So the fire alarm in our house goes off absurdly often. Typically it’s just out of batteries or someone (namely me) burned a candle too long and it’s gotten to the point where whenever my family hears a fire alarm in our house we just all leave our respective rooms and just casually wander around the house to make sure nothing is actually on fire. Or just flat out ignore it.

I’ve come to the conclusion that we would all die in an actual house fire due to apathy.

Y’know I reblogged this a bit ago and was saved from financial probation and getting kicked out of school because of it, just mere months from graduation. Got a call from the financial aid advisor telling me that they made a mistake with filing my account (or some other sort of clerical error) and said that, basically, they owe me money. Welp.

So I realized something

I grew up in an odd household. I wouldn’t call it abusive but I also wouldn’t call it healthy. Food was a big part of my childhood and not in a great way I guess. My family was EXTREMELY health conscious (still is), and I’m talking drinking a disgusting super green drink every morning, rarely having carbs other than quinoa, no deserts unless it’s dark chocolate, kale/spinach with every meal, and very small portion sizes.

I didn’t realize that this wasn’t great until I went off to college. At the cafeteria I could eat until I was full, didn’t have to fight for food and could choose what I wanted to eat that day. This made me discover that my body was in starvation mode before college and was rapidly converting whatever I ate into fat. I ended up losing almost 15 pounds the first two months.

Another thing about my household is that there were absolutely no snacks. No chips, no candy, no pretzels, no crackers, no popcorn, etc. We had fruit and unsweetened yoghurt. This means that when I get a bag of chips or share a snack with a friend my brain goes full lizard mode.

I have very little self control in other words. It’s very very hard for me to eat snacks like this in moderation because it was an anomaly in my house and if you didn’t eat your fill the moment you saw it, it would be gone.

Another side effect of the snack famine is that when I do eat something unhealthy or tasty like that I feel extremely guilty for indulging.

So yeah, please teach your kids what is healthy. But, instead of forbidding the tasty amazing things that kids enjoy eating, let them indulge and make it a lesson about moderation. It will save them from overindulging in adulthood as compensation for what they missed out on, or feeling extreme guilt and fear towards food.
