Album of the year 2018... Ya i know its 112 months late.

Posting this now... So i have it in record I guess. This list has been chillin in my notes on my phone since this time last year.

I’m not a huge fan of deluxe edition albums. I think it’s an injustice to the songs that are added to the album and a complete betrayal of the essence the album was to begin with. Not to mention it’s all just a marketing ploy to sell more records by the record label. 

So let’s start why it’s not fair for the songs added, like this one. This is a great song! I love it. BUT this album has already surpassed it’s honey moon phase for me... soooo I’m not gunna go back and jam the full album for another 3 weeks because of 1 new song. So where does that leave this song? Well... buried away... never listened to as much as it deserves. Maybe this isn’t a problem for single track listeners but I believe it’s important to listen to a body of work the way an artists intends it. 

Which leads me to my next point. It makes me question how this album is intended... was it incomplete before? Are these songs just being slapped on? if they belong now why didn’t they belong before. I just have a hard time believing that the album was intended to be heard with these three extra songs that Flor has added. 

I’m not sold. But that being said I am always excited for new music. I just hate that it tarnishes an album and doesn’t give the new releases what they deserve. I would have much rather seen an EP with the 3 additional songs, the cover of post malone and the remix of  warm blood that they recently released. 

Either way... great song. Rant over.

Pretty excited to be getting into the Waterparks album. Something about their lyrics and their attitude remind me of myself. There is something cute and innocent about them, that resonates with me. I’m just a day and a half into listening to this album but this song is my favorite so far. I know it’s a breakup song but lately I envy the feelings shared in this song. I think it is better to have love and lost then not to love at all.

2017 Top 10 AOTY PART 2

Okay okay okay... the wait has been long enough... and if you’re reading this I’m sure it’s totally killing you. Don’t fret Walt! I’m back for part 2 of my top 10 albums of 2017 review! 

Part 2 here is going to be albums 5-1 so if you missed 10-6 I would recommend you jump on over to my blog and look at my last post. There are some complete bangers on there. I know I know... they’re not as good as the albums I’m about to share but they are pretty darn close. So check em out or.... OR ELSE okay. 

Let’s get to business. 

#5 Paradise by Seaway

This album was an extremely strong follow up to what I considered their break out album colour blind. I feel like Seaway is starting to fine craft their sound and has really been drawing out the nostalgia by borrowing influence from past pop punk legends like sum 41, blink 182 and third eye blind. My favorite song on the album ‘Day Player’ gives me such a 90′s punk vibe that I just can’t get enough. Seaway is definitely one of the current bands of their genre that just GETS IT. Anyways... if you don’t do anything else today you should at least watch this video one of the albums best ‘Lula On The Beach’, if not for the music, for the cutest little wiener dog you will ever see. 

# 4 The Peace and The Panic by Neck Deep I won’t lie... this album didn’t quite live up to the magic of their debut, Life’s Not Out to Get You, but it came close enough to please any real pop punk fans. For the same reason I just complimented Seaway, I’m going to turn the tables and criticize Neck Deep. Not that it’s the worst thing in the world... but most of the songs on this record bleed of their influences... even down to specific songs. Although I would consider ‘In Bloom’ Neck Deep’s best song ever released, it reminds me an awful lot of of Blink 182′s, 2003 mega hit, I Miss You. There’s some other songs that remind me a hell of a lot of Greenday as well, Parachute specifically. I actually think Neck Deep has an opportunity to surpass bands like Blink, Greenday, Sum etc... and just needs to hit out more original bangers. In my opinion songs like Can’t Kick Up The Roots, Lime St., Serpents and more do this a little better than what we find on the Peace and the Panic. I actually think ‘Motion Sickness’ is one of the best tracks on TP&TP for this reason. It seems like true Neck Deep through and through. But let’s be real... it’s a Neck Deep album so obviously it’s unreal... and like I mentioned... I think it has their best track ever, check it out:

#3 Come Out Your Hiding by Flor

This album was just one that got stuck on repeat for me. Maybe it’s because it’s a pretty new sound for me? or maybe that’s because their isn’t much like it. But Flor puts together an effortless airiness that will just put a smile on your face and some pep in your step. I don’t know what else to say but, these guys are gunna hit it big time... I’m gunna call it now. So check em out b4 they’re cool:

#2 Last Young Renegade by All Time Low

Oh wow it’s been a while since All Time Low would have been on my Top 10 Albums of the Year List... if ever actually. I think the only ones which would have ever made the cut were So Wrong It’s Right & Don’t Panic which both may have been b4 this blogs time. BUT Last Young Renegades is something totally different. They dug deep and combined the classic ATL sound with some super sick 80′s synth and I love it.  I’d say Dirty Laundry is the best song they’ve ever written and Afterglow is easily my favourite song of the year. The play count on that song is through the roof for me. Through in some other mega hits like Drugs & Candy, Life of the Party, Nightmares, Ground Control... I could just name the whole album... and you get what would be a #1 album of the year any other year. This is easily one of my favorite albums of all time and might even be in the conversation for desert Island Album if I had to pick 1. 

#1 Lovely, Little, Lonely by The Maine

Yup you guess it... The Maine takes top spot again... no surprise if you know me. Although I considered giving the top spot to ATL I just couldn’t do it. Between the amount of Mega hits on this album and the shorter interlude songs that tie together the album like a perfect story... I was just too impressed to give this a #2... I recommend giving this beauty a listen from beginning to end because that is where the beauty is.... but if you’re short for time here’s one of my favorite tracks

2017 Top 10 AOTY PART 1

So it’s that time of year again. That time of year when I write down my favourite albums released in the past year. Each and every year I’m usually pretty amazed by how much different my list is from the previous year and this year in no exception! Some of my favorite albums were from genres that I never enjoyed in the past. An album by the band who used to be my absolute favorite didn’t make the list at all which is crazy. I started this blog to watch my transition away from the hardcore genre which I used to listen to exclusively. I’m amazed to see that there isn’t a single album on this list that I would place in that genre today. I’m amazed by how incredible an album can be if you just open your mind and listen to it like you intend to like it. That’s for sure the theme this year. 

That being said their is some of my favourites that you would expect too! More than a few of the artist on this list have been here before.

Anyway let’s get to it.

#10 Brighten by Brighten

Not gunna call this a country album but it’s damn close. With more than a few catchy songs, this album was my go to when I was looking for something a little more relaxed. My favorite song from the album ‘You Love Him” would probably make a 2018 top ten songs list if I were to make one.

# 9 Sunday Brunch by Chapel

Now these guys are fun! A brand new band recently signed to RIse Record right out of the gate, these guys managed to release a banger debut. Not only are the songs killer, Caught Up and Miss Murder to name a few big ones, but the visuals for the entire album are on point! Loving the entire breakfast vibe. Not to mention the ‘she’s in love with someone else’ lyrical content that I may have resonated with just a little bit at the time. 

Anyway check out this incredible video for the some ‘Don’t You Love Me’ which by the way, could possibly be my vote for the video of the year!

#8 Hype by Hoodie Allen 

Yup that’s right... a rap album... never thought I’d see this on here. But Hoodie makes it more then just about dropping rhymes he does some incredible colabs with artist like State Champs (obvi how I found this album) and Goody Grace. Incredible lyrics like “ I wanna see you in my bed each and every morning, even if you got an early meeting with your bosses, I’ll go and make you coffee” just make you want to love this guy. 

Check out my fave from the album: Heartbreak. Not only is this the best song on the album. The lyrics are absolutely hilarious. 

#7 Adornment by Greyscale

Wowza! I’m not used to having such a heavy hitter this early in the list. I remember thinking this album would be in my top 3 or 4 for sure but this year was exceptional for good tunes. All I can say is Greyscale really stepped it up and in my opinion launched themselves into the for front of the Pop Punk genre. Songs like Atlantic, Let it Rain, Mum, If I Ever See You Again BEAUTIFUL THINGS! are all pop punk master pieces. For me... Greyscale mixes in the perfect amount of emo while remaining upbeat, cheerful and optimistic about the future. Adornment would also get my vote for album art of the year! LOVE the visuals. 

It’s to hard to choose a favourite so I’m going to leave you with Beautiful Things, the song that might stand out the most on the album.

