What are some unique and unconventional ingredients you like to put in your spells?

Hi!!!! My first anon ask!

I honestly don’t know; I like to put a lot of things in my spells… but I guess the most interesting thing I put in them would be paint!

I really like paint. Watercolor and acrylic paints are my faves to put in spells!!

If I’m doing art magic specifically, and I want to paint the spell; I typically use acrylic paints… every now and then I use guache(?) the thicker watercolor paints. But acrylics are the ones that I’m most familiar with!!

Oh!!!!! Also, home made clay! Clay made from the dirt of my yard; that’s also a very fun thing I do.. but yea! Those are some of the “unconventional” things I put in spells!

Herbs and their uses/random information!

Hello!!! Sorry for the lack of content—but I’m back! It’s me, the one and only finthetin! Haha; anyways… I have come bearing the gift of random information!

These are some herbs that I like to use in my craft whenever possible! I’m also going to add that this is not an all encompassing list, and this list will be broken into multiple parts! We are starting with the letter B; because I love Bees!! 🐝

Basil:

Basil is in the same family as mint, rosemary, and lavender. Did you know that there are over 60 species of basil? The two “main” species are Thai and Sweet Basil, with Sweet Basil being the more common out of the two.

Basil has had a mixed reputation throughout history! In the Victorian Language of Flowers, it symbolizes hatred. To the ancient Greeks, it represented mourning and was even called sileus phuton(?) which translates to “kingly herb.” In medieval times, Basil was even more convoluted in meanings! Some claimed it could cure scorpion bites, and others thought that it was actually poisonous! At various other points in history, it was called a “devil’s plant,” but, it’s still associated with Scorpio and Scorpions to this day!

This plant is likely native to Asia and Africa. Basil flowers are typically white!

Bergamot:

This is also known as Bee Balm, High Balm, Low Balm, mountain balm, Oswego tea, horsemint, wild bergamot, and mountain mint!

This plant is native to North America.

You can make a drink with this plant! Did you know, that the Oswego tribe made a drink with the red variety of Bergamot (Monarda didyma)! And when the colonists boycotted British tea, they turned to the bergamot drink made by the native people as an alternative. Speaking of, the Iroquois and Tewa tribes also valued the herbaceous plant; but correct me if I’m wrong!!

This plant also symbolizes good health, protection from illness, and prosperity!

Borage:

In the Victorian Language of Flowers, Borage stands for bluntness. This plant is native to the Mediterranean; and it is a self-seeding annual plant! This is also known as bee bread, or star flower (sometimes written as starflower), and Bugloss is also a common name. The star shaped flowers are a sky blue and hang in drooping clusters; the leaves are a grayish-green! If you like cucumbers, you might like this plant too!! It has the smell and taste reminiscent to that of a cucumber.

Both the leaves and stalks have a bristly fuzz that helps shield them from insects.

Borage stems can replace celery in potato salad; and the flowers can make an attractive edible garnish! You can make iced Borage tea, with lemon juice and honey—that’s very refreshing on warm sunny days!!

Borage will also attract bees to your garden!

Calendula:

Calendula is a member of the same family as the Daisy!! It’s native to the Mediterranean, Europe, and Egypt; and is also known as pot marigold, garden marigold, holligold, goldbloom, and/or Mary Bud!

The majority of the 15–20 species of Calendulas are called Marigolds.

In some warmer climates, it grows just about every month of the calendar year! This long growing season could’ve potentially given it its name.

The name Marigold is also thought to be in relation to the Feast of the Annunciation of Mary, welcoming spring—hence the name, Mary’s gold. Though!! It’s super important to note, that while these plants are commonly called Marigolds, they aren’t the same as the ones found in the gardens, which are part of the genus Tagetes!!

While Calendulas are edible, with a mild peppery taste; other Tagetes species should be avoided—unpleasantly bitter to taste at best, and toxic at worst!!

Calendula flowers are yellow or orange, and open in the daytime and close at night.

Ancient Roman authors such as Virgil and Pliny both mentioned this beautiful plant in their writings!

In India, this plant has even become a symbol of thankfulness and serenity!

