The Cat's Tails: Mistaken Identity

It started when Nic Marker mistook me for a stray one brisk winter morning.

I suppose it was inevitable. A cat, dozing on a park bench, with no collar on and an old newspaper draped over my back thanks to the old man that sometimes joined me. The park was unusually quiet, so I foolishly decided to take a nice long catnap before my shift at the library started.

And then he came along.

I was rudely awakened as someone started cooing at me and making kissy noises, saying something that went by so fast that my still-dozing brain just could not comprehend. And then my newspaper blanket was sliding off my back and my paws were leaving the bench, and in a panic I morphed back into my human form.

At least he had the decency to look embarrassed while I stood there in a defensive position, hissing at him with my ears pointed back.

“What the <i>fuck</i>, man?” I spat. “Can’t you let a guy alone?”

He put up his hands in surrender. “Woah, chill! I didn’t realize you were a Shifter! I thought you were a stray!”

“Who goes around picking up random stray cats on park benches?!”

“...I mean, I did.”

“Yes, you did.” I growled. “I was just getting comfy, too.”

“Sorry,” He said. “Uh. I’ll just–yeah, I’ll just go. Have a decent rest of your day?”

He turned and fled, and I watched with narrow eyes as he left, before turning to head back to campus myself.

This was the reason that even though I’m a student at Creedence City University, I never attempted to sleep outside on campus. Too many people coming by to interrupt a peaceful morning. I just knew I would be in a bad mood the rest of the day. And I was, but that’s neither here nor there, because I didn’t see the pain-in-the-Nic again the rest of t he day.

Unfortunately, I had to deal with his brother. Of course I didn’t know it at the time, but I found out soon enough.

Newt is like me. Loves books, hates people. He was the only decent person in our shared English classes. We had a few good chats about light novels when the university library wasn’t as crowded as usual. 

Then he brought his brother along to one of our meet-ups.

I did not know he had a brother. Much less a twin. That twin being one Nicote A. Marker. 

His name should have been a giveaway. In the ancestral language of the Huelves and Faelves, “nicote’ was the literal translation of “be shadow”. “Marker” is the word for a sign of any sort. His name literally was a clue from the heavens that I should turn tail and run right back under my bed and not emerge for the next five years.

It would have saved me so much trouble.

But I did not head the warnings, and thus began my greatest misfortune: being forced to share company with the Marker Twins.

Newt Marker's note: It was more like he pretended he was a cat for three months and we found out he was actually a student when he got spooked by Nic teleporting next to him one evening. Would've been way funnier if he'd turned on the spot honestly....

Just for the record, Newtmore and Nicote Marker are lying, scheming, cheating, criminal masterminds who should never be trusted. They will kidnap you from your dorm room at too-early-o’clock, and then talk at you until you’re getting on a bus with six other people, and then an hour later you’re freefalling from the sky while they laugh at your misery. Nicote will probably pull out a camera and Newt will already have his notebook out and they’ll be doing scientific research on whether cat shifter can, in fact, land on their feet. The answer is yes, by the way. I could’ve told them that if they’d just asked like normal people.

But they’ll bribe you with grilled fish, and I am a weak man who forgives far too easily just because Amalie Alanor is the greatest chef alive and knows exactly how to season without overstimulating the senses. 

True story, by the way. Of course I ate the damn fish. I needed comfort food after that traumatizing experience.

Nicote Marker’s Note: Skydiving. We took him skydiving. It was Mateo’s birthday, and Arbenshu said he’d claw Mat’s eye out if he forgot to invite him. He could’ve stayed on the ground with Livvvy…..the camera-notebook bit is true though.

well technically there's seven but the faelf shifters insisted.

fun fact: because genetics, you can have one parent be one race and the other be a different one, and you can end up with mixed features! But some races are a little more dominant in the genetics then others so you'll only ever pass down one race's traits. Usually. There are a few exceptions (example, the Cresthearse family, though Flotails and Faelf Shifters, is filled with blonds which is normally a trait found among huelves), but generally genetic tend to follow this rule. So yes that Mer over there can in fact have an Eldwarf mother.

I'll expand more on each later.

Listed in order of genetic dominance.

Huelf

-kinda pointy ears, pointier the ear the "truer" a Huelf. Somewhat pointed eyes. -moderately shorter (average is around 5'5" in Earth terms) -very "dignified", very "classy", very traditional. -Aligned to Water with those from the Four Great Tribes. -close relations with the Faelves. -Preferences to dragges and knives, though some use bows or just elements. -clan system - huelves tend to hold loyalties to their extended family line, or clan. There's a whole system with that but it's a bit of a headache. All you need to know is: the higher the class, the more expectation.

