GARY COOPER and JEAN ARTHUR in MR. DEEDS GOES TO TOWN (1936) dir. Frank Capra

Did she care about scars? He knew she already had quite a bit on her hands, but he didnāt know how self-conscious she was about them. However, he knew she would likely be footing the bill for his mistake, so it was difficult to make decisions on her behalf.Ā
āTwentyā¦.dollars?ā He doubted it, but his mind almost rebelled at the idea that it would be some ridiculously high number. Ara was going to hate him for this, if she didnāt already lose all her trust in him due to what had happened.Ā āListen, I donā have much money on me, but Iāll make sure ya get paid sālong as ya help her.āĀ
āReal cute.ā She made a face that said it was anything but.Ā āThousand and I can take it in payments. You any idea how much this shit costs?ā She moved on to another patch of burns, carefully removing residue and debris from where burn fabric and flesh clung together.Ā
āSo what happened here, huh? House fire? Car bomb? Some crazy pyro with a blow torch?āĀ

Kid. Like she didnāt have a cool ten-years over the looks of his face.
Woulda felt better if she also had some height and weight over him that werenāt in the negative-areas. Leastaways he seemed alone, for what that was worth⦠Gag-Arm eyed the pack on him, noting the bearance of a strongarm about him.
Why was it the way it hadda go, zung hai? Canāt let a single work go eggs-in-coffee. Gotta run intā some gudge along the way.
āProd off!ā ( Easy to say from the faraway, ha-a-daisy. )Ā āFlyvverās big ānuff for two, ainātāt?ā
Well. She certainly had a charmingĀ personality.
āAnd scuffle over the good stuff? What ever happened to a little honor among thieves? First come? First serve? ...No?ā When she showed no signs of acknowledging the childish rule, Kale huffed and looked around the wreckage. ā āKay. Halfsies it is. You wanna split it top-bottom or back-front?āĀ

Flynn watched nervously as the other woman worked. She seemed to know what she were doingāas far as he could tell. Despite the fact that both his parents were in the medical profession, he knew so little. But he could heal. Heād had no use for first aid or anything or the like since heād been old enough to speak. If Ara had only let him help, the injuries would have been mended in mere seconds.Ā
āWhat? No!ā It took him a moment to realize she must not know what Ara could do. If she were ignorant to the supernatural world, his panicked mumbling likely made him sound like he had been tripping on something.Ā
āNo, no. Jusā worried about her, is all.ā His eyes shot toward his sister, looking far more frail and pale than he had ever seen before. Had he really done that?Ā āAre you gonna be able to help her?āĀ
āYeah, sheāll be good. Iāve seen worse.ā She started the cleaning process. The burns didnāt appear to have too much in the way of debris which was good. Less chance of infection. Less messy. She was clinical and methodical in her work.Ā
Assured that he was in his right mind (distress aside), she got down to business.Ā āShe care about scars? I can do some patchwork here, but itāll cost. Weāre starting at 20. Thatās a discount, mind. Donāt take it personalĀ ā Iāve got a soft spot for the kid, but I aināt running no charity.ā
amongstmortalsā:
āI didnāt-I didnāt mean to.ā He glanced down at the small bundle within his arms, blazing eyes gazing at Ara with dejection before filling to the brim with tears. The long shock of red hair hanging over his arms was wildly tangled, and the girlās frame shivered delicately in his hold. He had no doubt she was still enduring large amounts of pain; the acrid smell rising from her charred skin hinted at the third degree burns he was certain she must have received. The phoenix could still hear his sisterās screams of pain as she had fallen to the floor, too incoherent to do more than shout a warning for him to stay away from her hands.
āShe wonā lemme heal herāā His voice was broken, smoke still curling from the pairās singed clothing as his emotions continued to spiral out of control, forcing the heat of his skin to climb ever higher. āI-I lost control and I didnāt know where else to take her. Please-Please helpāshe wonā lemme me heal her.ā
In Aldaās line of work, it was mostly fixing dislocations, setting bones, digging out bullets, and stitching up knife cuts - with the occasional infection or illness to spice it up. It was unpleasant surprise to have some stranger come bursting into her one-room-clinic with a trembling girl all too familiar covered in burns.Ā
She dropped what she was doing and rushed over to her operating table.Ā āGet her here.ā Her tone was sharp and urgent. While he lay her one the table, she grabbed a clean needle, loaded it up with the hydromorphone, and coming back over made short work of slapping a vein on the unburned arm and injecting the narcotic to start easing that pain. Cleaning out those burns wasnāt gonna to be pretty.Ā
āWhatād you get yourself into this time, babygirl?ā She wasnāt really expecting an answer. Her eyes turned to the boy present.
āYou on something?ā It was hard to tell if he was talking nonsense from distress or something messing with the head. Either way, she meant to get started on those burns while he calmed down enough to talk expenses. Skin grafting didnāt come cheap and she was no charity.

