Witchy Things to Do with Oranges
I absolutely love this post! Something cool to keep in mind is that oranges promote healing and wellness, usually physically but sometimes emotionally and spiritually as well. This is why so many people are drawn to citrus-scented aromatherapy! If you are wanting to try aromatherapy, look into a diffuser for your home or office and / or an aromatherapy necklace to wear when you travel!
If you're looking into aromatherapy or essential oils, this is just a soft reminder to make sure: (1) You aren't living somewhere prone to molding (2) You make sure all scents / herbs you get are safe for nearby animals, pet family, other plants and insects, etc (3) You heavily research the brand, as many brands put a lot of sickly chemicals into their aromas
Orange as a color is often associated with joy and wealth as well! Not everything that is orange is going to make you happy, rich or healthy, but things that can boost that overall joy / abundance are things like:
Oranges, tangerines, mandarins, etc (especially the juice when consuming, or the rines in spells!)
Orange calcite
Pumpkins (jack-o-lanterns are actually protective! you'll likely see a post about this from me later)
Orange tabby cats (aside from being amazing creatures and beings usually, cats actually neutralize negative energy! black cats are better at this than other cats, but almost any cat can do it)
In Chinese culture, oranges represent good luck, as well as prosperity and completeness! Apricots are symbols of wealth and gold.
Many witches believe that oranges are great for attraction and positivity. (I am unsure if this is rooted in tradition or not.)
I associate oranges with a few things, including summer (hence my up-and-coming small business name, Aestas Dilexistavit, which translates to Summer Has Come To Love, and business logo, which is can orange slice).
When sour oranges were introduced to the Caribbean, they became an easy ingredient for marinading various foods and for effectively cleaning / doing laundry.
According to this post by Alejaibra's House, "Oranges are a symbol of sweetness, abundance, and life force. In Yoruba spirituality, they are often associated with Osun, the Orisa of sweet water, love, beauty, fertility, and prosperity. Offering oranges at a river is to invite sweetness, blessings, and abundance into your life, as rivers are sacred places of cleansing and renewal."
For many African and Indigenous people (and others), oranges are a symbol of resilience.
In that same post, Alejaibra's House also wrote, "In Hoodoo, oranges often symbolize drawing sweetness, joy, and success into one’s life. They can be used in rituals for love, attraction, and prosperity, similar to their use in Yoruba practices to honor river deities like Osun."
For Native Americans, the color orange is the main color of a recently developed day of remembrance known as Orange Shirt Day, where over tens of thousands of Native American children suffered genocidal kidnapping, oppression, torture, rape, abuse, and death, at the hands of US American and Canadian religious boarding schools. It has become a symbol of empowerment, honour, and perseverance. However, it is also associated with pain because of these traumas.
According to this video by Hindu Academy, orange is the color of renunciation and a sign of Hinduism. Orange also has other associations in Hinduism with high emphasis in spiritual in religious aspects.
In general, some people also believe that oranges to represent or support vitality, energy, warmth (like the sun), natural resources, holiness or status or a big god / creator, community and mutuality, and occasionally mourning, among other associations.
Visualization and Energy Work
One thing I absolutely love about the post above that I'm re-blogging is that it touches on ideas of visualization and energy work, which can be a HUGE part of not only color associations but magical and spiritual work in general!
-> "Think of" can be changed to "picture this." Want becomes will. Dream becomes real. Why? Because you're calling in the energy to not only help conceptualize this, but feel it. You are asking for the energy you desire to make its place known on your trip. You are asking the energy to help and support you in this mission without harming others or yourself. You are reminding your brain that dreaming and good wishes are all fine and dandy and that you have the power to make it happen too. You are autonomous, and your freedom of choice allows you to decide your path.
-> Fate is the destination. Autonomy is your choice of which destination you're heading towards and the path to getting there.
-> You can choose to ask the energy for help and really implement the mindset you seek to have on your trip / journey. Make sure the energy knows you intend to eat the orange.
If you struggle with visualization (for example, if you have a disorder where can't picture things in your mind), that's okay! Oils
Aromatherapy is great, but essential oils - and other oils - can be used for other purposes as well! If you are making your own or buying your own, make sure that it is friendly to your skin and / or whatever surface you plan to put them on. Even if you bought something for aromatherapy, that does not automatically make it safe for skin contact. Oils like this can be great for self-love, physical healing, balance, abundance and glow, and other things! I definitely recommend incorporating them into some healing rituals / spells / workings or some glamour rituals / spells / workings!
