I have a concept for a hidden camera show: where I meet with studio executives and pitch them ideas for shows and secretly film their reactions.
Twist, every show I’d pitch would actually be the general outline of a classic (and successful) show, but with a genderbent cast. My main goal is to see if they’d call it “unrealistic” when it has a female main character.
Double points if they call the MC a “Mary Sue!”
“Concept A: She possesses a genius intellect. She completed high school at the age of nine, graduated from Princeton University at age 10, and finished medical school four years later, at age 14. The series opens up on her 16th birthday. She’s the countries youngest doctor.”
Too unrealistic Such a Mary Sue.
“That’s the concept of Doogie Howser, M.D. It ran from 1989 to 1993 and launched the career of Neil Patrick Harris.”
“Concept B: A series revolving around three women and their one male friend. He’s straight and doesn’t date any of them by the way, he’s just a friend. They mostly just hang out and do things normal people would do. Nothing sexed up or exaggerated about it. Really, it’s a show about nothing, many of its episodes are just about the minutiae of daily life.”
Too unrealistic Too boring, no one would watch it without sex appeal.
“That’s the concept of Seinfeld. It ran from 1989 to 1998 and is considered one of the most successful shows of all time.”
“Concept C: She’s a doctor, a medical genius. She’s an unconventional, antisocial woman, a little rough who, despite her dependence on pain medication manages to successfully lead a team of doctors in solving all kinds of baffling cases.”
Too unrealistic, too unlikable a character.
“That was House, M.D. It ran from 2004 to 2012”
“Concept D: The show chronicles the events of Mother, a reporter, who enlists her sister-in-law, a musician, and her best friend (another woman) who’s a stand -up comedian, to help raise her three sons in San Francisco.”
No male influence on these boys at all? Too unrealistic. Conservative America won’t stand for it.
“That was Full House. It ran 192 episodes from 1987 to 1995.”
