In general i think opinions about the live action one piece adaptation have been positive and i SOOOO agree I think they did a wonderful job but unfortunately there is one thing that is bothering me quite a bit and it is the erasure of the middle east by casting a non middle eastern character for Vivi!
I know this opinion is very unpopular and dont get me wrong, I love the actress and think she is so gorgeous but to cast an Indian actress for a character from "Alabasta", a desert state with heavy inspiration taken from egypt is just in my eyes rude. Alabasta could literally be Arabasta. It stems back to orientalism imo and it upsets me a bit. I have seen people that argue with the fact that Oda handpicked her himself but Oda is not perfect and this is yet another example of it! I wish he would have picked someone that fits the country more. But thats just my 2 cents about it ig
I've seen people reply to this by saying "Alabasta is also inspired by India" so let me tell you guys why this is actually an issue.
It is an orientalism argument and i will explain why: Orientalism erases cultural specificity by mixing multiple non-western cultures into a single homogenous "oriental fantasy". In this case specifically in Odas world building, Alabasta is a mix of "brown" cultures which erases the real identity and history behind each culture. Casting Vivi fits this pattern because Alabasta is constructed as an exotic desert state designed around orientalist aestethics.
It is quite obvious that Alabasta is visually coded as the middle east and north africa, it has a sultan like ruler, desert landscapes, architectural visuals associated with arab and egyptian culture and even the outfits visually reference the middle east. To argue that it is also inspired by India is exactly where the Orientalism issue emerges. There are certainly Indian inspired elements but to use that as a justification overrides the dominant middle eastern cultural coding and collapses distinct regions into an "eastern" category.
India is not culturally, historically or politically equivalent to arab or middle eastern culture and to treat them as interchangeable reproduces the orientalist logic! SO THEREFOR: The casting just reinforces the deep issue with orientalism and as a person that visually fits middle east, I am very much allowed to speak up about this and be upset that the casting for the one arab character turned out the way it did! thank you

what’s your favorite piece you’ve written?
hmm I think my favorite is my very old post about wearing a revealing bikini, but only because I remember a lot of people interacting and requesting more characters so I had a lot of fun with that post... but if it's about favorite in general, I think it's the love at first sight for Ace!!