Candles
When all else fails, buy a candle.
Haha but seriously, candles are a great way to lean on the support of oranges. I know that sometimes material things aren't always affordable or accessible, and that sometimes oranges can be picked out of somebody's backyard - definitely valid and if that's what you can do, that's totally okay! Things like digital art (or even physical), or just prayer, visualizations, affirmations and energy work (which don't usually require any materials) are great alternatives if oranges or something of that color is inaccessible to you. However, if you can get a candle - even a cheap one - then I recommend it! You'll likely just want to make sure the brand isn't harmful. Reasons why I recommend getting a candle:
-> Not only can you smell it and breathe it in, but it fills up your home as well
-> If essential oil diffusers are too expensive or not safe to use, you can simply light a candle!
-> Candles are sometimes low-cost (and some people make and give away candles for free)
-> If you have a sensitive nose, some candles are soft or light enough to not cause migraines / pain to your sinuses
-> Lasts longer than the average size container of essential oils for aromatherapy
-> You can have someone else light the candle and blow it out before you get back to prepare your space for the healing energy
-> Candle scents don't disappear often depending on where you live (i.e. sometimes the scent lingers) so you'll be exposed to the healing, joy, abundance for a longer time than just eating an orange
-> Candles are easily replaceable
-> Making your own is an option if you have the $ and that can actually be cheaper than buying bulk candles
Offerings
Oranges are often given in offerings!
Some people offer oranges to ancestors who liked them. Other people offer them to spirits or deities who are associated with them or associated with the orange's associations. Some people offer oranges to other spirits too, such as nature spirits or ghosts, or even other living humans, such as unhoused folks.
I don't often give offerings, but when I do (usually in a trade or deal), I like to offer oranges on an offering tray. I'll do an orange in exchange for the favor, usually. I've done that for Pluto, Hades and Thanatos before. I've also considered deals with Apollo before, who is associated with the fruit, for long-term things. The idea was that he would help me with my therapy sessions in exchange for a slice of orange per session, but I declined feeling like that was too little and ended up exchanging the support for a glass of Japanese orange tea instead.
Spells / Workings
I kept mentioning this above in specific instances, but oranges can be used in a variety of spells and workings! Some ideas:
Orange rines in a money jar
Orange water in a classic spiritual bath or a bath intended for spiritual uses (especially good for boosting your physical health)
Hanging orange rines around your space (don't let them rot!)
Growing an orange tree - not only would you be able to form a close bond with it's spirit, but the oranges would likely be healthier or boost you more than a store-bought orange would
Make your own essential oil
Peel an orange and pray / visualize as you pull the pieces apart, assign it symbolism or meaning or just use it to focus. You could also use an orange candle to do this instead. You can do this during rituals, not just on the go, and incorporate it into larger workings!
Florida water (more below)
Make orange water or orange juice to drink
You can include oranges in your food dishes / recipes! Sprinkle some kitchen spell-work in there if you like
Just remember to be kind to any energy you call in and utilize!
Sprays
If candles and oils aren't your kind of thing, maybe consider some sprays!
Florida water is amazing for cleansing, as well as other things like abundance. You can buy it or easily make your own. Please be mindful and consider washing everything you spray down after spraying the water (things like lemon and salt in the water are common and great for cleansing, but they also absorb negative energy, so unless you're spraying it outside your home or around entrances as a warning to protect, make sure you're not signing your personal items up for being negative energy sponges)
Different sprays offer different scents, such as Febreeze (be careful of Glade because of toxic chemicals they use)
Orange water can be sprayed
Tea
Orange can be great in tea! Not only can tea be used for things like energy work, but tea is often great for health as well! You can get caffeinated or non-caffeinated, or even make your own! Some tea is herbs and rines, other tea is things like a gel that melts in the water, etc.
Citrus in General
Citrus fruits, juices and waters are great for a variety of causes and purposes, both listed and unlisted!
Oranges are healing, lemons absorb negative energy, and limes are great for staking boundaries! Other citrus fruits have other benefits, associations, symbolisms, and things to keep in mind as well!
