she wrote a fucking beautifully articulate and UNEQUIVOCAL letter to her fucking senator in support of the equality act making it fucking clear and undeniable where she stands on this issue, she called out this administration for its homophobia and transphobia and did not fucking mince her words she literally called it âdisgusting and unacceptable.â
she wrote the words âOne cannot take the position that one supports a community, while condemning it in the next breath as going against âconscienceâ or âparental rights.â That statement implies that there is something morally wrong with being anything other than heterosexual and cisgender, which is an incredibly harmful message to send to a nation full of healthy and loving families with same-sex, nonbinary or transgender parents, sons or daughters.â
do you know how much that fucking means??? for literally the biggest popstar in the world who started out with the image of ~americaâs country sweetheart~ or whatever to so clearly, unambiguously, loudly, and publicly say those specific words??
AND not only did she say some nice words, she took fucking actionable steps â she blasted this shit out to her fucking 900 million or whatever followers on all her social media platforms in a full-on ~midnight release push~ like she would for a goddamn single she dropped and it wasnât so she could link everyone to her store to buy merch or whatever, it was so she could link them all to a petition she made and tell everyone to write letters to their own goddamn senator. she replaced all her links promoting herself and her music with links to that petition. me! was a fucking dry run for this â she was creating a âsharing-listening-looking ecosystemâ so people would get used to seeing what she was doing and doing it themselves and sharing that, and then sheâs like hey kids you know what else is fun that you should all do too??? DIRECT POLITICAL ACTION. she accompanied her own message with a large donation to glaad, which allowed them to say the same thing: look what taylor is doing. follow her lead.
after she finally came out as a democrat and told everyone to vote before the midterms, there was a huge spike in voter registrations, like more in a 24-hour period than had signed up in the entire previous month. her donation to the tennessee equality project last april basically funded their operations for an entire year. this change.org petition for the equality act reached its goal in 4 hours and that was in the middle of the fucking night. posting it at midnight on the first day of pride month was a statement and itâs already making a huge difference in her lgbt fans who have been largely marginalized for most of her career (partially by design, which sucks but honestly i get it. being closeted sucks and you make shitty decisions in the moment to protect yourself). seeing her make a statement that unwavering and loud has made and will continue to make a huge difference to any queer person who looks up to her or who even just sees a person in her position of massive influence doing that. she is empowering other closeted people to feel brave enough to be vulnerable to come out. sheâs creating a safe space for people, letting them know how many fucking people support them. sheâs providing a way for closeted people to test the waters and maybe share this post because, hey, it was posted by the biggest popstar in the world so itâs not necessarily going to tip people off if i share it too but letâs see if this can pave the way for me sharing why this matters to me personally. what she is doing matters and it matters so much more than your tiny fucking mind can comprehend apparently