Ara offered the other man an indulgent smile as he left the room, hardly resisting the urge to give him a wave as well.Ā
Good riddance.Ā
āRight. Henry and Iā¦didnāt exactly part on the best terms. Itās why I asked about him when we first met.ā Although she appreciated the fact that Kale hadnāt spread the word about who she was, she hated that she been tied to her father in his eyes. Even if he believed she was a victim as well, heād only become entangled in everything because she was a Rowan.Ā
āItāsā¦itās a long story. It all sort of sounds like a crazy melodrama.ā Ara pinched the bridge of her nose. Explaining with words seemed like a challenge she wasnāt quite up to meeting. And if heād kept her secrets so farā¦Ā
āBecause my father wanted me dead. If you hold your hand out, it might be easier for me to explain.āĀ
In his experience, most familyās issues fell into either sitcom or melodrama territory when all laid out in the open. What he knew so far about the crazy shit going on with herĀ family? Now that was outright telenovella.Ā
He held out his hand when she asked, open palmed for whatever she wanted to give him to explain it all.Ā

Mari was starting to fidget after several moments of silence.Ā It seemed to drag on forever.Ā Her leg started to bounce without her thinking about it.Ā She even clutched harder at the puzzle book the man had lent her with her good hand.Ā At least she couldnāt tap the pen, though.Ā She perked up when he seemed to dig around for something else.Ā A phone, it turned out.Ā Ā
She didnāt bother trying to hide that she was listening in.Ā Hell, she even leaned towards him.Ā She was disappointed when she couldnāt hear whoever he had called, though.Ā She definitely heard him call herĀ āsome kid,ā though.Ā Ā
Irritated, Mari leaned back away from him.Ā She pushed his puzzle book towards him, scowling.Ā Ā āI can sprint,ā she muttered.Ā She wasnāt sure how far sheād get right then, but she could sprint for a bit.Ā She should be recovered enough to get somewhere without passing out.Ā Ā āClimbing is the problem Iād have right now.ā
He took the book and tucked it back in his bag. Whatever attitude she may have towards him, it was equal parts self-preservation and good samaritan that had him determinedĀ to get her out of this alive.Ā
āYouāve still got one good arm, right? Think you can manage a tree if I give you a boost?ā

Over do it? Ara scowled. He might have his own way of operating, but she knew men were simple. They would hardly blink an eye at her if she were just another pretty little airhead. If they thought she was trying to outsmart them, there would be hell to pay.
It was the only reason she held her tongue as they were escorted to the elevator. She tried to keep her composure in her embarrassment, letting her āhusbandā do the talking. At least it would be easy enough to escape from the cargo hold.
Melinda? She wrinkled her nose at the name, though she supposed she couldnāt be too ungrateful for the new identity she had been giving. And it was a small blessing that the other woman was from earth as well. Ara wasnāt exactly as cultured as she would care to be.
She opened her mouth to respond just as the doors to the elevator began to glide open. She gave a haughty sniffle before offering the other a rather bitter smile. She hoped he would be leading her back to their room. She didnāt appreciate having to be reliant on a stranger, nor did she want to have to be thrown into the fray without so little information.
But if he were offering her a way to get through the trip undetected, there wasnāt much more she could do than follow his directives.
āAre we heading to bed, dear? Iām getting tired.āĀ
āSoon, soon, ma chĆ©ri,ā he gave her an affectionate pat on the hand. His Southern Martian accent was passable. Heād fabricated a story about being born and raised near the border to dismiss the tones of the North that slipped in. His French was likewise passableĀ as long as no one actively tried to strike up a conversation of any depth with him. Having hisĀ āwifeā there would help. An easy excuse to speak the Trade Language instead. She was learning French, but still far from fully fluent. (and by saying this, he could avoid his own ineptitude being exposed)Ā
An elderly man with an equally aged woman on his arm passed by them in the hall. The woman brightened when she sawĀ āMelindaā at his side.Ā
āMrs. Sykora! So glad to see you are feeling better. It would be such a shame to miss the whole cruise.āĀ
As naturally as if heād known her forĀ yearsĀ rather than minutes, Kale introduced,Ā āMel, this is Mr. and Mrs. Gadhavi.ā He would rather avoid the chit chat altogether, but heād been friendly with the other passengers so-far. Suddenly turning a cold shoulder would be strange behavior and he wanted to avoidĀ strange behavior.
