I was coming out of my Mortal Instruments phase and wanted to discover more books. I just typed "top YA books" and this series came out and I immediately ordered them.

Yes, I read it in publication order.

Also, back then, I didn't know the difference between US and UK editions so I was so confused and frustrated as to why my copy of TAB was smaller and stiffer than the other 2 books.
