Israel has systematically worked to disable the population, and to destroy all means for disabled people to survive. Nader's father has experienced his health conditions become increasingly severe. He has stents in the main arteries of his heart due to blocked arteries. He was diagnosed with bladder cancer and needs surgery to remove a tumor. However, medical evacuation from Gaza is extremely expensive. Coordination costs can be over $12,000 per person, and Nader's father cannot make this journey alone.

Earlier today, Nader's father had to be brought to the Intensive Care Unit at their nearest hospital. He is now on life support. The systematic destruction of Gaza's healthcare system has left 94% of hospitals destroyed, and none of the remaining 36 are able to operate at full capacity. There are medicine and medical supply shortages. In this state, healthcare bills for this care are even more expensive. One of the only asexual activists is Yasmin Benoit, a Black woman. She has raised so much awareness for the community. She was the first asexual person to lead Pride in London, she started the #thisiswhatasexuallookslike movement and is THE leading voice for the community.

Not to bring the serious to a very fun post, but this reaction is exactly what Mamdani is working for with his image, because in a very real way the most effective way for him to be The Mayor is if he looks like The Mayor.

This is a man who is VIOLENTLY aware that when it comes to conservatives, he is a Muslim first, a Brown Man second, an Immigrant third, a Socialist fourth, and a human a very distant fifth, if considered at all. He was also a young adult during the Obama Years and will have seen Republicans rip Obama to shreds for wearing a tan suit instead of a dark one and use literally ANY excuse they could to try and degrade his image.

Despite the fact that a mayor who wears a T-shirt and jeans might "seem more approachable" in the eyes of the average American, Zohran Mamdani knows that someone with his profile fundamentally cannot get away with that the way his White colleagues can. He has instead put in the effort to look professional and BE approachable, because not only does it make it easier for him to reach and represent his constituents, it forces everyone, including both his opponents and establishment Democrats, to engage with the work he is doing instead of judging his image. The fact that he is always seen in a suit and is recognisably The Mayor is, while also something he has fun with, a deliberate choice to ensure he is as inarguably A Professional Politician To Be Taken Seriously. The added humour of e.g. the hi-vis is a bonus, only achievable because he works so hard to Look Like The Mayor.

I write these words with tears in my eyes, overwhelmed with fear for my father. Help Nader, please. He needs pain medication and surgery and to get those things he needs exorbitant amounts of cash. They don't have much in savings right now, last time Nader reported for living expenses such as rent/etc (extremely high and not fixed) is only a little over $10k, and this is dwindling because of gaps in donations.

That might sound like a lot, but it's absolutely not. If I had $10k, with the price of living so high I could survive about 6 months in my city before running out of money for rent and groceries, I didn't even factor my utilities.

Imagine a city that has been for the most part cut from the outside world. Resources are limited and the money is draining fast. If you're working class with a job, think about how hard it is for you to save money in an economy that may be suffering but isn't being strangled.

It's almost impossible to get ahead. And to get out is hundreds of thousands with his family members and father's medical expenses.

I can't fathom how hopeless he must feel.
