Things were on the uphill –– at least, that’s what Jack was trying to convince himself. He was taking it day by day, earning a badge of honor with each day that ended sober. He focused on his work and the things that truly mattered instead –– his wife and kids.
He walked over to Rebecca with a frown, immediately recognizing the concerned tone in her voice. It was definitely a warning to ‘proceed with caution.’
He glanced at the paper, his brow furrowing thoughtfully. “I didn’t know you could make a ‘Z’ in World History,” he commented lightly before releasing a heavy sigh. “Do you want me to talk to him? I’ll talk to him, okay? We’ll figure this out because this is not the Pearson standard.”
“Yes, well, apparently our son has inspired an entirely new grading system, and not in a good way.” She emitted a heavy sigh and placed a hand on her hip, the other in the air as she began to speak again, “I just don’t understand where this is coming from, he’s so smart, I know he’s capable of more than this. Talking to him might not be enough this time, Jack. We have to find out what’s causing this, and if we can’t, we’re going to have to really be on him, make sure he’s getting his work done, maybe get him a tutor, I don’t know.”
Rebecca wasn’t sure Kevin would respond well to having a tutor, and she wasn’t sure punishing him would have any sort of positive effect. It all depended on whether they could find the root of the problem. They’d have to go from there. “Work your Perason magic, baby. I’m at a loss.”
“Jack?” Rebecca called from the kitchen. She stood there, looking over the piece of paper in her hands, still not sure what to make of what she saw. “Babe, can you come take a look at this, please?” It was Kevin’s progress report, and it was...well, less than stellar. He’d never been studious the way Randall was, but he was bright, she knew that. The question was, what was causing this rapid decline in academic performance? Maybe he was too distracted by spending time with Sophie, or maybe he just wasn’t being challenged enough. Whatever it was, she needed Jack’s help to get to the bottom of it. They functioned best as a team; when she was stumped, he’d know what to do, and vice versa. “Here, read this.” ( @sondered )
Losing a spouse is something no one can truly prepare themelves for. Even if you know it’s coming, when it finally happens, it hits you like a bolt of lightning, and Rebecca certainly hadn’t known it was coming. No, not her superhero of a husband, not Jack Pearson. No one would have expected that. Still, it had happened, and now she was left behind to deal with the shock and the grief, and a whole mess of things she’d never had to think about before. Before.
Her life had been split, into before and after. The question she kept asking herself was, what now? What was she supposed to do now that it was after? The answer she came up with and mind you, her children were none too thrilled about it - was to move. They needed a fresh start in a new town, and Riverdale seemed like a good place to begin again.
On their second night, Rebecca attended a PTA meeting; she knew it would be important to have other parents as allies, especially now that she was without Jack.
“This feels like a good town, and a good school,” she said to the woman beside her at the refreshment table. “My gut is right, right? It usually is, except for the time my gut said Crocs were a good look for me, but this doesn’t feel like that. I’m Rebecca,” she said, offering her hand. ( @tryingmother )
starter call! you know what to do.
“Sometimes in marriage, someone has to be the one to push to make the big moves. And oftentimes in our marriage, yes, it was your father. Our marriage wasn't perfect, it's true. But none are. And your father wasn't perfect, either. But he was pretty damn close. As close as they come.”
