being snuck up into the rooms, nothing ever happened or so you hoped. watching the raindrops race down the window you were sat by, looking out onto the field in front of you, you wiped the glass clear or the steam that appeared on it seeing how the group of clowns that you liked to call them were running inside. Remus, Sirius, James and peter. hearing lily laugh at them you turned your head to see her right beside you, jumping slightly you didn't expect her to be right beside you. lily shared a dorm room with you so the two of you became close fast and you wouldn't change it for the world.

seeing how wet and cold it was outside you stood up to grab a towel and blankets saying to lily as well how the boys were soaking, she was faster than lightening as she seemed to even be out the door before you. chuckling as you followed it wasn't long until you came face to face with the shivering boys, handing them all towels and blankets as you walk over to Remus smiling "are you insane?...its freezing out there you'll get a cold" The boy just shrugged and took the blanket giving you a shy smile as he did, using it to wipe his face and start to dry his hair as you laughed at how much water was seeping out onto the towel.

Remus couldn't help but look over to his friends seeing how Sirius was already away ready to dry up along with peter leaving James and lily together and you and him, lily and James weren't in a established relationship yet but they really were everyone saw how the two looked at one another. Remus always jokingly said the boys would need to fight for best man at their wedding since no doubt you'd be the maid of honour, watching how the two flirted made Remus envious of how care free James seemed to be around her. no nerves no awkward hand fiddling.

thanking you again he nodded his head and went to walk off not seeing the disappointed look you had on, keeping his head low he walked up into the room to see Sirius shaking his head at him "tsk tsk tsk Remus" the boy seemed confused and suspicious as he spoke up "what? what did I do?" feeling worried he actually forgot something he placed the damp towel on his bed and sat beside it trying to style his wet hair as Sirius spoke once again "its more of what you didn't do...we see the way you look at her and how awkward you get. You're too afraid to tell her what you want my boy!"

It was true, Remus had been pinning after you for a while now and just didn't know how to admit that to you or to even bring up the topic of a date. "It's been what? six months now since you told us?" Sirius only wanted the best for the boy as did peter and James, walking over he sat down near him when James finally re-joined the group "its been a long six months.." he commented getting a wet towel to his face. as the group laughed Remus seemed to be in his own world, Sirius noticing this he mumbled "right c'mon I'll tell you how you get the girl...who else knows better than me?" leaning over to whisper into his friends ear Remus could only nod and grab a notebook writing down points he was told, first mistake he made was listening to Sirius.

not checking the calendar as he rushed downstairs after hearing advice from the worst person he could take it from he saw lily standing next to the fireplace doing what seemed like drying off towels and blankets, he grabbed her arm slightly "where is she? I need to speak to her about something" filled with bad advice and some random confidence lily looked suspicious and made him sit down on the couch, talking to him mentioning she'd go up into the girls dorm and fetch you to come down. doing just that she rushed into the room slamming the door shut yelling at you to get up "quick! quick now! Remus just told me he had something to ask you like right this second!" The book in your hands being ripped away and thrown as you let out a grumble and a half, not letting yourself get too excited you made your way down towards the common room and looked over to see him still sat where lily made him stay.

"Remus?"

his head snapping around to see you had changed your clothes due to when the clowns came in drenched and covered in mud it got all over your comfies, fixing the sweater you had on around the neck you mumbled "you had something to say? if its about getting my clothes messy I don't care, I didn't mind helping you" Remus could only shake his head and stand up, making his way around the couch he got a little closer. "no no that's not what I was going to ask, it was more me wanting to ask if you'd like to come with me into Hogsmeade? like we'll grab coffee or a butterbeer I don't know" his head down slightly as you seemed to be just as confused or suspicious, slowly nodding your head "yeah..I'd like that"

summary. you and sirius became friends that were soon best friends, everyone saw the love between you two— they truly saw how in love the two of you were, except you didn’t.

