i think it's very funny that near dislikes kiyomi both when she appears to try talking back to kira on television (of course she is actually doing this on light's instructions but near doesn't know that yet) AND when she is acting as 'nothing but a stupid kira worshipper' like. hey near. what do you want from her.

none of these thoughts are fully boiled yet but i think kiyomi and mikami can easily be interpreted as foils to near and mello (not necessarily in that order). misa gets written out because ohba's a loser but also, through this lens, because she doesn't fit the same idolization vibe that these four have going on, because she has known light for five entire years while near and mello don't know L and kiyomi and mikami don't know light - in kiyomi's case she remembers light from years ago but obviously doesn't know he's kira until much much later. they are all sort of going off their own interpretation of the orders someone else gave them. successor arc!
anyway about kiyomi specifically, i think mello is the more immediate parallel because they are both the old world's runner-up, the best dresser who died like a dog okay labb isn't canon but mello's introduction to us is him thinking he's always second place. kiyomi is second place to misa in to-oh arc. she gets chosen by mikami and not light. she gets second place in the list of ranked nhn female announcers! and then she gets catapulted to stardom unlike mello but the desperation to claw at superiority remains. she threatens to kill light if light is lying to her about misa and says she's not joking and it's just this really sad attempt at a power grab to me; she literally has the notebook pages but she still intuitively feels like she's under someone else's thumb (AND SHE IS). it reminds me a little bit of mello threatening to shoot near: i'm not a tool for you to use to solve the puzzle. (and both of them turn out to willingly become exactly that.) and of course: they die together in an abandoned church <3 yayyyyyyyyy <3
but!!!! near!!!! kiyomi and near!!!! well first mikami and mello are more rogue agents while kiyomi and near stick closer to the original plan of, haha, The Only Man I've Ever Respected (this is not true for near. near respects mello.) they share an arrogant streak that from my memory mello does not really have. they love doing passive aggressive snipes at people. they both are frequently coded with wearing white. they are reluctant to kill. most of all they put significant importance in being their own person and expressing their own views (we first meet arc 2 kiyomi through mikami's eyes where he tells us she visibly wants to chime into his TV debate so bad) and this irony is what lies at the center of their characters, because both of their roles are to follow someone else's footsteps. but ultimately kiyomi dies doing exactly what light wants and near survives by not doing what L would

We don't know if carrying the pregnancy was the worse choice for Lollys. It might be, it might not be. I just don't want to go with the premise that it was, unquestioned.
This is because we don't know what Lollys wanted. People with intellectual impairments and delays get to make choices about their lives too (or they should, to the greatest extent possible). Even important decisions. Even bad decisions. Fuck knows that fully intellectually able people make choices where they don't understand the consequences and other people do. It happens all the damn time. As far as we know, the decision to keep the pregnancy (or not)/consent to an abortion (or not) is not reaching any sort of 'endangering self or others' threshold.

Now, Lollys appears to need a carer. But we don't have the details on her condition. Whatever it is. We don't know what she understood about what happened and about her options, or how long explaining might take, or if it's possible. Maybe Lollys could reach the standard of informed consent. Maybe she couldn't. We don't know.
If Lollys did not want to take moon tea, either because she didn't understand what it was for or, hell, just because she didn't like the taste, should she be forced to take it anyway? We've got Lysa's backstory to tell you why that might be a very bad idea indeed, even without the further complications of Lollys' disability. I sure don't think it's a great idea to follow up the assault Lollys suffered with more assault. Certainly not something to do lightly, even assuming that giving the decision to Lollys' primary carer was absolutely 100% necessary and not just assumed because Lollys is "dim-witted". It's well within the realms of possibility that Tanda personally couldn't bear to force a medical procedure or medication on Lollys regardless of what a maester might have advised - Tanda's got her own trauma, too.
Anyway. Given what Westeros is like, I seriously doubt anyone tried to involve Lollys in her own healthcare. What we've got in the text is this:
"You should give her dreamwine," Shae said, "like Lady Tanda does with Lollys. A cup before she goes to sleep."

Looks like Tanda's got no problems drugging Lollys whatever Lollys knows, doesn't know, wants, thinks, etc. Lollys is descibed as eating of her own volition; specifying that Tanda gives Lollys the dreamwine indicates that Lollys isn't necessarily drinking this because she thinks it's delicious and/or helpful. We also see this during the Battle of the Blackwater:
"She's been sick," Lady Tanda said. If a babe can be termed a sickness, Sansa thought. It was common gossip that Lollys was with child.

There are, however, several reasons for Lady Tanda not to say outright what's going on. Saving face, concern for Lollys, things like that. So this one's got dubious weight as evidence.
But from what little we have, my opinion is that Tanda probably didn't want to believe Lollys was pregnant and missed the window where Lollys' pregnancy could be safely terminated. It looks to me like this situation likely came out of the difficulties of caring for someone, and then true concern for Lollys' safety. We know that Tanda was "half-crazed" with fear for Lollys on the day of the bread riots and got her request for help for Lollys in before Boros Blount reporting on a member of the Kingsguard missing (Tyrion IX, ACoK). I think she cares about her daughter; I don't think Westeros has good structures for her to do so while respecting Lollys' autonomy.
Problematic? Either way? Absolutely. Deliberate cruelty to Lollys or indifference to her wellbeing? I doubt it.

i completely understand why arc2 fandom tends to not care about light (and why light fandom tends to not care about arc2) but it does make me sad that the sheer comedy canon offers of 'haunted detective orphanage with a mortal god produces two geniuses with entwined pasts who are obsessed with each other. they are hunting down a 23 year old office worker' is often neglected. the 23 year old office worker is the main character and learned about the orphanage two seconds ago.
one of the geniuses has to explain the other one to the 23 year old office worker and keeps pausing to hype him up and the 23 year old office worker still thinks they are like, normal about each other
evidence light and misa are perfect for each other: have the exact same thought process of "i will manipulate them into dying for me! what do you mean that means they'll die"

copying my own tag because i think it IS a thing - kyoko specifically says "i see you every month!" in the anime whereas everyone in the manga is just saying things like "she's a model" and "she's so cute" which probably implies misa has had a longer career (this scene happens in april so august is longer ago than march is). the anime writers deliberately made her more established!
i was wondering the other day how different the japanese and english versions of the notes light makes prisoners write to L are, since the translation must have had to alter them a lot for the L-do-you-know cipher to still work. so here i am translating the plain text of the notes without bothering with the cipher. if you want to look at the original japanese yourself the transcriptions are in the alt text!

googling the phrase i translated to "called to god's land" (神のもとへめされたい) gives me all christian results, as in japanese websites about christian theology, so i figured i might as well write 'god' in the singular. (in fact google is telling me to translate it to "called to heaven" specifically but there isn't any direct mention of heaven in that phrase.) i am not familiar enough with japan's religious landscape to draw any conclusions from this but it's interesting! (and also interesting how viz adds an overt christianity reference in the first note while taking one away in the second note lmao? balances out i guess)
