“Ice cream is probably the best human invention.” Jo hummed, an ice cream cone in their hand. Even now, some of the smaller luxuries were still novel to them. “Nothing will ever compare to this.”
“Honestly, yeah. There’s so many more flavours now too, it’s almost ridiculous.”

She nodded, a grin on her lips and a yes on the tip of her tongue forgotten when Huihana’s lips met her’s. Once the kiss ended, happiness and warmth buzzed in the pit of her stomach. “I-” Three words on the tip of her tongue. For a moment, she wavered, the familiar fear of the relationship ending again. She settled on, “I love kissing you. Think I’d be a fool if I ever said no to them.”
Huihana felt a tug in her chest as Sidney hesitated. She could feel the missing words, knowing she’d broken them. But she pushed that away, going along with what Sid actually said. “Yeah? No one’s ever said that to me before.”

the older sighed, taking a second to think about how her life was at a standstill for as long as she could remember &. for the most part, all she’s heard was ‘ WAIT, it’ll happen ’ — but then again, waiting was all she’d done. “ wow, i don’t know if telling someone way younger that growing up sucks just as much is a good idea… —— hey !! at least, it’s honest. ”
Huihana chuckled. “Being here sucks significantly less than being at home, but it’s more confusing here. And technically I’m like fifty eight or something if that lets you off the hook?”
Estela balanced a cup of coffee and a bag of fast food breakfast in one hand an her laptop and a pile of papers on her other arm. Her kids were with the sitter for the next few hours, and she planned to spend the time catching up on scientific journals and other things that she’d forgotten to do during the busy school year. When she set her stuff down on a table, her papers slipped off the table, scattering on the floor. “Spurges!!” She muttered as she bent down to pick them up.
Huihana bent to pick up the papers as they fell as her feet. She just heard the muttering from the woman, and frowned. “Spurges?” she repeated, assuming it was some kind of swear in another language.

The smile, growing with Huihana’s words, was involuntary to an extent. Simply being around Huihana once again brought a smile to her. Affection left her buzzing with joy, a large grin across her lips and a slight pink hue to her cheeks. “You are free to kiss me whenever you want, babe.”
“Yeah?” She takes the nervous, happy energy buzzing in her, and leans in to kiss Sidney again. This time, she lingers rather than a quick kiss. Her fingers squeeze at Sid’s.

Sid smiled, unable to keep her grin off her face for any longer even if the fear she felt told her to do otherwise. Happiness buzzed in the pit of her stomach, but she was still afraid. Trust was hard to come by, and when they were first together, she trusted Huihana wholeheartedly. She took a seat on her bed, sitting cross-legged on the corner of it. “I had a lot of fun too. Certainly, a night to remember even if we did just kiss.”
Huihana moved a little closer, sitting near Sid. “I’m glad.” Apologies hung on her tongue, but Huihana had apologised so many times. The words would feel empty. She took Sidney’s hand. “I really missed being with you like that.”

A laugh left her painted lips, She turned around, keeping her hand in Huihana’s. “Don’t worry. If you lose me, we can play a game of Marco Polo but with lightning.”
“Sounds dangerous in a crowd like this,” Huihana laughed. “You might strike the wrong person.”
“Wow. That is really cool. One quick question; I have no fucking clue what you’re talking about.”
“It’s this thing from New Zealand. I still can’t believe you guys don’t have L&P.”

“Hey wait up!” Huihana did her best to keep her fingers locked with Sidney’s as they squeezed through the crowd. “I’m gonna lose you!”
“I’m glad I was able to be here for this.” Kyle says to the person standing next to him. He has been through far more than one person should, but if his experience as a space cop has taught him anything it’s that the registration was absolutely ridiculous. He had a few different buttons pinned to his jacket already. “How about we go check some of this stuff out, huh?”
As a child of the sixties and seventies, Huihana was not unfamiliar with rallies and marches to protest government decisions. Despite being registered, since SHIELD had found her two years ago and had all her information when this began, she’d turned up. Partially because Sid was determined to go, and Huihana was worried for her. It seemed peaceful though, and she hoped it would stay that way.
When a man with buttons for the causes spoke to her, she shrugged. “Uh, sure.”

Her brow furrowed in confusion as she glanced up. “What exactly is it you want me to stop?”
“You’re not making that noise?” Huihana put her hands over her ears, but the noise got no quieter. “Can you hear it?”

In the time since they’ve gotten back together, Sid had felt almost overwhelmed by a feeling of contentedness that she rarely felt before, still within the people of a fresh start. Although she knew the bubble would inevitably pop, that they would clash over something that didn’t matter. “I’m glad you did it.”
Huihana could still feel her heart in her chest, beating above average. “Me too. I want to.. be able to kiss you.” She couldn’t take her eyes off Sidney, she realised. She’d never felt like this before, and now that she wasn’t trying to hide it, it was overwhelming. There was still a skittish temptation to run from it, but Sid’s hand in hers kept her there.

It was a brief kiss, only lasting a few seconds if that. But her heart still sped up. Sid had always been a naturally affectionate person, almost always hanging off the arm of a friend or whoever she was flirting. She Huihana wasn’t too comfortable with affection, at least not in public. So, the kiss surprised her. A large smile spread across her lips, and she kept Huihana’s hand enclosed in her own. “I really wasn’t expecting that.”
Huihana laughed, nervously, as Sid smiled. “Neither was I.” She’d done it impulsively, but hardly anyone around them seemed to have noticed. They didn’t stop or stare or yell. And she didn’t have to notice them. It was freeing, even more than someone just telling her that many people didn’t care any more.

“Blowing the smoke at me. It’s a free country, but you don’t have to be an asshole!” Huihana came from a time when smoking was prevalent and accepted, so she didn’t consider that it might not even be permitted where they were, but she hated having it blown in her face.

“You can’t hear that?” Huihana was sure the boy had been making the noise, but he seemed genuinely confused.

tye nodded. he wasn’t THE BEST at making people feel better ( or maybe he was and he just didn’t realize it ? ) but the smile she gave made him feel a bit better. “ so– did y-you get any cool powers out of it ? c-coming b-back ? “
“Does that happen normally? People get powers from coming back?” Huihana asked, surprised. “Yeah, I did, actually. They told me I always had the mutant gene, but it was latent. Until I was brought back anyway. But now you’ve said that...”