notes. this is a muggle au! very much a lottt of fluff:))

sirius black was truly your best friend, he was your other half. he fit you so well, as you fit him. it was an instant click between the two of you, you guys shared so many of the same interests and so much more.

over the past years, he has gotten very comfortable with you, more than he was with his other friends— which have accepted you with open arms. they loved you, you had such an angelic personality to them. somehow always having a smile on your face, making them laugh until their stomachs hurt.

which was happening right now, you had busted your ass walking into the living room where an annual hangout session was happening with the group. you stuck your middle finger up as sirius helped you up, they were used to it— you falling, you were very clumsy.

finding your way in between sirius legs as he sat on the couch, you on the floor as everyone’s laugh died down.

sirius hand’s quickly fell into your hair as a conversation started to flow, soon enough he was braiding a piece of your hair. remus who was sitting beside him, caught on very quickly. he lightly chuckled catching the other’s attention.

“what?” james questioned, remus jerked his head to sirius, you couldn’t see what he was pointing at but sirius did who was now tying a hair tie at the end of the braid. he always has at least two on his wrist, one for him in case his hair annoys him and one for you.

you were very confused when james told you to turn around but nonetheless, you did. he let out an ‘aww’ making sirius reply with a “fuck you.”

“woah, sirius.” you looked up at him, you knew what the fuss was about, you knew the feeling of sirius braiding your hair.

“yeah. woah, sirius. it’s cute is all i’m saying.” james said at sirius’ mean glare. you laughed at the two leaning back between sirius’ legs.

the rest of the night, sirius hands were on your shoulders as your hands caressed his skin.

the next week, the group couldn’t hang out at james’s house because he had the flu so you were lying in your bed— bored as hell. wondering if you could call sirius to come over but figured this was a rare friday night where he could go out.

groaning as you stood up deciding to make brownies, walking through the small hallway of your apartment, into the kitchen you began to grab everything you needed.

after setting everything on the counter, before you could open the box you heard knocking and then the door trying to be opened. “love!” you heard sirius muffled voice.

“let me in!” he continued to yell your name as you walked towards your front door, “hold on!” you yelled back, finally opening the door you saw sirius holding flowers with a bright smile, his hair was wet and a small cut was on his face.

“sirius, bloody hell. what happened to you?” you grabbed his free arm and dragged him into the house, pulling him into your home and into the kitchen.

he smiled leaning against the counter as you started digging through all of your cabinets, grabbing things. you stood in front of him with a worried look as he held out the flowers out for you.

you grabbed them and put them on the counter, he gasped, “you need to put them in water.”

“they can wait,” you spoke grabbing both of his arms and turning him as you now leaned against the counter putting yourself on it, pulling him in between your legs. his hands finding them on the outside of your thighs.

you started to work on the cut that laid on his cheekbone, “sirius, what happened? why do you reek of beer?” questioning him as your eyes found his for a split second, he winced as you rubbed his cut.

“just some bar fight, the cracked a bottle over my head.” he answered so simply like it was nothing, you scoffed finishing his cut. setting the napkin by your side, you felt his hand lightly rubbing your thighs.

you pushed him softly so you could jump off the counter, you grabbed the flowers and a vase, filling it with water and placing the flower in it.

“love,” he lightly said as you turned around and leaned against the counter. “what?”

“are you angry with me?” he asked, you laughed at him as you shook your head, “why would i? you just worry me sometimes.” you answered him, he tilted his head but said nothing.

“so… brownies?” you cut the silence and he smiled, “unless you plan to go off to another bar and get into a fight.” he laughed but grabbed your hand to drag you close to him.

“brownies sound better.” he said grabbing the box and opening it.

the two of you began to bake the brownies, as you mixed the batter, sirius dipped his finger into it and dragged it on your nose.

“sirius!” you laughed leaning away from him, he chuckled as you wiped your nose, not getting everything, sirius wiped the rest of it. you froze realizing how close he was to you and him staring into your eyes.

you stared back, your eyes betraying you and flickering to his lips. clearing you throat you went back to mixing the batter as he stood beside you.

later, the two of you were laying on the couch waiting for them to be done. you were talking about your newest painting you had done, he wanted to see it but you weren’t finished.

