There is this though bouncing around my mind like a windows screen saver, so I might as well share it.

Troy has a shitty father who left his wife for a woman barely any older than his son.

Curtis Barrett was also not particularly happy or supportive of Troy's coming out and I think it's fair to say he is unlikely to change.

So once he figures out Troy isn't magically turning straight, he'd probably cut him off (which would hurt Troy as hell, but probably for the best in the long run).

What if after that he tries for a do-over child with his new wife? Let's be honest he wants another son, but this time straight and willing to submit to his ideology. Preferably also play hockey and be willing to take over the crane company in the future.

There's no way that child grows up mentally sound. And when Troy finds out about it, he feels incredibly guilty about it, even though there is no justifiable way it's his fault.

Shane and Ilya´s 6 year old daughter has to make a family tree for her class. llya is feeling down about not having pictures of his mother for her to put in, and then he sees she draws her with a halo over her head 😇 and she writes "grandma Irina, no photo but she looks like me, I have her eyes and her name, she looks after me." Ilya cries.

thinking about how shane and ilya's expressions of queerness are so different and how it doesn't relate to their preferred positions during sex at all, because it's so refreshing to see.

shane is a bottom through and through, but unlike in many other queer media, he isn't effeminate or delicate. he's masculine and brash and jocky, he works his grill and sets up fires and wears fucking.. khaki pants or whatever. he's just a guy. a guy that prefers to be fucked.

ilya likes topping (although he would be down for whatever as long as it makes shane happy) but he isn't some burly, macho "i will dominate you" dude like tops are shown. he wears his cunty little jean paul gaultier tiger print and slutty tank tops, and he's sassy and has a gay accent in russian and makes these flamboyant hand gestures. they don't take away from his masculinity, but the important thing is that ilya doesn't have to be gruff and manly and stoic.

and it makes me so happy to see that the weird gender role adjacent stereotypes about topping and bottoming arent placed on them.

Thinking about Troy as a dad and he’s so scared he’s going to mess things up and end up being like his dad. Except he hangs his kids art on the walls and on the fridge, and whatever doesn’t fit is kept in an album safe for them to see anytime. He’s there for all of his daughter’s and son’s hockey games. He always fights for his daughter in the face of misogyny and paints his nails with his son. He doesn’t shame his son when he wants to switch sports and is always there when his daughter expresses her fears and anxieties. It’s only years later when Harris gifts him a book filled with pictures of all these memories for Father’s Day that he bursts into tears and realizes he’s giving his kids the childhood he wished he had, and that he is in fact, nothing like Curtis.

I do really love the idea that Shane is bad at being gay and doesn't get queer culture at all and kind of stands on the edges.

But I also really enjoy the idea of him saying something bitchy under his breath once, that just happens to be caught by one of the gay guys at the party, and now he's surrounded by the loudest, outest, gayest men who are all gleefully pointing to various people at the party or shoving their phones in his face to hear his bitchy opinions.

They form a big group, and eventually Ilya comes along thinking he has to rescue Shane, but he quickly realizes Shane is having a great time being judgemental with the lads.

To be clear, Shane still knows nothing about fashion, but he knows what looks stupid, and he knows when people are trying too hard, and he knows what good, expensive shit looks like so he can clock any knock-off from a mile away.

And the gays can help point out why the things he thinks are ugly are, in fact, ugly.

I also really like the idea of him ganging up with Kip at the awards night and just reading all the other hockey players to filth. Like, Kip just giddy and giggling at his side while Shane systematically destroys every person who walks by (his husband included). He's quoting stats. He's bringing up known (and sometimes unknown) character flaws. He's pulling old plays from memory and breaking down exactly why and how that player fucked up and what it means about him as a person.

And Kip is just like "No! Oh my god, stop!! No, don't actually stop, say more right now!" 😈

Imagining Shane gets stopped outside somewhere and its to some young influencer who wants to ask some questions and Shane agrees, if only because he's learned to play nice

And then the girl asks him "which house are you in?"

And Shane, confused but media trained to not ask clarification, just starts spewing detail after detail about the architecture of his home, what tiles he picked for the kitchen and the type of lighting for the gym, and then finishes it by going on a rant about proper insulation

And the poor influencer is just staring

"Alright, Hollander. Out with it," Ilya said gruffly, frowning at his boyfriend and facing him with crossed arms as soon as Yuna and David’s car disappeared down the driveway and out of sight.

Shane, who'd gone quiet some time during the latter part of the evening, pursed his lips and threw him a look. "What?"

"You are mad at me. What, you did not like my joke about being favorite child?" he asked, smiling softly and reaching to swipe his thumb gently at Shane's chin, which was adorably wrinkled in annoyance.

But even though Shane normally would have melted, he just rolled his eyes. "No, Rozanov. I didn't like when you joked about being lazy."

Ilya froze, eyes flickering downward, and he stepped back a little as his world shifted. "Oh. Is…is nothing, Hollander, I was just-"

"No, Ilya. That's the thing. It's not nothing," Shane gave him a small, affectionate smirk, moving back into his space. "You can't call us 'boyfriends' and then expect me to not… know you. You keep saying that you’re lazy and I know there's some fucked-up reason  behind it and–and you don't have to talk about it, but you should know that it's not true!"

Ilya stared, eyes twinging, heart hammering, into Shane's fiery expression as the phantom of his father yelled insults into his ears, contradicting everything that the man in front of him had just said.

But when Shane was here....here, with his hands on Ilya's shoulders, looking at him like he was worth something, his father's words got a little quieter. Just a little. 

Maybe less believable, too. 

"Okay," he murmured, nodding once, shakily, allowing Shane the win for the first time in his life.

The other man smirked. "Plus. How long did you bug me with texts before we actually fucked for the first time? Like two fucking years or something? Definitely not the actions of a lazy man."

Ilya let out a laugh. "No, that is the actions of a horny man who has seen Shane Hollander come and wants to see more."

Shane grinned. “Understandable.”
