Getting a phd and starting to write fics be like, type appendix instead of appendage while writing smut or talk about syllabi instead of syllables in emotionally charging scenes. And peerless translates to the wonderful world with no peer reviews. Doing great and all that.
The recent tagging discourse has been focusing on ”the responsibility of writers”. My sad experience and hot take: Ao3 readers I’m begging you to PAY ATTENTION TO THE TAGS and not give writers shit because you
1. Missed them
2. Chose to ignore them
3. Didn’t even read the fic (but anyway decided to comment that the tags should be changed)
Fic readers, you do realize that writers cannot possibly know about your individual triggers within a kink tag??
If I tag a fic where the canon age difference is 5y as ”age difference”, I think it’s pretty obvious that it must be more then. I’m not guessing whether YOUR personal trigger is 6.,7, 10 or 15 years. Age difference is tagged, there are no minors in the fic…
With this logic, I should announce inches when tagging size kink, I guess? Just not to offend anyone.
Fic readers telling fic writers that it’s their RIGHT to have all fics tagged like fic writers are just some content machines ❌
Actually, no. It’s not a right. Maybe the writer is fine with lesser engagement? Maybe they don’t want to give away the plot? Many reasons there and I’m pretty sure none are out of MALICE.
A request for readers, then: if fics are tagged properly, stop giving writers shit in the comments starting with the announcement that YOU DIDN’T READ THE TAGS! That’s just fucking RUDE.

Comments from one fandom I have received in a few months:
”I didn’t read the tags and now I regret reading the whole thing”
- Thanks for telling me, there was also an additional warning in the author’s note you missed that too and made me feel like crap. I actually deleted the whole fic because of this.
”I haven’t read the fic but I think that you should’ve added the X archive warning.”
- Read first, complain later. Also, I’m using the choosing not to use AWs tag.
”Character X should’ve treated character Y better.”
- This was a charity fic with the prompt ’babytrapping’ (tagged! Also dubcon, tagged!)… don’t know how you ended up thinking that they’d be morally pure.
”The concept is nice but you should have tagged the larger age gap better. Some people like me want to know that stuff. Oh but you didn’t do anything wrong, just wanted to let you know.”
- It was tagged reverse age gap but didn’t know that making it 10 instead of 5 was an issue (it’s not… 40) and ALSO the age gap is mentioned literally in the beginning of the fic after about one min of reading and before the other chara is even at the scene so no dirty traumatizing business there. I’m sure that writing your comment took more than the time you spent to reach the conclusion that this fic is not for you. Lecturing is completely unneeded.
All these… have made me feel so bad about my writing. Please. Stop. It. 😭
No to using fic writers’ hard work as your content ❌
So annoyed and pissed at bic accs on social media who screencap snippets of fics they like and share those with their thoughts BUT NEVER DROP THE LINK! In bigger fandoms those might get hundreds, even thousands of likes, and it’s horrible to think that no one would go and read the fic.
So stop it!
Same goes for when you read a fic, kudo it, heart bookmark it and immediately after share the premise on social media as your own thoughts, no link to the fic of course. And it goes viral.
No, we don’t own ideas, but some general respect for all the hard work would be nice.
There is a special place in hell for those who hype your fic on social media and never show up for the reading party.