“so what? i sit and watch you nearly every time you paint, now i can’t see an unfinished one?” he said, you laughed, “yeah.” you spoke, lucky for you, the timer went off and the brownies were done. you stood up and grabbed them out of the oven, setting them on the top to let them cool. sirius was quick to put his hand out.

you slapped it with yours, “idiot, it’s hot!” you said looking up at him, he was leaning his head over your shoulder so he was practically in your face, again. he was smiling at you, and his eyes flickered to your lips. you had to be losing your mind. he smirked, not his usual sweet smile with you, before backing away.

blinking quite a few times as you turned back towards the brownies, “can you, um, hand me a knife?” you asked him, he got it for you so you started to cut the them.

after letting them cool sirius put the sweets on a plate, without saying anything he started to walk through your home. without questioning, you followed him and there he was lying on your bed already clicking on your remote and snacking.

you laughed, making your way to the bed and laying beside him. “delicious brownies we made.” he spoke with his mouth full.

“gross.” you said grabbing your own, “oh! stop, let’s watch this.” you said seeing a movie you’ve been wanting to watch, so sirius stopped and started playing the movie.

after way more brownies the two of you should’ve eaten, sirius was curled into your side as your fingers played with his hair. the movie was nearly finished and you were almost falling asleep.

sirius moved away from you, looking towards him he began to stretch his whole body. his shirt rode up slowly and your eyes trailed above his pants, you squeezed your eyes shut shocked at yourself.

“you okay, love?” sirius said, opening your eyes to see him watching you.

“perfect!” your voice was all high with the one word making him laugh in confusion.

you sat up in the bed as he did, “you sure?” he leaned closer, what the actual fuck. your mind was going everywhere. without thinking, you leaned in too.

sirius leaned in all the way, capturing your lips with his. at first, you were into much of a shock you didn’t kiss back. sirius pulled away as soon as he realized you weren’t kissing him back.

“fuck— i didn- i don’t know—“ he began to trip over his words, you smiled as you watched him freak out, one of your hands grabbed his neck and pulled him in, kissing him— harder than you expected too.

he kissed back immediately, grabbing your face with his hands. the kiss got messier as you two realized— you were kissing your best friend and you liked him. by the looks of it, he liked you too.

his hands traveled down to your waist, grabbing you and putting you on his lap as he leaned against the headboard. his hands found back at on your cheeks as one of yours was in his hair.

the both of you pulled away for air, he leaned his forehead against yours with heavy breathing.

“holy fuck.” you let out with a small laugh, he laughed also.

the two of you stayed there for a few moments before sirius brought up staying the night, saying how remus (who he lived with) was having someone over. you of course said yes as you got off of his lap.

“you know where your extra clothes are.” you said as he stood up and walked towards your dresser where he had his own drawer seeing how he stayed over so much.

you were already in your pajamas so you got under your covers grabbing another brownie from your nightstand as sirius went into the bathroom.

he came back as quickly as he went in, quickly he found his way on your stomach as your hands went onto his head scratching it. you put on a random movie as he wrapped his arm around your waist.

after thirty minutes of the movie playing you both fell asleep.

ever since that night, sirius had stayed the night for a whole week until the next hangout where james sent an address for everyone to meet up.

you were currently getting ready in your bathroom playing music as sirius sat on the closed toilet watching you do your hair singing along to the fleetwood mac song.

after almost an hour, you were done and walking out the door with sirius hand in hand. your car was in the shop and all there was, was sirius’ bike. you had ridden with him countless times. the first time you felt like you were going to pass out from being so scared but after a few minutes, it was fun.

sirius handed you the extra helmet for you, putting it on and getting on the bike, sirius took off.

when arriving, sirius grabbed your hand as quickly as he could and started searching for your friends. the address where james told y’all to go was just a field full of hundreds of people holding something in their hands.