Faelf

-Pointed ears, green skin, same eyes as the Huelves. Slgihtly taller - average height is 5'7" -Instead of water, affinities for herbalism. -preferences towards bow usage. -more "pacifist" generally, their lot was not as hungry for war as the Huelves' clans. They also have the clan system, but tend to be less fixated on it. -when they do decide to pick a fight though, expect shrewdness and stealth. Many folklegends revolve around Faelves.

Eldwarf

-cohort system - family units essentially. Nowhere near as rigid as Huelves and Faelfs. -5'2 if from the Mountain cohorts, 5'8" if from the Plains cohorts -stocky build. Very stocky. Like an orc almost -many go into industry or mechanics. -six toes five fingers. -mountains have a more gray tint to their skin and plains have a more sunburnt appearance. -very hardy. Some become mercenaries in the ever-warring South.

Pipelix

-average heigh 5'10", antlers like a male deer's but on all. They start as nubs and grow into large branchlike things. They don't grow back if chopped at the root. -hosts of many famous bards and musicians. -native to the Western Countries

Hupie

-very short, like 5'0" short. -often very colorful (natural hair strands and hetrochrondria) -braids! (fine they look a little Asian) -little bit of pointy ears -also some have wings it's about 30% kinda recessive trait

Mer

-oceanic race, any height really but many will have small fins or gray/blue tinted skin. Hetrochondria is not uncommon, and large wide-spaced eyes are also common. -always colorful hair usually some mixture of shades. ALl colors -also host to many musicians but also atheltes and oceanfareres, often run trade routes

Faelf Shifters

-like Faelfs except their skin color reflects an animal they can shift into. -Requires two Faelf parents.

Flotail

-multi-tailed people, what happened after years upon years of Faelves and Pipelixen mixing in the Western Countries. -average height varies, usually 5'6"-5'8" -Known for the Elemental Arts -their names often have hard sounds (especially C and K noises)

Quick Bio: A girl hailing from Creedence. and blessed with being raised on the "good" side of town. Has a younger brother. Comes from a long line of bards and artists.

A spunky firecracker of a rebel-in-the-making, it's little wonder to those that know her of how she ended up briefly dating the "black sheep" of the Marker clan during her younger years, or why the majority of students at Peral River Academy found her so intriguing. Her free spirit is what drives her to a life of exploration, and in her eyes, as long as she always has a tune in her head and a good pair of shoes she'll never lose her way.

On a very unrelated note, she once got lost while attempting to go to the city theatre.

Notes:

Jade's closest confident is Khone Vell, who shares a love of music.

She owns a pet rabbit she named Turtle.

Like her namesake, she enjoys to look of jade and often wear jewelry with jade embellishments.

Occupation: Grocery store clerk, street musician, student at Creedence City University

Quick Bio: A rarity among those born in Creedence, she grew up an only child. Her love of music began after hearing street musicians playing on street cornerand in The Dog's Head Tavern, and during her secondary school years purchased a small guitar of her own.

A defiant spirit, she's very persistent that with enough dedication she can make her dreams a reality no matter how outlandish they might seem. She's very unafraid of consequences, such as the time she risked the wraith of the Marker clan when her friend and neighbor Jade attempted dating one of the family's sons and she ventured to state her unsavory opinions on the matter in no uncertain terms. Were it not for the clan's head ignoring much of the happenings of the boy's life and the boy himself rather unbothered by the remarks, there would have been a real possibility of greater consequence. Oddly enough Khone's suspicions proved correct, and the friend and the boy quickly broke up less then a year later. This however is not the only near miss Khone has gotten herself into, though instead of questionable relationship choices she has turned her mind to activism. Not much less danger, considering who the main culprit of her campaigning is, though...

She often frequents the only music store whose goods are proctored somewhat legally, and is often seen at the community outdoor theatre during good weather, in between her shifts at one of the local groceries and her studies of course.

Notes:

She finds little interest in books, but tolerates them when they concern her true passion of music.

She occasionally sneaks activism phrases and themes into her ballades. She was told off once after a rather blatant one involving a dragon and a jester.

She finds hupie fashion to be superior to huelf fashion, partly because of the elaborate skirts that huelf girls have become rather fixated on as of late. She instead finds them cumbersome and impractical, and is adamant that such clothing is most definitely of lower quality when made away from the Homelands.