#6 Chase Atlantic by Chase Atlantic

Another bit of a curve ball for me... These guys remind me of a mix between the 1975ish alternative rock and the Weeknd R&B style... might seem like a weird combo but it’ll get you grooving that’s for sure. With what seems like hit after hit this album blends an 80′s vibe with the perfect amount of conventional to bring something fresh. 

The stand out track for me is obviously Dancer in The Dark. Check it out:

So it’s been a week or so since Grayscale’s ‘Adorment’ was released and I’m definitely impressed. I was totally into their previous album ‘What We’re Missing’ but they really stepped it up this time around. The album is just stronger from start to finish and actually has better standout songs.

My only complaint. I feel like the 5th song ‘Forever Yours’ feels a little out of place. I would have liked to see some sort of interlude track between it and the 4th song ‘Atlantic’ the shift just seems too drastic for the theme of the record. Or maybe this song could have been put in a different spot in the album... although lyrically I think it fits perfectly in the story of what seems to be the process of graving the abandonment by the vocalists mother.

I also wanted to mention all of the Ireland imagery in this album. Supposidly a lot of the grief in the story of the album takes place in Ireland and it’s reflected in the lyrics more then once.

This Ireland imagery especially resonated with me because lately their has been a lot of talk about Ireland in my own life. My parent’s were away this past week in Ireland while I was listening to this album... funny how things like that happen.  When you think about something and then it’s more noticeable when you see it in other places in your life. When it rains it pours kinda thing I guess.

Anyway.... This is my favorite track on the album. It’s probably one of the saddest ones lyrically but I love the progression of the track and I think it has the best hook on the album.

Oh also one last thing... I didn’t realize how small this band was? Under 9000 likes on FB, under 6000 followers on Spotify... There most popular song only has about 100,000 views on youtube.... Can’t believe it...

I mean It’s not such a bold prediction now because they were just signed to Hopeless Records but I’m telling you they’re gunna blow up for sure...

I always think it’s so funny how songs can become attached to the past and make you think of a memory or a person.

This song needs some context so let me tell you a little bit about my relationship with fall out boy. I've always loved the idea of FOB but definitely could never could consider myself a fan. Maybe it was timing maybe I'm just not that into their vibe idm. I mean I guess I was into some of the hits back in the day when they took what was now my favourite genre mainstream. Songs like sugar were going down and thanks for the memories where pretty hard not to listen to considering how much radio play they got. Either way I always try to give bands a chance and usually will listen to anything at least once. So after reading in the comments section of an All Time Low video that their new sound was nothing new compared to FOB's new song I was curious to see what FOB could possible do that is THAT crazy. So I looked up the song gave it a listen and thought.... well that was fucking weird and moved on. I'm not one to hate on a song. I remember thinking to myself that a lot of people will probably like this and it's cool that they're willing to experiment, but I won't be listening again. A few days have passed since that first listen and this song has popped up in the YouTube auto play a few times. And I have to say after a few listens it's ABSOLUTE FUEGO! So not only for this song but every song you hear I suggest giving it at least 3 listens and keep an open mind. You might just be suprised how good something actually is. Congrats to FOB definitely a cool track ☺

Serious Talk:

Lovely, Little, Lonely might be the best album i’ve ever heard. For a few years now i’ve considered The Maine’s previous album ‘American Candy’ my favorite album ever.

There is two songs in particular that make me hesitate giving American Candy the boot. First, Am I Pretty, which still consider my favorite song by The Maine. Second, My Hair. This song had a really old school vibe that I was hoping would show up again on Lovely, Little Lonely. Unfortunately this style is nowhere to be found on the new record.

That being said... I think Little, Lovely, Lonely is stronger in a lot of ways. I think the whole album gives a better variety of feeling and someone finds a way to make it blend together better. The transition songs on this album are super important when tying together tracks. This is something American Candy doesn't do quite as well. The songs 24 Floors and the title track on American Candy especially seem to come out of nowhere and shift the momentum of the record in a unnatural manor.

That being said... I guess time will tell. Both records are fantastic and there is no need to pick a favorite really... so we’ll see if time will tell. :)
