The article people cited about Sandfall using genAI and used to call expedition 33 "AI slop" - The low-cost creative revolution: How technology is making art accessible to everyone from El País - added a clarification from Sandfall today:
So the small tidbit in the article with about Expedition 33 was discussed with El País a day after the game released, and then the full article was published in July. Which is well over half a year ago, and the article itself was not about E33 but about technology in general, like the award winning movie Flow using Blender, the award winning movie The Brutalist actually using GenAI, and the small excerpt about E33 people were losing their mind over, before it won any awards or had the acclaim it has now. Because it only released a day prior.
That one tweet piggybacking over Larian controversy was quoting this El País article, instead of an article from Gamepressure that came out this month (December 4th) where Sandfall state they do not want AI involved in anything creative and are not interested in anything made with artificial intelligence. The Gamepressure article got this from an interview sandfall had from 3djuegos a day before that.
Quoting a summary in a tweet from nuhre_:
A limited number of pre-existing UE Marketplace 3D assets were used
None were created with generative AI
No GenAI assets are in the final game
AI tools were briefly tested in 2022 for placeholder textures
Those placeholders were removed within five days after launch and replaced with the intended textures

Doing that gives permission to AI Boosters to do what they do best - take credit for things they had no hand in. They now take a game that was 99.99% a human crafted labor of love and say "Look at the power of GenAI to make these incredible games possible" when it had no meaningful impact at all.

TL;DR Sandfall did not use GenAI for creative endeavors in Expedition 33 (writing, music, all art) aside from a few experiments for placeholder textures that were not intended for full release, and their stance on using GenAI is a firm "No".