“there’s rem.” you pointed out your friend, now seeing the others. you started to make your way towards them, dragging sirius behind you.

“sirius, there you are.” remus said getting everyone’s attention, “i’ve began to think you ran away.” he said, pointing out how his best friend hadn’t been home in a week.

“sorry, lad. been at her house.” sirius pointed at you with his free hand, you shrugged with a smile.

“whatever, on with it!” james handed the two of you whatever the others were holding. taking it in your hands confused, looking up at sirius with furrowed eyebrows but all he did was shrug.

“alright, follow me!” james yelled as he opened up the thing, everyone watched him with confusion but did what he did. you looked up at him seeing what it finally was behind him, “sirius, look.” you nudged his arm, he looked down at you than following your eyes.

“woah.” he simply said, “i know, right?” you said looking at him.

everyone had followed james’ instructions, “okay, now just have whoever light it.” he said, sirius put his down and lit yours and it began to float up. it was beautiful with everyone’s flying up too.

you then did sirius’, after everyone did theres, they were watching it— except sirius, he was watching you.

“this is beautiful.” you noted, looking at sirius but he was watching you. he smiled down at you.

“i really wanna kiss you, love.” he whispered, not saying anything you kissed him.

“oh my fucking god!” marlene randomly yelled, everyone turned towards her, then turning to see what she was yelling over. everyone gasped or yelled in suprised at the sight of you and sirius kissing.

james and remus began to whistle, you and sirius pulled away and flicked them off with a smile.

“finally.” lily spoke walking towards you, “took you two long enough.” she said as the boys walked towards sirius and the girls to you.

“ha ha!” you faked a laugh, “seriously?” you said looking towards remus who was giving james a twenty.

“what? it was getting hard on figuring out when you two were going to get together so we made a bet.” james shrugged putting the money in his pocket. you and sirius rolled your eyes.

the rest of the night, the group was walking around the city instead of sitting inside. you and sirius were walking in the middle of everyone, his arm was around your shoulders as your arm was around his waist.

james finally found the destination, a park. it was near midnight so no one was there and he quickly ran towards the slides as everyone started to run towards places on the set.

you and sirius went to the swings, lightly rocking. your hand was on the chains as your head leaned against your hand looking at him, he was thinking hard.

“what’s going on?” you broke his thoughts, he turned towards you.

“hmm, just wondering if i should ask you to be my girlfriend right now or not.” he spoke so casually you almost missed what he actually said.

“what?” you snapped your head towards him, he laughed at the shock on your face. “you heard me.” he said.

“and well?” you said with a smirk, “eh, i don’t know.” he shrugged, you knew he was joking because he was trying so hard not to smile.

“well than..” you looked away, then standing up and making your way in front of him.

“sirius black. will you be my boyfriend?” you said trying not to smile too hard, it was not working, you were grinning ear to ear. he chuckled, pretending to think.

“yea, yes i will.” he answered making you lean down and kiss him again. smiling into the kiss as his hands went to your neck.

“oi! we are at a children’s playground!” james yelled causing lily to hit his head, “ow!” he whispered yelled.

“fuck off, we’ll be leaving then.” sirius said standing up and grabbing your hand.

“have fun!” marlene yelled, you looked over your shoulder to seeing her wink. you laughed looking forward again.

“home?” sirius asked, you smiled hearing him call your home his. you nodded untangling your hands and hooking your arm in his.

Remus remembers the day he met you; your pristine, fresh pressed Hogwarts robes, and your swotty attitude, charging down the Express like a tyrant, wielding confidence he sorely lacked. You'd been on the hunt for whoever set off the stink bomb just outside the carriage you were in (it was James, showing off to Sirius, their friendship quickly and surely bonded together with the residual smoke of that foul little rock). Remus remembers you, often, that way. Always ready to take responsibility - or force it onto others, for their actions - and do what you believed to be right.

