'Loud bang' sets off stampede at MGM following Floyd Mayweather-Marcos Maidana showdown
Hoard of fans who stormed into the media center during stampede. After the decision was announced that Floyd Mayweather Jr. was awarded the majority decision over opponent Marcos Maidana Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, a scary scene developed outside of the arena. As the crowd left the Grand Garden Arena a loud bang was heard, sending the crowd scrambling, and eventually trampling over one another according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. The Review-Journal report stated around 60 people were injured, with 24 of those being sent to the hospital. 25 ambulances were dispatched to the MGM to treat the wounded. The loud bang ended up being a partition at the Starbucks in the food court around the corner from the Grand Garden Arena falling over, which set off the sea off people to panic. While in the media center rumors of rapper Lil Wayne being involved in the riot and possible shooting floated around and these reports were found to be untrue. But Lil Wayne was involved in an incident that happened as Maidana's camp went by Lil Wayne and other members of "The Money Team' [TMT] and shouting match and near scuffle ensued. I was in the media center as the events were taking place and the frantic crowd went through the seven-foot tall barricade between the hallway and the media center, sending over a hundred fans pouring into the ballroom. The lack of security let the situation go on for several minutes and once some uniformed Las Vegas Metropolitan Police officers arrived the fans were escorted out, settling the crazy scene.
