landslide // fleetwood mac
i took my love and took it down i climbed a mountain and i turned around and i saw my reflection in the snow-covered hills till the landslide brought me down
Brooke’s b u l l s h i t radar had gotten finely tuned over the years, && right now, it was ringing out loud && clear. If Julian wasn’t here for Peyton, then her name might as well not be BROOKE PENELOPE DAVIS. Her certainty of the matter was concrete. Her opinion of him had been formed practically the moment he stepped foot on to North Carolina soil && there was only the slightest chance he’d end up changing it. Brooke had been a part of the Peyton-and-Lucas saga for far too long to d i s i l l u s i o n herself into thinking that they end up with anyone but each other. Hell, her being caught in the crossfire of two SOULMATES finding their way back to each other is what made her build the walls around her so high she’s a fortress because of them. Can you expect anything less after being hurt by those you love the most ??
“Everyone && their mother,” she counters, her tone icy && sharp. He might be a stranger to this place, but Julian Baker does not deserve one iota of kindness. Maybe she had simply been in New York too long to remember the basics of good ol’ southern hospitality, but how could she extend such a courtesy to him? “You go right ahead && do that. Go back to where you came from.” That was what she wanted, wasn’t it ?? “&& leave my b e s t f r i e n d alone.”
Julian should be anything less than surprised. If the Brooke Davis he had read about in Lucas’ book was anything like the woman that stood before him, she had a mind of her own and no problem voicing her opinion. So far he hasn’t been disappointed. Part of him knows that the woman standing in front of him isn’t entirely the one that Lucas wrote about. It’s been years since the events of Ravens had occurred and no one climbs to the very peak of the mountain of success and doesn’t change. Whether it’s for worse of for better, he can’t really be sure. All he knows of Brooke Davis have been pulled from ink spilled onto pages of a book or tabloids. If he has his way, however, that might just change.
He raises his had and slaps it over his heart, buckling his knees to show her that he had, in fact, received the blow of her icy words. “Oh, wow,” he mutters with a chuckle. “And just what I have I done to offend the Brooke Davis?”
He flashes a grin in her direction. Everyone has always said that even if he didn’t ooze charisma, he could charm the pants off of anyone with his grin.
“Listen, Brooke. I don’t know you and you don’t know me,” he says with a shrug. “I’m just here to make a movie. Whether you choose to believe that or not sounds like your problem.”
That girl was almost impossible to find Butt worth every second of the wait.
Like for a starter.
How You Get the Girl || Nova and Julian || Modern AU
“You know Finn?” Nova asked, setting the empty wine glass down on a waiter’s tray as he passed by. She offered the gentleman a small smile, brushing a strand of loose hair behind her ear. “My dad would get a kick out of your last name, Julian. You see, he’s a baker by trade but he could probably pull a good five dad jokes out of that. Oh, and I’m Nova, by the way. Nova Mellark.”
It was already getting too late for Nova’s taste. Having a four AM shift in one of probably fifty Los Angeles Starbucks, only getting two or so hours of sleep would ruin the work day, even with free shots of espresso. Working as a barista twelve hours a day wasn’t her idea of the perfect job but, it kept her hands busy and it was better than sitting around the beach side condo waiting for Finn to get home from an audition, filming, or a date. Finn was a busy guy and deserved everything he had worked so hard for — it was just living with him was exhausting, especially nights where she was dragged to parties or red carpet events in attempt to meet someone “to make her happy” as Finn would put it.
There were countless of times where she had told him she didn’t need anyone, especially after her last breakup a year ago. It didn’t end as clear cut as she would have wanted but now that Nova was hundreds of miles away, it was easier to not dial his number and call him whenever she felt lonely. A relationship would only make things rocky here. She was planning on leaving after Finn’s next movie was done filming to go and start her own life — and that life didn’t involve designer clothes, beaches, or fancy houses. The future she had planned revolved around hunting, school, and finding the place where she belonged, now that she had helped Finn make his big break.
Now, she stood in the presence of a kind gentleman who seemed to not even bat an eye after spilling pink Moscato all over his shirt. Nova felt bad for being so clumsy after consuming two glasses of wine and wearing the sky high heals Finn insisted on her wearing. This wasn’t her. This wasn’t who she was but, in Hollywood, image was the deal breaker — the rule was to fake it until you make it but yet, Nova had no desire to become famous or star in some movie. She was the sort of girl who felt good in jeans and a t-shirt and her hair tied neatly in a braid, just like her mother had taught her.