The onloy real sign that she isn't a Huelf besides her slightly shorter build is her lack of pointed ears. She often covers them with her hair as they are a point of sore discussion.

fin's terrarine: the Dreamchasers (Le Sanofeh-Rachenz)

Fun fact: I somehow didn't have any notes on what "dream" or "chase' was in Alluiki, evne though I'm very certain i had it down somewhere at some point so yeah anyways this language just got two new words and some additional lore about different time periods or whatever. I'm gonna need a bigger doc.

The Dreamcasers, or Le Sanofehnz-Rachenz (pronounced exactly how it's spelled (sah-noh-feh Rah-chensh) ) are a group of erm. We'll call them "lvoely individuals" who took the saying "the path of knowledge is one that takes an adventurous soul" and got a bit too carried away. They are a group that emerged after the incident that turned Altonaux into a desert land.

They originally began as independent researchers looking to investigate into the circumstances that caused the Great Disasters. Over time, their ideas became more and more radical, until their thrist for knowledge overrode the reason. They are behind many kidnappings in places such as Bildernia, but even as far as the Western Lands. Some who are kidnapped join their ranks and others sucumb to the many inhumane circumstances. Basically, in Earthian terms: they are what happens if the SCP Foundation had a baby and they hired conspiracy theorists as babysitters. That's probably the best way to describe i at any rate.

It is known that one of their current plans involve creating substances that could cure any illness with justa touch, similar to an ability held by one of the twelve who rescue the Lovers. The young man's Gift had been rather versatile in nature, able to heal small cuts with a touch and a focus of energy and larger wounds if given time and given that he had the energy to spare. While the exact "progress" towards a recreation of this ability is unknown, they haven't achieved it quite yet and two Bildernians who were kidnapped were recovered possessing unnatural abilities that originated from their time imprisoned. Ironically, the two (who are brothers) have a brother who studied elemental theory as a student, though with far less eccentric ideology.

Other projects have included the growth of wings or horns, and in one case, a failed attempt to create a Shifter that went very horribly wrong.

Their language is a dialect of Alluiki that they believe is the "true" form of the language, an altered form that alters words and phrasing so it is almost unintelligble to the original language due to it being made to be as simillar to the original language as possible. Words that came into existance in the past 500 years are altered, not used at all, or changed entirely to "fit" the old model of the language.

It's popular for parents in some countries to convince their children to do things by saying "the Dreamchasers will kidnap you". In Bildernia, it is much more of a threat and many are more fraid to criticize them for fear of what might happen to them or their loved ones so it is not quite as common, especially the closer you are to the border.

Huelves

Huelf - [hoo-elph] - the dominant race of Bildernia and the Southern Water Tribe. Found worldwide. High affinity for the Liquid Element.

Huelves can be identified by their pointed ears,  rounded eyes, and a shorter build compared to their closest relatives and historical allies, the Faelves. Many Faelf families still reside near or in the Homelands of the Southern Tribe.

Social

Huelves have historically followed a strict hierarchy, with family systems called “clans”. The larger the clan, the more power it holds. Many lineages were wiped out during the Sunburn, and since the 1200s, clan size has severely decreased, adopting small single-family sizes. Today, a few highly-influential clans still exist, such as the Markers, the Stones, and the Flora, and many still refer to their families as their “clan”. 

The Hierarchy is not often discussed, but is so deeply ingrained into the fabric of Huelf culture and being that most Huelves, particularly those from traditional household, will seem to understand the social customs instinctively.

Affinities

Huelves are known to take pride in their swordplay and archery, though rarely with longbows.  However, many prefer the usage of their Elemental Arts, or if a weapon is needed, a short dagger. Since the 1200s, a decrease in a desire to prepare as if for war has  been noted, though in the Southern Water Tribe’s homelands one can still find many youths who enjoy both recreational and nonrecreational weaponry practices. 

In terms of Element, over 80% that are born in the Southern Water Tribe are Aligned with Liquid, with every 1 in 500 gaining a Gift and many becoming highly-skilled Elemental Users. Five Masters head the Council, the tribe’s governing body. All who are born into the Homelands will find that they are Blessed with certain affinities, being able to read the currents and sail the seas with more ease then any other person. This Blessing leaves a person when they permanently Leave the Homelands, though if they ever return there is a chance to regain those powers. Elemental Alignment and Gifts do not change.

The Huelves are additionally more susceptible to heat, having originated from colder climates. Protection against a hot summer day is near mandatory procedure for any Huelf living in the greater world.

