Growing up, Finn’s heroes were his parents. He didn’t know much about his dad but idolized them both all the same. He adopted the music his dad liked, the movies his mom loved, and the attitude about life placed into the world by both. He was a typical kid, rambunctious and hyperactive. Atypical of him was how much he struggled in grade school; Finn lagged behind on his reading scores and had great trouble focusing. He was never unkind to teachers, but his vocal frustrations in the classroom led to plenty of calls home to his mother. When he was eight, he was diagnosed with ADHD, and the outbursts started making sense.
Drumming lessons were a great outlet for him, as were sports: baseball little league, and then high school football once he got skilled enough to tackle and be tackled. He’ll always be thankful for his mother for being supportive in these efforts, and cheering on his progress. Finn was never really passionate about school, but with time he got really into learning, and he was always quick to pick up those who needed a helping hand. He didn’t believe in any god or gods, but he did believe in paying things forward. It kept him humble, perhaps too humble, and most importantly it kept him reaching for more. He had hopes of perhaps joining the military after finishing school (college seemed too lofty for him to pursue at the time), but his interactions with the local recruiter turned him off the idea. It seemed far too strict, and worst of all, too far away from everyone he knew and loved.
At the same time, Finn had a high school English teacher who really inspired him to pursue a career in education. He could see himself helping a future kid like himself, who knew something was different about themselves but didn’t have the words or security to express it. In theory it was a great idea; Finn just hadn’t known how much studying it involved. After completing a degree in Childhood Education and doing a subject matter certification, he’s since moved to student teaching at the local elementary school. The job doesn’t pay well enough to live in California on though, so he also buses tables on the weekend (and gets free dinners there, so it’s pretty much a win in his mind). He’s managing his ADHD fairly well in adulthood, but like anything he has his bad days, too. Finn sees a psychiatrist every couple weeks to check in, and though he finds it extremely helpful he’s not exactly vocal to friends about the issues he deals with day-to-day. To most, he’s just Finn: teacher-in-training, doting son, lover of junk food, and 80s rock fanatic.