“I mean, of course you know Finn. Everyone practically does. I came here with him as his plus one, I guess but, he seemed to vanish. Happens, you know?” Nova paused for a few seconds, looking Julian up and down as she shifted her weight from one leg to another (wearing heals to a party was the wrong idea).
“Do you know where he is? I was just planning on heading out for the night and I needed to tell him because I’m taking my car so he’ll need to arrange a ride.”
Julian doesn’t know what to do with this girl that’s babbling a million miles a minute and still dabbing a napkin on his shirt. For someone that uses his charm and charisma to guide him, he seems to be at a loss for words with Nova Mellark standing in front of him.
He has experience with girls. Someone once told him that his grin probably got a lot of deals signed and a lot of women into his bed, and part of that may be true but his smile won’t always get him everywhere and just by looking at the raven haired girl looking absolutely mortified by the fact that she’s dumped her wine on him.
Julian laughs a little. “Of course I know, Finn. I’m the producer for this movie” He pauses, trying to find the words to continue this conversation. He has’t always been what people would call a “nice guy” and sometimes he has trouble keeping his ego in check. But he wants to change that and getting to know Finn’s best friend might be just the way to do that. “This is Finn’s big break, you know. I know he’s been struggling to get auditions and barely scrapes by getting one episode TV deals. I’m excited that he got him on this project. I think he’ll be the best asset we have to the cast.”
Of course. All business. That’s how he always tries to be with new people. As much as he likes to make friends and getting to know people, he’s not always the best with that. He was a bit of a nerd in high school and now that he’s climbing up the chain in the Hollywood and slowly working his way to being an A-List producer.
He thinks that maybe he should talk about something else though. He can tell that she’s nervous. She’s shifting from one foot to the other before him, crumbling the Moscato soaked napkin in her hand.
“I would assume that “coming here with Finn” meant that you’re his date, but I know better.” He laughs again, flashing that award-winning grin of his in her direction. “I’ve heard a lot about you, Nova Mellark.”
“Also, I could probably pull give dad jokes out of my last name and I’m not even a dad. And I haven’t seen Finn, Nova Mellark, but I’ll offer to help you find him.”

“You saw that?”

“If you’re here for HER, just know that’s not going to happen. I suggest turning around, tail between your legs && going back to LA. Sound good ??”
Julian raises an eyebrow, somehow not surprised by the biting comment that passes through her lips. If anything, he would be shocked if she didn’t throw a stinging phrase his way. He’s never been very good at dealing with such harsh words, and he’s not sure why he wants to try and deal with them now.
“Who said I was here for her?” he asks, eyes scanning her face. She’s not giving away any emotions. Lucas was right. Brooke Davis has a fortress built up around her and letting anyone in is pretty much out of the question. She’s barely said more than two sentences to him and he can already decipher at least that. “But if you’re going to keep talking to me like that I might just waddle to the airport with my tail between my legs anyway, how does that sound?”
He’s trying to joke with her, of course, but after he speaks, he wonders if was a good idea.

If it were up to Nova, she would have called off this tripto Los Angeles except Finnick Jr. insisted on auditioning for some movie to make his big break in Hollywood. California was completely out of her element, filled with restaurants that serve kale salads and designer stores that charges upwards of five hundred dollars for a dress or handbag. It was the polar opposite of her cozy hometown in West Virginia and even after a month of living in a costal apartment, she found adapting to a new lifestyle impossible. Nova couldn’t grasp Finn’s fascination with celebrity culture and the lifestyle of the rich and famous but, he was her best friend – she had to stay to support him, even if it meant working at four in the morning filling coffee orders at the local Starbucks.
It was worth it, in the end. Seeing her friend successful in what he wanted to do made Nova happy, even if she couldn’t find exactly what she was looking for in the Golden State.
Somehow, Finn had dragged her to a Hollywood party where many of the cast and crew of his movie were celebrating the beginning of filming. The cast had been set, the budgets were all aligned. All they had to do was start filming and of course, naturally, a party had to be done at the lead actress’s home on the beach. Finn had went out and bought Nova a dress to wear to this party and practically begged her to accompany her at the party and she couldn’t say no to him. She considered it a favor, so he didn’t have to attend alone but, after an hour of drinks and small snacks, Finn had left her side and was nowhere to be found. The brunette didn’t know anyone at the party, so naturally, she ordered herself another glass of pink wine and started to search the house and the beach for her friend. It was hard walking in heels, running into various perfectly tanned men and women as her search ensued – Finn had practically vanished.
