Mattress dominoes: a world record falls…and falls…
A world record is a marvelous thing to be a part of…for a while, at least. Because, of course, records were made to be broken and, with the exception of Joe DiMaggio’s timeless 56-game hitting streak or Ernie Nevers’ 87-year-old NFL single-game scoring record, in the end all will be broken.
Well, step aside, Joltin’ Joe, posterity has landed its latest mark: the longest human mattress domino chain!
On July 23, 2016, in Wuhan, China, 2016 people with mattresses strapped to their backs formed a 2.4-mile chain that wrapped multiple times around a shopping mall. Ayd Home Furnishings teamed with Chinese mattress maker Stylution and the Association of Taiwan Investment Enterprises to put on the event, which coincided with the retailer’s 24th anniversary. The collective “fall” took 14 minutes and 45 seconds, and eclipsed the recent Guinness World Record standard set by 1,200 people for Aaron’s Inc., an appliance and electronics-leasing company, on March 22, 2016.
A spokesman for Guinness, a “dominoes expert,” was present at the Aaron’s attempt, helping to assemble the mattress line in a warehouse in Prince George’s County, Maryland. It took 13 minutes and 38 seconds for the entire line of project managers, who had united for an annual meeting, to fall—and they achieved it on their first attempt. The Aaron’s record in turn broke the previous mark, set in 2012 by 1,150 people at a warehouse in Germany.
All 1,200 mattresses were donated by Aaron’s to District of Columbia-area organizations focusing on ending poverty and providing shelter to homeless families.
The first ever human mattress dominoes world record was broken in 2009 by 80 people in Sydney, Australia.
Where will it all end? Most likely on someone’s back!