Caraway:

This was actually used in love potions; and was thought to protect things, as well as children, from getting lost!!

Caraway is a member of the Parsley family! It’s also known as Persian/Roman/Wild cumin, meridian fennel, and siya jeera! Known for its licorice like flavor, it’s native to North Africa, Asia, and Europe.

Although it’s generally cultivated for the seeds, it also has edible roots and leaves!

And, it’s also mentioned in The Forme or Cury, which is thought to have been compiled by the head chefs of Richard II, alongside nutmeg, cardamom and ginger!

An idea for an offering!

Hello!! Hope all is well with you, I have an idea for an offering that just about anyone can do! This works for all deities of any pantheon, even for multiple pantheons!

You can make a little trifold or brochure with information about them, their correspondences, consorts (if any)—make it as personal as possible! Put how they’ve helped you so far, or what you would like to learn from them, put in a recipe that reminds you of them—anything goes!

Yes, I did use a digital software; I used Canva specifically. I think this came out wonderfully though! I felt the need and desire to do something new in terms of offerings, and this is what my brain came up with!!

hi if it's not invasive or rude, do you think you could give a little insight on your craft?

like how did you get into your practice and what exactly do you do?

do you have any tips you'd give to a younger person interested but unsure where to start?

Hi! This is not invasive or rude at all; in fact I love this question!!

How I got into my craft was by wanting to be in it! I am a firm believer in the fact that you do not need to be born into a lineage of witches to be a witch/diviner/warlock/whatever! You just have to be willing to work at it.

What I do exactly is constantly changing and evolving! What I did a month ago versus what I do now has differed slightly, and what a did a year ago versus now is pretty drastic in terms of evolution! So, you can imagine what a solid 11 years to now, how much change and growth has happened!!

But, enough of me tooting my horn; what I do now is pretty much the things I’m going to list below:

—Jotting down abnormal feelings I have throughout the day, what the date is, as well as day of the week!

*I don’t personally use my book of shadows for this, I typically use scrap paper/regular notebooks or sketchbooks (especially if the art I made was emotionally charged)!!

**At the end of the day, or beginning of the next day; I’ll reflect on the day itself. First I’ll see if there were any mundane things that might’ve caused the feeling, then I’ll move on to the celestial/planetary aspects and see where everything is floating around!!

—Make food. A lot of food. Food is pretty much an essential component in my craft, I call it my edible spells!

*Coming from an Italian and Polish household; food means “I love you,” pretty much!!

**Any meal I make, I’ll use seasonings, herbs—anything that corresponds to the desired outcome I want/need to have happen.

***When cooking an edible spell for others, I typically do a tarot reading for them prior to choosing the kind of meal I make them!

—Any kind of intentional art! I’m talking drawings, paintings, paper crafts—anything! Especially if it’s something I have not tried before!!

*I’ve recently started making paper flower cutouts! With Spring here, it’s been very fun!!

**Intentional art is hardly ever what would be objectively “good art”! This should be personal art, maybe even for a deity that you work with/want to work with!

The tips I’d give a younger person who’s interested in the craft and is unsure where to start would be look around yourself! Try to get inspiration/ideas from what is around you right now. What kind of trees are native to your area? What kind of birds are around right now? Bugs? Arachnids? Flowers? Even the kind of grass/moss can be utilized in some way!!

There’s no right way to start your craft, but I’d say a good 75% of starting is to want to do it.

And, obviously if this is a safe thing to do in your community, ask questions! The safest place to do this might actually be online in specific spaces, but it’d be really cool/helpful I think if you were able to ask in person!! Maybe, if you’re in school; you can either start/join a club (if this is a safe option)!!

Get your pen and paper, and start.

Pride Month 2025?

Hello everybody who is in support of the LGBTQ+ community! How are you all doing today? I hope that you are all doing well! So, this is a little bit of a different post; meaning that it is not specifically about witchcraft or sigil making or anything like that… But it is about another community that I, myself, am in and that many other people are in as well—the LGBTQ+ community. It is understood that the American LGBTQ+ community is in dire need of aid. With the current president, things have taken a huge turn for the worst.

