The really important kind of freedom involves attention and awareness and discipline, and being able truly to care about other people and to sacrifice for them over and over in myriad petty, unsexy ways every day. That is real freedom. That is being educated, and understanding how to think. The alternative is unconsciousness, the default setting, the rat race, the constant gnawing sense of having had, and lost, some infinite thing.

Have you ever been to Malibu? It’s breathtaking. There’s nothing more beautiful in America. Leaving the concrete jungle for this was a dream come true.

In June, I had the opportunity to visit Malibu, CA for a LiNK Summit, right before attending a business trip. Everything fell into place— I found a way to have my flight to CA and to my business trip in Indiana for free, and got to take Virgin America! Virgin America is an experience in itself, with service that goes beyond anything you see in US Airways or even 20-hour international flights. I got to watch the opening World Cup match streaming live while in the air, and ordered lunch straight from the screen in front of me using my own credit card. The flight was comfortable and time went by so quickly, that I didn’t realize it took 6 hours to get there. Did I mention it was all free thanks to BofA’s rewards points!? Everything feels 10x better when it’s free. Landing in LAX and stepping outside to breath fresh Californian air gave me life. I know all native Californians say LAX is the most polluted part of CA, but have they ever stepped foot in NYC? I love the city like it’s my own home, but I walk around with my nose closed 90% of the time thanks to the pollution and garbage. LA was like heaven to me, even the random strangers complimenting my hair didn’t make me feel the least bit dirty. That was a nice change from the disgusting cat-callers of the east coast. There were palm trees everywhere.. along the road, in the pavement, near the University I was staying in. It was my first time seeing palm trees, I don’t even know what they are! But I actually cried seeing them.. because they were real and not just a thing of film. While on my shuttle to the university, we drove along the Pacific Coast Highway, which is exactly what the name says it is. I reached there around 5pm, so the sun was still up but it was starting to set but I couldn’t believe I was there. Celebrity beach houses lined the coast and surfers owned the tide. The weather was warm, but it wasn’t sweltering, just pleasant. Everything about this state was perfect and it was in that moment that I decided I needed to go back and settle my life there.
