NOIR CITY: Portland tickets and Passes on sale!

FNF prez Eddie Muller returns to Portland’s Hollywood Theatre Friday—Sunday, August 21—23, for NOIR CITY: Portland, a weekend-long festival of both classic and obscure noir films from the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s.

The festival includes a conversation with Eddie about this year’s program lineup plus a book signing for several of Eddie’s recent titles. This year’s film programming centers around musicians and includes the FNF-funded restoration of The Yellow Canary (1963).

The full program schedule, tickets for individual screenings, and passes are available on the Hollywood Theatre’s website. The festival pass gives you access to all NOIR CITY: Portland film screenings along with A Conversation with Eddie Muller & Book Signing event on Saturday afternoon, August 22. Please note, the V.I.P. passes have sold out.

Interview – The Yellow Canary Stars with Eddie Muller

Living legends Pat Boone and Barbara Eden joined Eddie Muller at NOIR CITY: Hollywood this past April after a screening of The Yellow Canary (1963) to discuss the film and bits of their careers. The Yellow Canary, the Film Noir Foundation’s restoration premiered at Hollywood’s NOIR CITY festival, is a late-cycle film noir with a script by Rod Serling, from a novel by Whit (Touch of Evil) Masterson. The film stars Pat Boone as an egomaniacal pop crooner whose only child is kidnapped — and Barbara Eden plays his wife. The film has a supporting cast that's a Who’s Who of sixties favorites: Jack Klugman, Steve Forrest, Jesse White, Harold Gould, Milton Seltzer, Jeff Corey, Joe Turkel.

A "DANGEROUS" EVENING. Eddie Muller (center), with Turner Classic Movies: TCM host Ben Mankiewicz and TCM VP of programming Charlie Tabesh, at an advanced screening of Muller's documentary, DANGEROUS CITIZEN: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF ABRAHAM POLONSKY, held June 30 on the Universal lot in Burbank. It was the first screening of the film for an audience and it earned an enthusiastic and emotional response from the full house. The film will have its world premiere on August 9at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland.

NOIR CITY Chicago returns to the Music Box

From September 4 - 10, NOIR CITY: Chicago will present "Face the Music!", a 19-film program of crime and mystery films featuring . . . musicians! From early examples of Hollywood noir like Blues in the Night (1941) to jazz-fueled sixties’ gems like A Man Called Adam (1966), the movies feature genuine musical legends like Elvis Presley, Sammy Davis Jr., Hoagy Carmichael, Doris Day, Frank Sinatra, and Dexter Gordon performing alongside film noir favorites including Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Ida Lupino, Dan Duryea, Linda Darnell, and Rita Hayworth.

This year’s film programming includes the FNF-funded restoration of The Yellow Canary (1963), two rarely screen Brit noirs, Terence Fisher’s Face the Music (1954) and Basil Dearden’s All Night Long (1962) featuring Patrick McGoohan as the wily antagonist. Other highlights include Dan Duryea in a rare sympathetic role in Roy William Neil’s Black Angel (1946), based on the Cornell Woolrich novel and Jack Webb’s love letter to jazz, Pete Kelly’s Blues (1955) featuring legendary singer Peggy Lee in an Oscar nominated supporting role.

Screenings on September 4 - 6 will be hosted by FNF prez Eddie Muller. Screenings on September 7 - 10 will be hosted by FNF board member Alan K. Rode, author of Michael Curtiz: A Life in Film.