I read an article by Jo Yurcaba, a journalist for NBC Out on how the Federal Agency has axed an LGBTQ+ festival’s funding because the festival does not align with Donald Trump’s priorities.

The festival in question is the Criminal Queerness Festival, which is ran by The National Queer Theater and is based in Brooklyn. Back in December of 2024, the theater had received, for the third year in a row, a $20,000.00 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). This grant makes up a good 20% of the theater’s budget, and the NEA recently emailed the theater to let them know that they’ll be taking back the grant.

This came after new policy changes and after old leadership within the NEA stepping down. The policy changes are now aligned with (as per the NEA) the reflection of the country’s “rich artistic heritage and creativity as prioritized by the President.”

The email then went on to state what it now will prioritize for giving grants to as projects that “elevate the Nation’s HBCUs and Hispanic Serving Institutions, celebrate the 250th anniversary of American independence, foster AI competency, empower houses of worship to serve communities, assist with disaster recovery, foster skilled trade jobs, make America healthy again, support the military and veterans, support Tribal communities, make the District of Columbia safe and beautiful, and support the economic development of Asian American communities.”

But there is a GoFundMe for the theater to accumulate the funds for the production that is scheduled for 06/11–06/28/2025.

I’m saying all of this because, as a person in the LGBTQ+ community myself, I do not ever want to see the day that me, or my family, or my friends, cannot be represented in the entire continent of North America. I want—I need this country to be a safer place for the most important person in my life, who is my little cousin; to freely express herself however she sees it fit.

I am by no means saying that you need to donate if you do not have the funds to do so; but rebloging this is completely free. It costs you nothing; and I mean nothing.

I know this particular instance may seem a little on the smaller side; but the Trump administration has axed more than $125M for our health funding research, the Supreme Court has also allowed Donald Trump to implement a transgender military ban—there’s just so much happening; and none of it is good.

This instance is one where I think we as a community on Tumblr can agree that we can help with right now. Please reblog and spread the word.

Sigil making 101!

Hello, I hope everyone who reads this post is well! My name is Fin, I am a 21-year-old eclectic witch that focuses on things such as reading tarot, spell crafting, and of course; sigil making!

I’m making this post to go over some pretty basic guidelines as well as some “how-to’s” when it comes to crafting your very own sigil! But what exactly is a sigil?

A sigil, in my own definition is a spell/ward done through a picture! It is a visual representation and reminder of your intentions and goals.

Like all pictures, no one is going to see your sigil the same as yourself! That’s the beauty of this. No matter how you create your sigil, no matter who sees your sigil, this is something that is 100% tailored to you and your magic!

Now, these can be created in a ton of different ways! The main three I’m going to demonstrate will be the alphanumeric system, the witch’s circle, and (my all time favorite) freestyle!

For the alphanumeric system you’re going to write out the purpose of your sigil. Keep it simple for your first one, meaning not a full sentence, and one word is perfectly fine!

For this, I’m using the phrase “clear mind.”

Once you have that written down, it’s a frequent practice to omit the vowels. So you’d then be left with “clrmnd”

Horizontally, write the numbers 1 to 9, then beneath that; write put the alphabet so each letter is under one number. You will not have 3 even rows, the last one will be shorter than the rest.

When you’re done, look for the letters on the chart; then write down the numbers they correspond with. You should have the following numbers: 33454

Perfect! Now, draw a circle. Randomly place the numbers one through nine all around the circle. Starting from the number three, draw a line that connects to the other numbers.

The witch's wheel, the witch’s circle (as I remember it best), or the alphabet circle is another one of the methods used to create sigils. This one is a little easier to explain visually, so I’m going to add a photo of the wheel! But, you can arrange the letters in different places than what this wheel has, that’s perfectly acceptable.

Freestyle:

If you want, you can do anything with your sigil creation process! In a few minutes, I’ll edit this post to show you how ornate, or simplistic a freestyle sigil can be! I also have another post in the works that details different meanings for the kinds of lines that you could use, and different symbols to create with!
