I like to bring a little something when I go over to my parents house and hang out for a bit. One time, I brought margarita fixings. My mother loved how I made my drink so much, I made this little recipe cheat sheet for her so she could make them at home when I’m not there. Now you guys know my secret too. ;) Let me know what you think!
A little something for my mommy this mothers day. But this goes out to all the other mommies out there and mother figures who do so much to take care of the ones they love. <3
GOSH DARN IT.
I got a water pen and I’m totally in love. So something watery themed was in order for experimentation.
Early Grey Process
Things have been a little crazy on my end for the last week, but working on a new illustration, when given time, always helps me relax and find a bit of piece of mind. Not to mention copious amounts of tea.... which is where I got inspired for this little project!
Here are a new little snapshots for what i'm working on:
I can't wait to show you the finished product!
Throw Back Thursday: Buzzfeed
Remember when I got to help Buzzfeed with one of their videos?
SUPER FUN DAY.
While getting to draw on Ella's face was super fun, I think my favorite part about the video was getting to draw the deflating bladder. I did a bit of animation is college so it was super fun to break out the light table and play a bit!
Check out the video if you haven't yet!
Throw Back Thursday: Beneath The Surface
I love going back through old illustration from college. It's filled with so much nostalgia and remembering of where I was at in my life when I was creating that work. It's much like listening to an old album that brings back speific memories.
I was asked to create an illustration with the title Beneath The Surface. I was allowed to do whatever I wanted with the concept and metaphor, it just had to be inspired by the title.
Around the same time that I started that assignment, I forced myself to go to the doctor. And if you guys know me at all, you know how much I hate doing to the doctor. But for about a month or two, I was feeling constantly fatigued, had lots of aches and pains, and was catching every cold that went around school. In short, I was feeling pretty gross.
When I went to the doctor, surprisingly (and not so surprised at the same time) I was given a depression test. The doctor then told me I was clinically depressed and wrote me a prescription or medication. To make a long story short, I realized what was dealing with beneath the surface. I was trying to act normal around my friends and family so they wooudln't think anything was wrong. I felt like a horrible person for burdening them with my feelings. I was so so so wrong and there will always be someone to reach out and talk to if you are dealing with something like depression. So this illustration was my way of trying to convey what I was feeling, along with knowing there was hope.
Also, on the subject of depression, I never ended up filling the prescription. I really really wanted to find a way to cope with my depression without medication, so I turned to what came most natural to me: painting. If you haven't yet, and are interested in this subject, check out my collection of illustrations Midnight Menageries, all having to do with dealing with my depression and expressing those feelings.
A Cool Thing Just Happened!
I was asked by Ella from Buzzed to do a little drawing or comic about an experience where I was cat called or harassed. Not a fun subject, BUT, I love the awareness it's bringing to this issue and I wholeheartedly wanted to take part.
So this is my quick doodle that I made! She's looking for submissions so please join in if you were ever too afraid to voice what happened to you before! Ella posted this picture on her instagram, and the amount of comments and stories was overwhelmingly supportive.
All you have to do to take part is post something on instagram and tag it #RealLifeCatCalling.
Cat calling and all forms of sexual harassment (whether it's directed at a male or female. Yes, it happens to guys too.) should be voiced and talked about and brought attention. No more victim blaming, no more disrespecting each other. That's my two sense on the subject.
Bonus material: If you guys don't follow my instagram, and my art doesn't make you want to, you may love this lovable goofball that goes by the name of Max. He makes lots of appearances, and I can never get anything done when he wants to play or snuggle. :)

Waves Illustration
I wanted to post this so much sooner, but it was a gift for a very special friend and I didn't want to ruin the surprise!
When I first read this quote, it really moved me. It was so applicable to what I had going on at the time. From October until recently, I had been getting sick close to every two weeks. I felt like I was barely keeping up with every day life. I was getting frustrated easier. I was forgetting things more and trying to fit too much into every day. This quote was constantly a reminder during that period that those moments wouldn't last forever. (and thank goodness they didn't.)
This illustration was originally designed to be a tattoo, but the tattoo artist wasn't able to make it small enough to fit on my friend the way she wanted it to. She messaged me very bummed on the subject, so I came up with a plan b.
I took the originally typography that I did and turned it into a poster, which I mailed to her as a surprise! That way she could still have the art, with the quote that she chose. She needs to bug me though about designing her other tattoo. ;)
Throw Back Thursday: Warrior Mermaid
While I was going through some old archives, I found some little gems that brought a little smile to my face. (I really like drawing mermaids guys.)
I went through an art phase of wanting to paint entirely in photoshop. No pencil drawings, no non digital prep work. I really wanted to fine tune my skills in digital illustration and work entirely in photoshop. It's not a style that I prefer doing anymore, but I certainly did have fun with it.
So here's this old doodle to share with you guys. I think I did this one circa 2010 one summer.
Do you ever start going through old things, whether it be art, cards or photos that bring on a huge nostalgia factor?

