What's a little robin to do when he is thrown from the nest prematurely?
Dick is one of the most important characters in the Batman universe. He has helped shape Batman, helped mould his successors of Robin, and leads his own superhero team.
And throughout everything, he smiles.
He smiles, so no one thinks to ask if something is wrong.
Bruce watches. He notices when his son slips. He lets him pick himself up, because Dick is his own man, his partner, and Bruce firmly believes that Dick is a better man than he.
Tim is haunted by his own demons. He relies on Dick, but he, too, does not push. How much can one man take before he crumbles? Tim is careful not to push.
Damian does not think that Dick is fallible. Does the sun ever not rise? So too will Grayson never fail to rise to the challenge. Children are loath to think of their parents and idols as fallible.
Time teaches them differently.
Only Jason will call Dick out, loudly and boorishly. He will interrupt meetings, he will yell and shout and antagonize Dick's followers, because they are blind, they can't see him breaking-
Jason can't see his big brother break. He doesn't know what to do if Dick crumbles.
(He is prepared for Tim to break. Jason has a contingency plan, which involves sitting on Tim and putting him into a headlock while Damian sedates him).
So Jason barges into meetings, into Dick's house, and physically picks him up in a fireman's carry, and loudly declares his intent to kidnap his own brother. He waves his firearms (unloaded) and always makes Wally cry.
Dick let's himself be carried off, because maybe Little Wing needs a friend tonight. They crash in Jason's safehouse (number 2 of 300) and Jason throws a blanket over the pair of them while they eat ramen.
Dick falls asleep to Jason's recording of Cass singing the Jigglypuff theme.
Jason then sends a picture of a sleeping Dick to Damian with the caption “kidnapped”. Damian proceeds to lose his tiny mind, every single time.
Because Todd is unstable, is he not? He is ways on the brink, so close to breaking-
Bruce has to tackle Damian from gutting Jason at four in the morning.
Dick wakes up each time feeling safe and rested and knowing that his little brother is looking out for him.
And that gives him the energy to put the smile back on his face.