In the greater world, Alignment to Water is still higher then on average, but not quite as drastically as in the Southern Tribe. Gift rates are still present, however. 

Fashion

They are known, particularly traditionalists, to wear blues, purples, and white, with cuffs and hems lined with lace. Large coats and high boots are also common fashion statements. In more recent times, the addition of jewelry in the form of necklaces, bracelets, and earrings have become prevalent, particularly among younger generations. Earrings are generally worn in one ear, and all pieces of jewelry contains a single gemstone, usually of amethyst or aquamarine but have been seen in jade. 

High scholars and a more formal attire is preferred by those in high-class society as historically, those in high places were often members of the military.

Quick Bio: The "forgotten" youngest daughter of the central Marker line. After a somewhat unstable childhood filled with constant motion, a serious lack of parental figures, and some preteen rebellion, she now lives with her eldest brother above his hardware shop.

A rather excitable girl, Zena isn't quite the model student many of her students were, but where she lacks in academics she makes up for in empathy. She's the one most likely to remember your birthday, plan you a surprise party, and find you the best cake in town. She's also the most petty, and may have been behind a few incidents....alright, she's a bit of a problem kid but she'll figure it out. Probably.

Notes:

Love cute things but often won't admit it.

Her best friends are Luna Lilybud and Jon Powell. The former she's been friends with for years, the latter is a cousin whp somehow got roped into her friendgroup.

Is banned from the nearest bakery without supervision.

Headline: Popular Bakery Closed Temporarily Due to Pinerose Invasion

The popular Sweetflower Bakery on Main Street has been temporarily closed due to a pinerose invasion.

The owners, the Flicke family, say that the bakery will reopen by next week once the Commission gives the all-clear.

The incident was caused by a "mystery treat" promotion that the bakery's staff had thought up a few days before the incident Treats included puff rolls, cream tarts, sugar biscuits, and other popular menu items. Customers would purchase a "mystery box", inside which one or two treats could be found. Up until this afternoon, the sale had been going well.

"There are of course no pineroses in any of our food," head baker Carmi Flicke told the News. "The only person who had authorization to pack the boxes was my assistant, since some of our own workers liked the mystery as well and didn't want to be spoiled. Also...some of them are very bad at lying and we didn't want to give anything away. If they didn't know, they could buy them themselves and not have someone specifically picking out boxes, to keep it fair and fun. Well, our assistant had to babysit her little sister and brought her along and along the way....well, we do extend our greatest apologies to Mr. Marker for the bugs in his mystery box."

Mr. Altado Marker, who runs the local handyman shop, says he harbors no ill will towards the bakery as no one was harmed and he "quite enjoy the baked goods I pick up for breakfast nearly every day". A new rule about nonworkers being in the backrooms unsupervised has been put into place in the meantime.

Quick Bio: A child of the forest, a high-achiever in everything in a futile attempt to please his elders, and a love of fueling chaos. Namely, the chaos caused by having the socially awkward Meinke Kilplolar-Xandori and the extroverted cautiousness of the ambitious Lishian Allen in the same room for extended periods of time.

He tends to follow the flow, but his quips and his ability to actually do calculaations are welcomed by his friends.

Notes:

Pretends he can understand Old Eastern. He actually only knows a couple of words, but no one needs to know that. No one speaks it anywyas.

Has considered switching his studies from Elementics to Botanical Sciences. Has not gained the courage to admit he's not interested in the elements to his elders.

Occupation: Fashion Designer

Quick Bio: A budding designer fresh out of the big city's best schools. Leaving her older brother to handle affairs, Mina decided to follow her mother's footsteps and engage herself in high society, with all the dinner parties, fashion shows, and fine dining. Also including the inability to find a "genuine guy".

She kept as much tabs on her family as the average high-class young adult is expected to in the modern times, which is to say she was well aware of her older brother (and heir to the family), vaguely aware of one of her younger brothers, and was extremely surprised to learn that there were three more siblings hanging around. She learned this after visiting her eldest brother and meeting her youngest sister for the first time.

It's probably fine. After all, she's got a packed schedule for the next three months leading up to Lovelake Fashion Week. She can deal with messy family affairs later. Probably.

Notes:

She loves peaches, and always orders peach-flavored deserts at cafes.

Her least favorite modeling job is having to pose with animals. She finds they move around unexpectedly too much, and she's a bit scared of them, if she's being honest....

She's been on 53 dates with 14 different guys.
