A Historical Fiction by someone I know
Ice and rain fell from the sky as a dark cloud hung overhead. Merlin sat at the window, watching the hail rain down. The air was still. Sitting in the darkness of the small house, a small hand stroked Merlin’s back. Two parents listened to the battery-powered radio. Waiting, waiting. Waiting for the danger that lay ahead.
Danger.
Bursting out the door, into the howling wind. Screaming, crying. They ran, and they ran, and they ran. Hail bounced off of their backs, the wind trying to snatch them off of the ground. Running, running. Running until one was lost.
Lost.
Crying and sobbing, clinging on. Calling out. Merlin leaped from the young girl’s hands and scampered off, somewhere safe. She was not safe there, but there was no way of telling her so.
She screamed and cried as trees uprooted around her, cars lifted off of the ground, houses torn and broken. Pieces of flying rubble whizzed past her. A crack echoed through the streets, The screaming halted. Merlin knew. He knew.
Dead.
With the sound of the quickly dying wind, Merlin dashed from safety. The truth had to be told. Find the parents, tell them. Tell them. Hopping over debris and fallen trees, searching, searching. He yowled and yowled as he searched. Coming to a stop. Two people. Searching, searching. Calling the name of the child. Merlin padded up to them and meowed. They knew, he knew.
Gone.
Following Merlin, the parents walked through the debris. Uprooted trees, Fallen houses, People searching for people. Reporters speaking to cameras. People aided on stretches. Merlin suddenly hopped over a broken white fence, into the torn up garden beyond it, and stopped. He meowed for them to follow. The parents entered the yard, and stopped. A small hand under the rubble told them everything. Many tears were spilled that day, not just from those parents, but from everyone. Tears of joy and sadness. Tears of joy for the survivors, tears of sadness for the lost. Tears of sadness for the destroyed buildings, tears of joy for the surviving ones. Goodbye, goodbye. Moore, Oklahoma.
Forever.
Schoolwork
Kid: I'm not planning to do any schoolwork this year?
Dad: Why? Hard work never killed anyone.
Kid: I know! And I don't plan to be its first victim!
Airplane Exchange
Pilot: Approach, how far from the airport are we in minutes?
Ground Controller: The faster you go, the quicker you’ll get here.
The only time a goodbye is painful is when you know you'll never say hello again

Quote: Mirror, mirror, on the wall? Who’s the baddest of ‘em all?
Me: All of them. Duh.You don’t even need a mirror to see that.
