"Yes, yes, I most certainly did. The spirit of local commerce is truly an impressive thing."

Even if the results of it were disgusting, he added to himself. Richard was always somewhat dramatic, and talking about small businesses and the like was a genuine interest he had and as such he soon went into a 'philosophical' pose as the duo came to a crosswalk.

"Indeed! One of my most preferred pursuits is to examine the inner workings of this city. One way to do this is to examine how local business goes about its, well, business. The way the common man barters and haggles over a barrel of apples can be seen as a reflection of society itself. Trust me, it is deeply satisfying."

"If you excuse me, Officer. I would like to lead you to the restaurant I had in mind. Oh, and believe me, I did. For example, I explored various street vendors and sampled their wares and judged them fairly and honestly."

He recalled one particular food truck that disagreed with his elegant palate. His tongue lashing was especially acerbic. Why, if he recalled correctly, the vendor was fighting back tears by the time he was done.

Hattie chuckles and pokes her feathered companion gently with a finger

"Oh do not mind him. He is just a little moody because tonight is normally movie night at our house! He has promised to behave for us though."

This was true, in his pigeon mind Otoko had agreed to not cause trouble for their evening. However this wouldn’t stop him keeping a wary eye on Wellington, and one false move could change everything.

Hattie normally dawdled at the office, finishing typing here, clearing some mugs in the sink there, doing the little jobs that hadn’t got done during the day. But this evening she was excited and as soon as the clock struck 5 she was out the door before anyone could call her back. Otoko had to grip a little tighter to her shoulder as his mistress walks briskly back towards the park.

"This is so exciting Otoko!" she muttered as she walked, her eyes sparkling, "To be invited out by a charming gentleman on such short notice. A man so worldly and smart…not to mention well dressed and handsome. Gosh, there must be a happy god watching over me tonight!"

Otoko didn’t give much of a response as they entered the park. To her delight, there was Mr Wellington. He could have ditched her, he could have let her standing for a prank, but he hadn’t! Her heart thudded with excitement as she approached him.

"We meet again!" she called, trying her best to hide her excitement.

"So we do. A pleasure to see you again, Officer."

With a casual demeanor, he stood himself up from the bench to meet her halfway. Judging by her excited demeanor, she was just as happy to see him as he thought he would be. He offered a hand to her to greet her properly.

"So, then, how are you? And how is dear Otoko? He still seems a bit sour."

"Until this afternoon, Mr Wellington!" she replies, before turning away with a spring in her step. She has to hold back from giggling with delight.

Otoko on the other hand casts Wellington one last withering look as Hattie leaves.

"Au revoir, Officer!"

He watched her carefully as she left the park, all with a knowing smirk directed at that cursed bird. Perhaps trying to gloat to a bird would be seen as 'silly' or 'immature' but given how Otoko had eyed him that whole time, Richard felt he had it coming.

Now, all he would have to do is spend his day as he had planned on doing in the first place. He spent the next few hours walking and exploring the city, stopping at many of the local shops and grocers to elegantly browse. Time flies when you're having fun, as they say, though, and by the time he checks his watch again, it was coming on 5 PM. Not wanting to be late for his upcoming engagement, he hailed a taxi and arrived at the park at around 4:40 PM. He set forth for the park's entrance, and soon sat himself at the very same bench the two had agreed upon. He wasn't sure what he would get out of this, but if the woman would continue to be so easy to wow and impress, it could prove to be enjoyable, one way or the other.

"I shall see you later then? Here by this bench?"

He followed her along behind as she made her way to the entrance of the park. His plan was falling in place quite nicely, and he hoped he would know her true intentions once she was off work.

"You are quite welcome, Officer. And yes, you shall, but first, when will you be getting off work? I would like to have a general idea of when to return here. Missing a chance to see you again would truly be a shame."

Otoko was giving a look that said if he could make fake puking sounds he would. Gods this guy was a toad, but Hattie was drawn in hook, line and sinker. Her face flushed red as she tried to find the words without giving away too much of her excitement. A handsome gentleman like this was asking her out?

"Oh my….gracious…that sounds like a lovely idea! I…would not like to intrude upon your wanderings but…yes I would very much like that! So, should we meet back here this evening?"

He wanted to know more about her. He called her CHARMING. Oh gods if this is a dream she hoped she wouldn’t suddenly wake up!

He bowed gracefully, playing the part to a T. He would have laughed aloud at her blushing maiden response to his question, if it wouldn't have ruined his plan. It was what he expected, of course, but it was amusing nevertheless.

"Yes, let us do that. But, oh, you are far too kind. Perhaps I can regale you with the tales of my travels once we rendezvous here?"

Rustic? Well she’d never been called that before. Old fashioned, traditional…but not rustic. It reminded her of catalogues that showed beautiful people wearing thick wooly scarves and jumpers standing amongst patches of heather and gorse.

"Oh my! That would be delightful Mr Wellington!"

But then she had to shake her head at the kind offer

"Alas I am only on a lunchbreak, I have to get back to work!" she said sadly. But then her eyes lit up again.

"But…i would be available after work if you are in the local area!"

no no no that was too forward to presume he’d wait around!

"but….I am sure you have many more important things to do than wait around for someone like me. You are very generous nevertheless…."