He knew in that exact moment, with the soundtrack of James and Sirius' hysterical laughter, the smell of pure, unbridled dung lingering in the air, that you were the bravest person he'd ever known, that when the sorting hat was sat atop your head mere hours later, there'd be no pause, no debate, you were Gryffindor through and through.

The only thing Remus hadn't accounted for, was that he, too would be placed in Gryffindor - with his nauseous stomach, shaking hands, and scars that made him feel small, rodent like, a glint of gold in the window that catches the eye long enough to peak interest, but amounts to nothing worthy of attention; rather, disgust.

Remus still sees a lot of that up-tight, bossy attitude in you, now. But more than anything, your bravery prevails. The war has taken a lot from you, from everyone he holds dearest. The first time, it was hard. Bearable, because James and Lily were alive, because Sirius wasn't locked up and losing his mind in Azkaban. There was hope, because they had Harry, and nothing was going to happen to any of them because everyone had to live to see Harry grow up.

Fools. The lot of them had been fools, he realises. This time, it's different, harder. There are no friends, no family left. It's you, and it's Remus. It breaks Remus' old, cobwebbed heart to see everything that has been taken from you both. The innocence, the joy. All that's left of you, these days, is bravery. Bravery that shines so bright, like a leading light, bravery that holds him together on the bad days, bravery that pulls sad, scared Remus out of his cocoon of dread and fear, forces him into the light. You've always been good at that - at love, at protecting the people whom you love.

It's what you do. They hadn't known it at the time - and really, how could they have? - but James and Sirius set off a stink bomb outside the carriage of a young muggle-born girl, terrified of her new school, her future, what this change would do to her. The stink bomb went off and Mary MacDonald had dissolved into hysterical tears. From the moment you came into Remus' life, you've been a protector. Your heart is your leading light, your entire being, a soul so pure it'd make angels weep.

He shouldn't be surprised. Really. The minute it the south wall of the castle blows up, Remus should know the lengths you'll go to. The things you will do to make sure the people you love are safe.

There's dust and rubble everywhere, clouding his vision, choking him until he can't breathe, and in the minute before the wall crumbles around you, your body taking ninety percent of the blast, hands fast in pushing Remus so hard he has no choice but to stumble back, away, in a daze, he sees your eyes. They're calm. So calm it's unnerving. He knows everything that people will say you never got the chance to tell him. He's known since he was sixteen everything you feel for him, the love, the gratitude, the admiration.

You've had a life together. Not all of it has been good - war and death, losses and pain so unimaginable Remus wonders how either of you ever got through it. But the quiet moments, the happy moments, not marred by battle, or grave stones, weeping, or bone crushing sorrow. The moments where all that mattered was both of you, the love, the happiness; the joy Remus felt with you is nothing he ever thought he'd get to experience, would ever deserve.

He knows. He knows you love him, he knows you're okay with the choice you've just made. But he's surprised.

In all the years you've spent together - all the funerals you've attended together, planned together - he always thought that when the time came, you'd both go together. Asleep, old and decrepit. Something peaceful, after the life you'd shared.

But the blood is still thrumming in his veins, the cogs in his brains till whirring as he stares at the pile of rubble that's fallen around you. He thinks, rather foolishly, and only for a second, that you may have survived. He thinks your sheer will and determination could still be pulsing in your heart, the bravery you wear so honestly wrapped around you like a coat of armour. But the bond that ties you to him, the mating bond, the marriage bond - Remus has never known which is which, it's all an overwhelming amount of love, to him - pulls taught. It snaps, like wisps of smoke between you, and Remus breaks with it.

He breaks so fast and so hard that the world crumbles around him and he loses track of where he is, what he's fighting for. It comes out of nowhere, a flash of light, of bright green light and Remus is grateful to be spared of the agony, because it's barely been two minutes and he had already felt like he was dying, anyway. The pain is nothing, in comparison to losing you, to live in a world without your laugh, your smile, your hard-headed attitude. He couldn't have done it, and so he feels peace as he crumples to a heap on the ground.

