Born in 1940 and raised by his mundane mother until he was five years old, Quentin Coldwater came into the care of Catarina Loss at the end of World War 2 at the request of his dying mother upon her discovery of Catarinaâs talents. Quentinâs parenthood in regards to his father is unknown. Agreeing to accept the dying womanâs request, Catarina takes Quentin under her care and raises him as her own; Quentinâs abilities start to manifest soon after his 7th birthday and not incredibly long after that, Catarina decided to relocate the small family to the States in the early 50s during the post World War II era and the economic expansion that followed the end of WWII.
Settling in New York with Catarinaâs close friend, Magnus Bane, close at hand for inquiries; Catarina began teaching Quentin about his skills and although still rather young, Quentin picked up on his abilities rather quickly as he spent a majority of his time with either Catarina or Magnus learning every thing each had to offer him. By the time he was 17 in mundane years, Quentin had been able to master mending magic significantly and often spent his nights assisting Catarina at the hospital she had found employment at; healing becoming a trait of hers that he picked up over everything else, helping her out with trauma patients and broken bones often.
By the 1960s, when Quentin shouldâve looked as if he was close to 30 years old; he still held the look of fresh faced 20 year old, which led Catarina to believe that his aging ceased at around 19 or 20 years old. Continuing his studies whenever Magnus had the time while Catarina was at the hospital, Quentinâs abilities excelled and he ventured further into magic; glamouring becoming a second nature to him like mending. It was during Magnusâs absence to Peru that Quentin first met the beings known as Nephilim, or Shadowhunters, and although Catarina had spent many years teaching him about equality and indifference amongst the Shadow World; Quentin was given his first taste of xenophobia. He had known indifference from the Night Children, as Magnus referred to them as, and had even once or twice been shown the same from the packs of New York before they had gotten to know him but heâd never really dealt with it on a level quite like what he received from the Nephilim.
In attempt to avoid the discord occuring within the Shadow World among Downworlders and Shadowhunters, Quentin relocated back to London until the early 90s when he moved back home to live with Catarina after the death of her mundane fianceâ and there he stayed until the early 2000s when Catarina left to live in Bangkok for a few years to work as a nurse with the less fortunate community in the area. Quentin stayed behind in New York to continue volunteering at the hospital Catarina used to work at as well as set out a goal to open his own bookstore; a dream of his own from his early years in London that grew out of his love for books.
Throughout the early 2000s and well into the present, Quentin has assisted Magnus in several of his appointments involving Shadowhunters and assisted continuously during the Dark War. He also continues to volunteer at the various hospitals that Catarina can be found at. On occasion, he assists at the Scholomance and the Academy; always coming whenever Catarina is in need of him. He currently resides in New York still and maintains his own bookstore, not far from the New York Institute and is always willing to help the Shadowhunters out whenever they or Magnus call on him; a debt he is more than happy to fill for Magnus, as he helped in his training and is probably the only father figure that has ever been in Quentinâs life.
Much like Catarina, which is most likely due to her being the woman who raised him, Quentin is exceptionally skilled in healing magic and is excellent with glamouring magic. Appearing as if he is in his early 20s, Quentin is actually 80 years old; one of the youngest warlocks in the area currently, to his and Catarinaâs knowledge, aside from those newly coming into their abilities.
