Welcome to the Science Lab!
My name is Key (link to my main). Im a chemist and most of the work I currently do is with electrochemical gas sensors, though I originally went to school to teach middle school science/high school chemistry! Im also part of local chemistry societies and help run a chemistry conference every year!
This blog is a space for me to share all the nerdy science stuff I find, and I hope for it to be a fun, interactive space! Enjoy!

My FAVORITE THING is researchers who wholeheartedly embrace the Ms. Frizzle aesthetic and wear their field of study on their literal sleeve. Everyone in the invasive crayfish consortium has tiny lobster-print shorts or socks. All the middle-aged dad scientists here at the lab have shirts with fish and/or fishing tackle patterns on them. My moss specimen and ammonite earrings keep getting noticed by women who are wearing silver fishbone-shaped or native plant-themed earrings themselves. Every single person on the outreach team has at least one shirt with an anchor pattern on it from Old Navy, and almost all the younger researchers have tattoos featuring their research interests – one fisheries biologist has a half-sleeve of native species she literally uses as an outreach tool. We are self-aware and having a blast with it, honestly.

Heads up… it’s Fossil Friday! 🦕 The Museum's Apatosaurus, collected at the turn of the 20th century, was the first sauropod ever mounted. But did you know that for years, this mighty dinosaur was displayed with the wrong skull? Using incomplete remains, scientists speculated that Apatosaurus was closely related to another sauropod: Camarasaurus. As a result, a similar skull to Camarasaurus was sculpted and placed atop Apatosaurus’ body (pictured), where it remained for decades. As new research emerged, this reconstruction was updated. To this day, only one Apatosaurus has ever been found with its skull attached! You can visit Apatosaurus in the Museum’s Hall of Saurischian Dinosaurs. We’re open daily from 10 am–5:30 pm. Plan your visit.

Chinese Academy of Sciences researchers report that fossilized entomopathogenic fungi from mid-Cretaceous amber reveal some of the oldest direct evidence of parasitic relationships between fungi and insects, suggesting that Ophiocordyceps fungi originated approximately 133 million years ago and underwent early host shifts that shaped their evolution. Entomopathogenic fungi have evolved extraordinary ways to turn insects into unwitting accomplices in their own demise. Among the most famous are the "zombie ant fungi," Ophiocordyceps unilateralis, which infect carpenter ants in tropical rainforests. After infecting the ant's body, the fungus hijacks the host's nervous system, compelling it to abandon the safety of its nest.