Maybe a silly part of him thought that you'd be waiting at the other end. In a way, you are. But, also, you're not. Because he's watching you as you charge down the Astronomy Tower stairs, the fourteen-year-old version of himself hot on your heels. He remembers this like it was yesterday. He'd kept his secret from you so well until that year, when the growth spurt started and the wolf got bigger and the scars ran deeper, in more noticeable places. The one that ran across his face.

You'd been horrified, he remembers. The look of unbridled fury as you demanded to know who on earth had done such a thing. You were never horrified of him. No. Just the mere idea that someone had hurt him, and it made Remus feel loved, protected. You made him feel loved and protected.

He watches as you reach the bottom of the steps, twirling to face him with your signature unimpressed scowl. He feels fondness like a ball of sunlight in his chest, mouthing the words 'you're a dirty liar, Remus Lupin!' along with you, the sound of your posh swotty accent ringing in his ears.

He'd went back to his dorm that night and made the decision to tell you, came up with a plan, the easiest way to break it to you. You arrived at his door two hours later, half way through his idea list, and told him you'd figured it out. He knew then that he loved you. For all you were bossy and uptight, he loved you, your impatience, your brain, your heart. Remus was in love.

You fade from his view and Remus steps forwards as though he might be able to grab you, keep you there. But the sound of your voice ringing out turns him on the spot, and you're by the black lake, picking daisies with Sirius to make daisy chains. The memories come flooding through, reliving his life through the good moments and the bad. He watches you both fight, cry, makeup. Getting together was a long, painful process, too many miscommunications, missed opportunities. You never did nail down how to express any feelings other than anger and frustration.

But the moment he had you, Remus never let go.

He watches the memories flash by, remembers every one with a heart so full it could burst. A beautiful life, is what he had. Painful, marred by coldness and death and a beast in his heart that he could never tame. But it was beautiful, and it was full of laughter and love, and joy because he had you.

There's your first kiss, heated and mid argument - because back then, Remus had to rile you up enough to snap just to get a lick of emotion from you. You were brave in many ways. Emotions were not one of them. All the milestones are there, flitting past faster than Remus would like. The end of O.W.L. exams, the party that followed, the frantic, unpracticed hands that flitted over each other's bodies in a secluded hallway that night. Summers at the Potter Estate, lounging in the meadows by the cool stream, fires and empty cans of cider, laughing until his bones hurt and his eyes shone with tears.

Your first flat, old and dingy, but you'd danced that first night in the kitchen for so long that the broken heater didn't matter. You'd made it a home.

The day Remus proposed, terrified out of his bloody mind, shaking so hard he dropped the ring box and you'd yelped as the silver banded ring went flying. He saved for years for that ring. You'd said yes, tears of joy and love and elation at spending the rest of your life with him, and spent the next hour looking for the ring in the grass with the help of Padfoot.

You walking down the aisle, a vision of pure beauty, that signature smile you reserved only for Remus, who was waiting at the end wondering what on earth he ever did to deserve you.

Snippets of a life well-spent fly past in a hurry, the blink of an eye, and Remus begins to feel melancholy. The rest of eternity as a conscious soul, reliving all of his best memories, but missing you still. He wonders if you feel the same, if you're watching the best parts of your life fly by, wishing there was more time, more words, more everything.

"We wasted so much time forgetting what life was like, then." Your voice is soft, wistful.

Remus turns and you're there, lips pressed in a thin line, looking very much like you're ready to scald him for following you this far. But Remus Lupin decided a long time ago that he'd follow you to the ends of the earth, so what is death, to that?

"I never forgot. It just got hard to get back to that, I suppose." He wants to reach out and touch you, see if you're real, or a figment of his imagination.

You hum in pensive agreement, "I was always happy with you. You know that, don't you."

How could he ever doubt it? "Down to my soul."

