I think what you’re describing with Uglies is what TV Tropes calls an “Unbuilt trope”, where a work that originated/codified various tropes treated them in nuanced, less cliche ways than later works using the same tropes.

The weird thing about reading Extras and then rereading Specials after years is that I’d forgotten the details of what happened in the latter. So when they came in telling us Tally Youngblood was the most famous person in the world, the one who made the mind-rain fall, I went with that. Yeah, my girl Tally and her sweetly deserved admiration. She’s come so far.

Then I read Specials and… what was the mind rain?

‘Cause it wasn’t one event. It was a gradual spreading of cure from city to city, inching across the globe.And Tally very specifically didn’t help with that. She didn’t tell her city that Diego hadn’t attacked them, then she ran off into the wilderness to protect it and refused to help any of the people who sent her messages after. Including Shay, who’s suddenly on the team in Extras.

So some years have passed, the story’s changed. Tally’s private victories of rewriting her mind become part of the epic mythology, breaking into the Armoury becomes an action taken with intent to match its effect, and in the wilderness she earns the spotlight of the world again as its voice of restraint. And violent restraints. Shay and Fausto blow off Diego in favour of what’s eerily similar to their lives as Cutters, including calling themselves that.

And the world keeps turning.
