it actually shouldn’t look like stuff you would wear (or at least a lot of it shouldn’t)
i’ve seen a lot of praise for modern trek fashion being better than classic trek because ‘people would actually wear that’
look at what people wore as everyday fashion 200-300 years ago, would you wear it? probably not, maybe for the novelty of it, but definitely not every day.
like, yeah this stuff looks crazy
it’s 300 years in the future. some of them are aliens, makes perfect sense to me that they would wear ridiculous extravagant clothes that look strange to my 21st century eye
similar to how if you showed modern fashion (especially alternative fashion/runway fashion) to someone dressed like this,
they would probably think we’re crazy.
yet for some reason modern trek wants us to believe that hundreds of years into the future people still just wear zip up hoodies?
(idk if the spock fit actually is a hoodie or not but come on man, the zipper? nothing more futuristic than a zipper?)
or this dress that looks like i could buy it in a 21st century target?
(not to hate on chapel, she’s just the only one i can find decent pictures of out of uniform)
also why is everything so grey now? when was it decided that people don’t wear colors in the future? i can not find out of uniform pictures where any of these people wear color, all black, white, grey, and maybe a bit of muted green.
tldr
clothing design in star trek should be just as important as clothing design in a period piece. i don’t think a screencap from any star trek should look like it could just as easily take place in the 21st century, i should see some crazy outfits. the clothes can do a lot of the heavy lifting to remind us that this is supposed to be far in the future.
Man, I used to be friends with a guy who was obsessed with this stuff and I remember him texting me a photo of this piece in my late 20′s and I was like WOWOWOWOWOWOW, just like I feel right now. Isn’t history amazing?
Jake is a teenage writer living on an alien space station in the 24th century and he dresses like the elderly piano player in an 1860s cowboy saloon. He looks like he belongs on the set of Firefly.
Yet how can we criticize him when he’s sitting next to Quark, whose outfit appears to be composed of 10 belt buckles, two different sofa fabrics and every single pride flag melted together
Whatever this lady has on. This is peak fashion. She has half an outfit but the half that does exist is absolutely fantastic and I love it

A recent one but still fantastically horrible: Rios' outfit in Stardust City Rag. The awful green jacket with one fur sleeve and the horrendous bright orange feather-adorned hat create something wonderful here

ooooh yes actually i have a lot of feelings abt her clothes bc most of her outfits are...yeah anyways in no particular orderrrrr:
1. this cute outfit that is a fucking fantasy for that goddamned freak barclay oh my god why did he have to have good taste fuck that guy. look at this. off the shoulder, a nice blue, a leg slit. it screams “bad bitch” but is ultimately ruined bc she didnt actually wear it :/
2. regular degular science officer outfit. this is a cute look for her, the shoulder pads are a lil wonky looking but i just love seeing women wear normal uniforms asdfghgf
3. the turquoise outfit. in my last post i waxed poetic about this look. it is truly the defining moment in Deanna Troi Fashion History, i mean LOOK AT IT! the iconary...
4. the cowboy look. the only good image i can get of her is this pinterest gif so asdfghgf sorry. but look at THIS. UGH! rolled up sleeves and cowboy boots (not pictured) she looked GOOD here. honestly it was SUCH a moment
5. the “my mom is crashing my date” outfit. the actual design and pattern of this outfit is a MESS, but! the off one shoulder look was cute and this color is nice on her! plus her hair and makeup was gorgeous...if only the bottom half didnt look like a child’s ballet costume...
6. this look on picard. some people were bummed her outfits werent as flashy or “futurey” or whatever (and tbh i was a lil too), but i think this is so cute! she looks like a mom! she looks like she has a curated instagram where she documents the plants in her garden with quotes about mental health under them. queen
7. the bi holodeck “i kinda dont wanna get married to this guy i dont know but also idk he might be nice but my ex-bf-still-imzadi is upset” outfit. this look is so asdfghjhgfd its A LOT but it also has a lil tender spot in my heart. the ponytail was cute and this catsuit/jumpsuit is fun and spunky so its valid but barely