That smile. That mischievous, knowing, loving smile that Remus knows like the skin and bone of his body. Your hand extends to him, as real as the day he took yours in his, and promised to love you until death parted you both. Your chin jerks to the white plane ahead, Remus has no idea how far it stretches or where it goes, but he follows you, anyway, hand in yours.

"Everyone's waiting for us." You tell him.

So, Remus follows you home.

"Do you really think this is a good idea?" Jessica asked through the commlink. "This is risky, even by your standards."

"It doesn't matter. The quicker we find Miles, the quicker we get out of here." Miguel muttered into his earpiece as he walked through the busy streets of Earth-42's New York.

"Yes, but blending in? For all we know, a version of us exists here."

"Which is why you need to stop talking and start looking, Jess." Miguel hissed a little too loud, earning looks from a few passerbys. He winced. Jessica had a point. If a version of them did exist in this universe, it would be best not to bring attention to themselves.

"Miguel!"

And... that was now thrown out of the window. Cursing under his breath, he turned around reluctantly to face the person who called him—only to find that it was you.

His eyes widened, and his lips parted at the sight of you. Never in a million years did he expect to see her again. But here you were, the absolute spitting image of her. Your clothes were exactly the same things she would wear, your hair and makeup done the same way.

Finding different versions of people in different universes was not uncommon. There's literally a society uniting the different universes' own Spider-people, for God's sake. But Miguel didn't expect this. He didn't expect a carbon copy of his dead wife on a universe where Spider-Man did not exist.

He should've said he wasn't Miguel, that you were mistaking him for someone else. Hell, he shouldn't have stopped and turned around in the first place. He didn't know what came over him, but in a second, he had his arms wrapped around your body.

"Miguel, hon, are you okay?" You asked, your voice laced with surprise and concern. You had no clue that the man who was hugging you was not your husband. At least, not your husband in this universe.

Miguel grunted in response, his ability to string words together to form a sentence rendered broken by your presence. He squeezed you tighter. He couldn't believe he was holding you in his arms.

You weren't the same woman he fell in love with. He knows this. But he couldn't help himself. You looked exactly like her. Felt exactly like her. Sounded exactly like her. Shit, you even smelled like her.

"Damn it, Miguel, keep it together! She's not your wife!"

Hearing Jess' voice snapped Miguel out of his stupor. Remembering his mission, why he was there in the first place, he pulled away from you. He didn't want to. He wanted to hold you longer. But he knew that if he did, he wouldn't have been able to stop.

"Honey, what's wrong?" You asked, cupping his face in your hands. God, how he missed feeling the warmth of your palms. "You're acting weird."

"I'm fine, sweetheart." He gave you a small smile, his hands wrapping around yours and his lips pressing a kiss on each of your wrists. "I just missed you, that's all."

You laughed. "What are you talking about? You saw me this morning."

Miguel could only chuckle in an attempt to hide his sadness. What was only hours for you was months for him. "Right. I did."

"Are you sure you're okay, though?" You asked again, eyebrows furrowing and the corners of your lips downturned.

"Don't worry about it, darling. I am."

He wasn't. But you didn't need to know that. You didn't need to know that in another universe, the two of you were married. You didn't need to know that you had a daughter together. You didn't need to know that he loved you and your daughter more than life itself, only for him to lose you both.

"Listen, I have to go. I'm having lunch with a friend. But I'll see you later at Doctor Nguyen's, okay?" You placed your hands on your stomach, a smile forming on your face. "I can't wait to see her again."

Miguel swallowed the lump in his throat before forcing himself to smile. Only now he noticed the bump on your stomach, carrying a different Miguel's Gabriella. "Yeah, me too."

With a kiss goodbye on his cheek, you walked away, blissfully unaware that he was not your Miguel. He watched as you disappeared around the corner, knowing it was the first and last time he was ever going to see you again.

But that didn't matter. He'll find Miles. He'll make sure the canon isn't destroyed. He'll make sure another version of himself wouldn't have to suffer the loss of his family the same way he did. He'll make sure you and your kid were safe.
