The writers clearly wanted merthur to be canon but due to the studio wanting Arthur to stay forcefully in the bisexual closet( like a certain Dean Winchester)and tease the fans but actually not follow through due to studio pressure. I will call it queer coding I hate the term queerbaiting because it feels disgusting and disrespectful to the writers who wanted Merthur as badly as us.
It is especially bugs me when it comes to Destiel and Merthur I mark any post that uses the tag queerbaiting with destiel and merthur as misleading on tiktok. Because all one has to do is go on Twitter to find the writers old posts and reposts confirming with fans that they meant for both pairs to be canon.
Because the writers have confirmed their support of both pairings after the show aired and fought long and hard to make a reality only able to sneak in hints . Leading the shows to have queer undertones but due to it being 2008 the writers tried to give us sprinkles of their true vision.

I have something that kinda heals how the endings of Destiel and Merthur . Starting with Merthur bare with me this just a season 6 basic outline Bible so it might be a little over the place.
I know about the other season 6 out there that people finished but it bothered me it was not merthur. But Merlin and Morgana? Maybe in season 1 or 2 even maybe 4 but I am sorry did we watch the same show?
Merlin was absolutely disgustingly devoted to Arthur and yes it started out as just duty and destiny but Merlin constantly put Arthur above his own freedom and happiness and it nearly destroyed him . Also he killed Morgana and grew to despise her in the later seasons especially the last one because she manipulated mordred into killing Arthur.
Arthur finally returns Arthur discovers bi sexuality anime, comics manga metal, soul and blues , and chapel roan, Billie , sabrina carpenter loves spirtbox ghost, Killswitch engage, downswing, paradox, radkey, visions of Atlantis, ale storm, flogging Molly, mufford a sons, Linkin Park, motionless white, asked new and skate punk and ska, basically Arthur goes down the music rabbit hole merges a mixed music taste god.

But, they don't want to be treated differently so they hide their magic by choice or use their magic for healing , hospitals, pretend to be magician slight of hand magic , in palm reading, ren faires this time magic is hidden due to time due to modern technology being more convenient and safe not due to persecution.
Also, fear of being committed or experimented on . A few government leaders know magic is real but don't really care.
Arthur came back for Merlin because he noticed everyone but him went to heaven and he missed him . Gwen and Lance got together in heaven. Arthur admitted he loved both her and Merlin but loved Merlin more.
But was under the impression that Merlin didn't feel the same until the day of his death. Arthur mourned their lost time and wished they could have more and the faires tell him of the prophecy.
Arthur gets increasingly angry that once again Merlin didn't tell him everything he didn't know he was supposed to go to Merlin. The faires gave him a Vulcan like memory trance that showed him all the events of the show in flashes and flashes of all the wars, magic and places Merlin had been through including all his jobs as doctor, king, poet, knight, solider, librarian, history teacher, wildlife photographer, singer, and healer.
He finds doctor Merlin hot but will pretend not to because he is still our favorite blonde bimbo tsundere.
Merlin: found out he was demisexual -bisexual prefers men mostly. Had a few children and wives but all of them died he out lived them. Most modern magic users are related to him .

But , once Arthur showed up,he starts fixes old technology with his magic and sells it on eBay, owns a niche bookstore the bookstore has a basement where he holds DandD games has a magic the gathering collection and Pokemon card collection, likes to hike and go on photography trips , loves how to train your dragon, witcher,Star Trek , Zelda, lord of the rings, doctor who, good omens, harry potter , Percy Jackson. (but does not support Neil or j.k) can speak every language, uses his magic for house chores, is a proud cat dad, sings in a underground folk Metal band called Emrys he used to hate the name but now embraces it and even started using it as his last name.
Skateboards but isn't as good as Arthur Arthur does more technical trick skating Merlin does craving transition vert skating.
is a gaming god and can defeat anyone in dark souls and mortal Kombat but Is extremely humble about it making everyone annoyed and jealous.
Still trips over his own feet occasionally due to his long stick legs.
is a pranking menace do not start a prank war with Merlin. Is not good at math or saving money because he buys more dragon figures and convention tickets ( Merlin can just make More money with magic but Arthur disproves of it because it is basically money fraud.
Arthur has to budget everything and forces Merlin to give some stuff away every few months. My reasoning is Merlin grew up poor and once he lived a few centuries he had to restart over and give his " family members" money trusts that almost never runs out. Acts like he is annoyed by Arthur 's worry over money, chores and bills but secretly finds it endearing.
Has Auhd dislikes spicy or sour foods Arthur ( doesn't actually like it as much he loves trolling merlin). He does actually like spicy food but it hurts his stomach so merlin has a constant stash of heart burn pills.
He was the one who asked Arthur out. Even after thousand years .
He was too afraid to ask for what he wanted but after months of over planning or overthinking he randomly asks him as a mistake during making food in the kitchen instead of trying to do a grand romantic gesture.
Beats himself up for it but was rewarded with a steamy make up for lost time make out session.
The season main plot will be merthur getting together the subpliot is world war 3 on the brink of happening and them trying to to stop it Arthur and Merlin train the new knights of Camelot what is it is like to be real warriors and we finally get scenes of badass power couple merthur.
Fighting badguys while looking at each other in awe , or kissing while magically flying badguys and sword stabbing ( basically makeout foreplay fighting)
My reasoning is if Merthur did get together they would be incredibly affectionate and disgusting but after a thousand years they earned it.
Arthur finds out Merlin has figured out how to turn his magic into magic energy arrows and shoots a bow and arrow. Arthur once again finds Merlin unfairly hot.
Shirtless Merlin scene with Arthur helping Merlin dress after he gets a shoulder or leg injury ( role reversal of Arthur dressing Merlin half naked)
The sigil season becomes Canon with Arthur proposing in modern world while Merlin has a flashback to sigil scene only this time it is a extended sigil scene Arthur confesses to Merlin if they Somehow survive the souls of the dead if he saw Arthur has more than just a friend that if he too felt this connection He and Merlin felt .. if not he will continue to pursue Gwen but if he does he will break up with her to be with him .
Just like the the no magic in camlot scene Merlin bites his tongue and says he doesn't feel the same and he should be with Gwen. For the future of the kingdom but after he gets back from camlot he goes to his room and cries holding the sigil around his hands.
Arthur tries not to cry and says he understands and tells Merlin to keep it because he might be with Gwen but he trusts the future of Camlot to him .
Cuts Arthur back to modern world where Arthur is proposing Merlin holds his hands in front of his face and starts crying ( female proposal pose ) and says nothing for a long time In shock and couldn't remember a time he was this happy.
Arthur awkwardly standing on one knee says 'Don't such a girl and answer me clotpole"
Merlin says : "Hey that is my word yes a thousand times yes"
Arthur cheers with excitement and grabs Merlin by his hips and spins him around with excitement. Arthur still holding Merlin's hips leans in to Merlin's ear.
Arthur :"Who is the royal prat now "?
Merlin: "Still you"..he whispers back while stroking Arthur's face as he goes in for a kiss.
There writers keeps it canon compliant while also finding a reasonable way to continue the story for just one more season or two.
( in case you can't tell the skateboarding and metal head merthur is fulfillment I think it would be cool)