I Prick You Valentine!
For whatever reason, since I was a little girl, one of my favorite holidays was Valentine's Day.
Which I always thought was a little weird, since I hated pink, only wore dresses if I had to (unless it was for costumes, then all rules were out the window) and also hated chocolate. (WHAT WAS WRONG WITH ME.) Don't worry. Things have changed for the better.
But still to this day, no matter whether I'm dating someone or not, I love the idea that we have a special day to tell those that we care about that we love them.
So Happy Valentine's Day to all my lovely followers and friends. Your support and love always means so much to me. <3 This one is for you guys!

A Little Throwback
I just love it when you go through old sketch books and find little hidden gems you were so proud of years ago, and still are today. I posted the sketch on my Instagram a little while back, but it's taken me a hot minute to find the finished colored illustration.
It started off as a doodle while I was brain storming an illustration for my grand mother. She got her degree in evolutionary biology, and she to this day is still one of my biggest inspirations for learning and for the arts. When she asked me to do a painting based off her favorite subject, there was no way I could say no (besides the fact that she's my grandma and all and there's nothing I would do if she asked.) Her painting came out much lighter and... friendlier.
While I was doodling I was thinking about the darker side of evolution. That things had to die to make way for new life as it kept changing and evolving.
There's still prints and things on my Society 6 shop if you love it. <3
Advent: Animal Kingdom
The third light of Advent is the light of beasts-- All await the birth, from the greatest and in least.
My family always had a ton of pets. When it wasn't kittens constantly running around the house, suddenly we had a cage full of birds and a tortoise to top it off as well. If we had guests coming out that day I would put little signs around the house such as "tortoise crossing" by the front gate or "bird aviary" by the huge sliding glass door the separated the house from the indoor patio. I wanted to pretend that my home was a zoo just so I could introduce the strangers to all our beloved animals. So when christmas season came around, we definitely had more stockings then that for my brother, mother, father and I.
When this week of advent came around I made sure my loved ones got a little more attention. Plus my brother and I couldn't wait to see how silly our cats would get when they finally got to play with their cat nip stocking stuffers.
Do you have a tradition that you do with your pets for the holiday season?
Advent: Plant Kingdom
“The second light of Advent is the light of plants– Plants that reach up to the sun and in the breezes dance.”
The second week of advent has already come and gone. This was always one of my favorite weeks because in school we focused on the plant world. Coincidentally this was when my family would always go out and pick our christmas tree as well. My brother would have a ball crawling in and around the trees, searching for the most perfect one for our home. Plus the smell of the fir in the living room was the defining moment that christmas time had finally arrived.
Still to this day, it doesn't feel like the holiday season until there's some sort of pine or christmasy sent floating through the house. What do you do to make it feel like it's time for the holidays?
Advent: Earth Kingdom
"The first light of Advent, it is the light of stone–. The Light that lives in crystals, seashells, and bones."
I feel like this year has been spiraling faster and faster toward the end. The last christmas season felt like it was just yesterday, but here we are again. More of a reason to try and find a moment or two of the day to ground myself.
I grew up celebrating Advent in school. Not only did the teachers make the rooms festive and inviting with the smell of beeswax and pine, but we did things very different from the normal christian customs. We had a little wreath and 4 candles. Each candle represented a different kingdom, the earth kingdom (crystals and rocks), the plant kingdom (flowers and other holiday related plants), the animal kingdom (we used little wooden toys or the teacher would make a beautiful chalk drawing on the blackboard) and the human kingdom. The nature table in our classroom would be decorated with the things associated for that week. We also had a little song we learned every year and would sing each week while lighting the candles.
So here's my little tribute to Advent this week, in hopes of grounding those old traditions so that I can keep them going even though i'm adulting in the real world. Sometimes, a little extra light is all you need.
Giving Thanks
This year was a doozy. I moved twice, changed jobs multiple times, learned some hard lessons, but at the same time there are so many things to be thankful for.
Last year I wrote about how thankful I was for the life lessons I was receiving at the time. This year is very different. This year is all about the people. New friends who are like sisters, the relationships born out of adversity and strengthened by trust and love. The camaraderie of friends during difficult situations. It's about the random early morning diner breakfasts and the last minute plans to dress up for a house party. Grabbing dinner with girlfriends and the ones who held your hand when you thought life was too tough. I wouldn't have been able to make it through this year so far if it weren't for my incredible and loving support group. So THANK YOU, from the bottom of my heart.
