It’s the birthday of novelist Elizabeth Bowen (books by this author), born in Dublin, Ireland (1899). She’s known for writing about British upper-class society in novels such as The Death of the Heart (1938) and A World of Love (1955).

Anne-Laure Oberson, Moscow-Vladivostok. One of 55 finalists in the Dummy Award 2011 competition at the 4th International Photobook Festival, Kassel.
Taking photographs from the train -- I love to do it, but I never get it right, never manage to capture that feeling of sitting still while the scenery is pulled by. (That's the way I feel, anyway.)
I was very happy to see this book at Kassel because I knew Anne-Laure Oberson (@aloberson) more than ten years ago, when I worked in the MoMA photography department and she was an assistant on the Rodchenko exhibition. I believe she took these photographs on a trip she made on the Trans-Siberian Express (is it still called that?) shortly after that. She is now curating projects and exhibitions internationally.

Preston Bus Station (2010). Photographs by Jamie Hawkesworth, Adam Murray and Robert Parkinson. Printed on tabloid size newsprint in color and black and white in an edition of 500. Featured in a display organized by Self Publish, Be Happy (http://selfpublishbehappy.com/).
Hawkesworth, Murray and Parkinson comprise the self-publishing photobook and zine entity Preston is my Paris. Judging by their (many) (joint and individual) publications, they are young and energetic, and enjoy design and production as much as photography. They appear to be taking on the challenges of self-publishing with gusto.

Some of the key elements that caught my eye:
The tatty appearance of the gold paper covers. I hope this isn't cleaned up for the published version.
Is this portraiture? Documentary? Narrative? Staged? I can't really tell ...Â
The book is in two sections, which can be opened together or separately, so the viewer can create his/her own page sequences -- very clever.
