when karai talked, cathal always listened. and he did so earnestly, which was a rare thing. hell, he hardly ever listened to anyone save for his parents. they deserved his respect, and so did this woman who gave him a meaning in life. when she spoke of saki being engulfed in his revenge, cathal said nothing. everyone was well aware of the sickness that caused him to make many horrible decisions. when karai resurrected him, cathal did nothing to stop her. when she started doing saki’s dirty work, cathal never stopped her. perhaps he should have from the start, then none of this mess would’ve happened. cathal glanced over to his friend, noticing that she was idly brushing her fingers along her scarred hand. the one in which saki had tainted in her dream. he knew that it still hurt her, though she never showed any indication of it. well, at least not in public. reaching out, cathal took her hand in his, bringing it to his lap. when karai didn’t stop him, the soldier started to unwrap the white binds that hid her story. once free, he gently pushed his thumbs against her palm in a massaging manner. it was the only relief she could get, so it seemed. “i would seek revenge for you.” it was stated in a matter-of-fact tone. if anything happened to karai, cathal would not hesitate to find revenge. and unlike saki, he believed he could be successful without driving off the deep edge. “i would not f-fail in my quest. not if it mmmeant avenging you.”
the woman hadn’t even been aware that she was rubbing on her scarred hand. not until cathal took it into his own and started to massage it. the pain that had pricked at her palm now disappeared, allowing karai to relax a little. his words about avenging her caused both pride and sorrow to well in her chest, frown tipping at her lips. though she knew he meant what he said, and that he meant well, she couldn’t bring herself to want him to risk becoming insane just to seek his revenge. she didn’t want him to become like her grandfather. however, she was in no place to advise him against it, for karai knew that if anything happened to him... she would not hesitate to bring down a whole city to avenge him. funny how relations worked like that... too bad she couldn’t say the same for the majority of others in her life. karai tilted her head to the side to look at her loyal soldier, many thoughts running through her mind. what would she have done if he hadn’t insisted on coming with her back to japan? his presence was an important factor in her life from the very moment she picked him up from that college campus. the man had something to him that karai knew would be beneficial to her. she just hadn’t expected for him to become this important. a sigh bubbled, karai’s shoulders sagging in slight defeat. “i hope you will never have to avenge me. walk beside me at your own will and we shall accomplish more than before.”
