Finley was born in a small town in Vermont, the daughter of a criminal defense Lawyer and an elementary school teacher. She was raised to be sharp witted, intelligent, hardworking, and curious for better or worse.
Her Father was a prominent Lawyer in Vermont, and vehemently anti-mutant most days. Meanwhile, her Mother worked at a Daycare, and never seemed to hold an ounce of ill will towards anyone. Though Finley never witnessed them fight, she knew it was a point of contention in their relationship.
As a teenager, Finley started to find the entertainment and curiosity in reading through her father’s case files, and sharing the stores like they were tall tales with the other kids at school. She would sneak around him trying to read case files no matter how many times she was told it wasn’t legal.
At 15, her mutation began to present itself, manifesting by accident one day when she was about to be caught, once again, in her dad’s office. Her lock pick and newest case file in hand. She closed her eyes, ready for the yelling, and when she opened them again she was in the kitchen. Her Dad still figured it out fairly quickly, seeing as Finley was the one who had made a habit of breaking into his office.
She started to play with her powers more, keeping them a secret from her family as best as she could. She was amazed at the things that she could do, but she couldn’t risk her family knowing. Her Mom might accept her, but her Dad needed to save face. Not only was he anti-mutant, but he often took on cases to oppose the mutant cause as well. She didn’t dare risk his reaction to finding out his own child was a mutant.
She managed to keep her abilities hidden for 3 years, but on her eighteenth birthday, there had been some big, blowout fight between Finley and her father. They were driving home from some event, the rain heavy, when he lost control of the car. It crashed into a tree, but Finley appeared unscathed a few feet away from the accident, and she still isn’t clear how her abilities activated to get her there.
Finley’s mother died on impact, and her abilities were no longer a secret. Finley’s father turned to drink to cope, blaming Finley for everything that had happened. Had she just been honest, he could have sent her somewhere. Essex, he had heard, was a good place for her kind. But, she was eighteen now. An adult, who could make her own choices. And, as far as he was concerned, she could get out of his house.
Finley had packed up one bag, and was gone the next day, a one way ticket to New York City. She did her best to make it on her own, wanting desperately to find a way to disappear into the crowd. She doesn’t want to be seen or known, she just wants to be able to melt into the background as much as possible.
She’s been in New York six years now, and finally finished school. She’s now working as an archivist in the library, doing her best to keep her powers under wraps from most people, but still trying to get a handle on what they are, exactly.
HEADCANONS/RANDOM FACTS
Finley was a total brainiac as a child. Smart as could be, and personable. Possibly to the point of being disruptive in class. Once she figured out she was a mutant, that behavior wilted away. No one seemed to notice, really.
Finley’s determined to build up to mutant collection in the archives. It was obvious from the minute she took up the job that it had been neglected. It wasn’t even one the public could go through at the time. It’s her silent way of protesting.
Finley’s Mother was a mutant– it’s where she got the gene from, but she has no idea about that, and at this point, no way of finding out. Her Dad didn’t find out until years after Finley was born.
Her curiosity still gets the better of her when she’s in a comfortable situation. She likes to have answers, and she doesn’t mind doing some digging to get them.
