Can you imagine being stuck in space completely alone with only the corpses of your friends for company, and the first living thing you meet after 46 years of that misery is a fucking weird alien creature who just rolls up with crazy advanced tech and goes "hi let's work together" and makes it possible for you to save your world through the power of friendship and molecular biology. AND THEN you find out that in this creature's language, its name means "mercy". Happened to my good friend Rocky btw

Maomao stops sampling toxins and doing self-harming medical experiments on her body because "poison" is a metaphor. The word "doku" (毒) also refers to venom and toxicants, and can be used for spite, malice, and abusive language.

The way her interests start to focus more on medicines and drugs over toxins and poisons is character development. It's an extension of her blooming benevolence, both in compassion for other people, and for the acceptance of her own self-worth.

I love the freaky, self-destructive, self-debasing early version of Maomao we see in Seasons 1&2 as well! But even some folks fully caught up with the light novels seem to miss this.
