a trigger
gives you flashbacks of traumatic events
sends you into an agonizing panic attack
makes your heart skip beats from sheer terror
it does not
mildly offend you
make you feel uncomfortable
gross you out
make you angry
are we fucking done here
Actually, triggers do all those things except mildly offend.
Something brings you back into a traumatic event, and that sends you flying into rage? Trigger.
Something brings you back into a traumatic event, and that makes you physically ill? Trigger.
Something brings you back into a traumatic event, and that leaves you with otherwise unexplained anxiety without an attack? Trigger.
Something brings you back into a traumatic event, and that slowly wears you down until you finally break down crying? Trigger.
A person does not have to have a panic attack to be triggered.
Triggers do all kinds of horrific things to people. What makes them triggers that the reaction interrupts the person’s ability to function. Even if they are able to continue on and hide it until it passes, they are still impaired for the time they are triggered. They are still in pain.
Attitudes like this leave countless people with triggers that don’t fit your narrow description afraid to open up about it and get help. Do not police people’s mental health.