“Why the hell would he abandon me at a party he dragged me to?” Nova asked herself, carefully balancing on her two feet clad in stilettos. “He knew I was out of my comfort zone and he totally abandoned me. What a great friend.”
Her stride was broken by running into a taller gentleman, her wine spilling all over his shirt. Nova opened her mouth, searching for something to say as an apology. The tabloids often shared stories about women spilling drinks on others and how fights would start regarding stained dresses or getting chocolate in someone’s hair. Being buzzed didn’t help much either – her hand found a napkin on a nearby table, so she started to dab at the wet portions of the man’s shirt, trying to laugh the situation off.
“I am so sorry, sir… I was just looking for my friend. Maybe he’ll have a shirt you can borrow for the rest of the party. No wait, I can totally go and pick you up a shirt and bring one back here. Anything to get me out of this party… I don’t know anyone and Finn abandoned me. Are all of these parties awkward? I’m seriously getting that vibe.” Nova’s words rushed together, barely pausing to take a breath. She was so embarrassed and worried that the cops would be called on her. Whoever this man was, he looked important to the party and now she had gone and ruined his shirt. If there was a way to make the party more awkward, Nova had done it. “Or I can just pay for dry cleaning…Just don’t tell the paparazzi. It’ll get Finn in trouble and he needs to be in the good spotlight. Oh my god, what am I saying? I’m sorry, okay?”
Balling the napkin in her hand, Nova offered the victim of her clumsiness a tiny smile.
The night could get worse, right?
Julian never thought he would get here if he was being honest with himself. Sure he’s been dreaming about making a film for the big screen longer than he can remember but he never thought he would actually get to do it. But his short films had gained some notice and he’d been approached to join in on creating one of the latest young adult novel adaptations. It wasn't exactly the groundbreaking piece of cinema he always envisioned in his head, but he’s not John Hughes and this isn’t the eighties. He’ll have to take baby steps if he ever wants to get there. But it’s something. He’s got his foot in the door and he’s got everything to prove, but that also means he’s got everything to lose. He can’t let this film be a flop. His entire career depends on it.
He’s trying not to let himself worry about what might happen if he screws up this opportunity. He’s trying to focus on the party going on around him. The cast and crew were all meeting up to mingle and get to know each other before the first day of shooting begins sometime next week. There’s so many people he shouldn't be able to hear the voices of doubt in the back of his head telling him that he can’t do it, that he’s not good enough. But they seem to be louder than the thumping bass coming from the surround sound speakers.
One of the biggest stars they managed to sign to the film offered to let them have the party at their house. He’s thankful for that. His apartment is decent enough but just not the right setting for shindig like the one they’re having. If he said he wasn't nervous, he would be lying. He can feel his heart beating in his ears and he’s having trouble keeping his breathing even. He’s usually pretty confident, displaying nothing but charm and charisma, but he’s so worried that he’ll do something to screw this up, that he might cause a problem for himself.
He glances down at his watch, before bringing his drink to his lips. He’s thinking now that he should have gone for the alcohol like everyone else but there’s something soothing about ginger ale, and it’s sort of helping to settle the nausea that’s been brewing in his stomach since the moment that he walked through the door.
He’s just finished having a conversation with the screenplay writer, talking about some of the changes to the script that they’ll have to go over before the first day of shooting and he’s turned to go back into the kitchen and get himself another glass of ginger ale (or maybe something stronger). As he turns to leave, he collides with someone, and the scent of pink Moscato reaches his nose and he can feel the liquid seeping into his shirt and onto his chest.
He’s about to open his mouth to apologize because he knows for a fact that he wasn't paying attention to where he was going but the lovely, dark haired girl has beat him too it. She’s babbling away and desperately dabbing a napkin on his shirt and all he can do his chuckle.
“First of all, I don’t think anyone has ever called me ‘sir’,” he says, trying to stop himself from smiling as she girl tries desperately to find a solution to her problem. “And don’t worry about the shirt. It’s no big deal.”
He can’t help but notice how lovely she is. He knows that he’s got more important thing to worry about, but he help but to introduce himself.
“I’m Julian Baker,” he pauses, trying to remember everything that she said. “Did you say Finn? You’re here with Finn?”
I need a Brooke. I really do.
Hi guys! Thank you for the follows! I'm gonna try to get Julian going soon! Let me know if you want to do a thing!
