“This year marks our thirtieth race around the world, thirty seasons of teams bound by friendship, family, and even some people who just band together for the chance at the prize. But this year, we want to remove that dynamic,” Phil said, rubbing his hands together gently.

The cameras were whirring around them, trying to get every shocked face and gasp from the teams. Louis could feel a ringing in his ears, a new nervousness he hadn’t felt during the entire journey to this competition.

He was sweating more now, more than he could blame on the California sun, as Phil started to read the names of the new teams, the members hugging their loved ones before joining a complete stranger in their new allotted spot.

He didn’t ever really fall asleep. The dawn sun was peeking through his curtains by the time he realized he had stayed awake all night, and he figured it was too late to try and sleep now. Instead he bundled back into his coat, tucking his pelt into it and doing a fair bit better job at hiding it than he did as a child. He hesitantly opened the back door, locking it behind him and wandering down to the sea.

Harry stood there, foam lapping around his ankles, icy pin pricks shooting up his legs from the temperature and clouds appearing around his face with every exhale. The sun was peering weakly through the gray clouds, not yet strong enough to bring any warmth.

Birdy trailed behind them, her lead held loosely in Niall’s hand. Both women were dressed to the nines, though not in a ladylike way: they wore black vests over starched white collars, embroidered delicately with roses and thorns. Supple calfskin chaps protected their legs, and the horse’s tack had been polished until it shone. A pair of irons were buckled to Harry’s hip, a single six-shooter on Niall’s. It was a Sunday, so most of the town was in church. The streets were eerily quiet as such, the only sound coming from the steady plod of horse hooves on the dry earth.

summary: The first Harry that Louis met was at his third school in as many years, and had shoved Louis’ head into the toilet when he walked into the mens restroom. Some slurs had been used, but the whole incident was kind of blurry thanks to the concussion he got when his head hit the tile floor.

The second Harry was a TSA agent when Louis was sixteen, returning from a trip abroad. The agent had smirked at Louis passport. “Layla, huh? Should think about dressing a little more feminine, no guy is gonna want you looking like that.”

Louis doesn’t want to see if “third time’s the charm” applies here. He’s finally secure in his life and happy, and he doesn’t want the heartbreak if his soulmate is just another bigot that wanted Layla and not Louis. Sue him for avoiding the pain.