Now that she had mentioned it, she had said she was on her lunchbreak already, hadn't she? Of course, it could all be a clever ploy, but he wasn't going to force her hand, if she had one. He still couldn't tell if she was legitimate or not. For a moment, he wondered if it would be worth the trouble to wait for her to come around for such a engagement. Ah well, it couldn't hurt.

"Well, I did have other places I wanted to see in my walk around the city, but... I suppose I could go and look around while you are at work. Perhaps when you get off work, we could meet again here? As I said, I simply would love to learn more about you. You have such a charm about you."

Hattie snapped back to reality and shook her head as if trying to get water out of her ears.

"Oh my, forgive me I was miles away. The way you describe these far away lands…they just sound so wonderful to my mind!"

He paused, to consider his position for a moment. He hadn't yet found out much about if this woman was a spy set to track him or not. Really, all he had gotten was some admiration, which wasn't so bad. Still, he had to think of something to continue the conversation. Even if the woman was a spy or plant, at least she would be spending her time with him directly instead of watching from a far. In a moment, he thought of something that would no doubt wow Ms. Homely, one way or the other.

"You know... this conversation has been simply edifying. Your rustic appeal has enticed my senses. Would you like to take this conversation somewhere else... like say, a fine restaurant?"

A good amount of Tranze’s hope for this exchange to be an all-friendly one fell with her expression as her pompous accomplice mildly berated her about her answer. She mulled over his response in her head but before she could answer he had started on another matter. She simply sighed and shook her head, taking on his next question and beginning to mull it over.

"Sometimes it seems that no matter how hard you try to steer things your way and no matter how well things seem to be turning out, it just doesn’t work out in your favor in the end." She shrugged, "But personally, I think that throwing everything to the winds of fate- that may or may not even truly exist- and allowing them to blow you wherever they see fit is just a waste of life. I believe we do have free will- as that has been shown by many people in the world who decided to take their dilapidated lives by the reigns and turn them around to achieve an actual sort of success." She paused as her words began to run together in her brain. As much as she enjoyed trying to short the actual intelligence of this man- he was no complete fool, that was for sure. He was doing a pretty good job of making her think. "I believe the path of life is steered by a little bit of both- ‘fate’ and will."

"Ah ha... that is a fairly well thought-out response, Tranze. Perhaps you have more worth than a mere tailor, after all."

He smirked, pleased that he was able to work some genuine thought of her. If he was going to grace her with the gift of his presence, she'd have to show she had at least basic intelligence which seemed to be the case. By the time she had finished her response, the two were already at the park's entrance.

"Ah, here we are! The perfect place for philsophizing, if you ask me. Now that we are here... I have a challenge for you. Why don't you throw a deep, philosophical question in my direction, so that I can bombard you with the force of my intelligence? Be careful... for it has been known to be blinding."

Hattie was a little starstruck by the names Richard was reciting. Quebec, Montreal…they all sounded so magical and distant. She wondered if she’d ever get the time in her life to see them. He was right, just thinking of the places was enough to carry her away.

"They sound marvellous…" she cooed, her gaze wandering as she thought about far away lands and the people who lived there.

"Indeed. Far be it from me to judge others, but I really think more people could benefit from seeing the world."

For a moment, he was tempted to go on some sort of of pseudo-philosophical lecture, but he was a bit confused by her sudden change in expression.

"Are you well, Miss? I don't mean to send you reeling."

Europe sounded wonderful to Hattie’s ears. The different climate, cultures and cuisines had always intrigued her. Plus the locals sounded like friendly folk who encouraged tourists.

"Oh, I should like to visit all of those places! For a first timer It would be good to start on popular locations and work out to more extraordinary places, do you not agree?"

"That is a perfectly reasonable way of going about it, I feel. I believe you would be able to get a good feel for the ways of traveling without overwhelming yourself. The world is quite the interesting place, but it is possible to get lost within its grasp."

"Canada is also an option as well as Mexico, if you would like a less drastic destination. Perhaps you would fit in well in Quebec or Montreal."

"You are so fortunate to have the opportunity to travel and experience such wonderful places. I wish i had the time to do such a thing."

She had been encouraged by people to take holidays, but she wasn’t that well travelled and some inspiration might help her decide

"Tell me if you would, where would you recommend as a holiday destination for a first time traveller?"

"Ah, that is quite the interesting question. Speaking of a experienced traveler, there are many places you could take holiday at, and enjoy yourself."

He had to think for a moment. He actually had gone on vacation to some countries, but those were back when he was a mere child with his parents. He couldn't afford to look uncultured though, in front of someone.

"Since you already know French, France would probably be a fine choice. Their cuisine and culture are not to be missed, either. Italy is also a commonly chosen country for tourist to visit. The United Kingdom has the benefit of speaking our main language, but I would think you would like a little more challenge than that. Really, nearly any country in Western Europe would be a satisfying experience for one such as you, but those are the three I would recommend first."

"Trillingual!" Now Hattie was impressed. Speaking one other language was hard enough, but being fluent in MULTIPLE languages?

"Ah monsieur! C’est manifique!" she responded, clapping her hands. "Très bon! That is a wonderful talent indeed to take to such languages with such ease. Did you have specific training or did you live in those countries in the past?"

At her praise and approval, he struck a little pose, as if to say, 'Oh yes, that was 'C'est Magnifique. Thank you for noticing.'

"Ah, but of course. My travels as the drifting Philospher led to me to take extended stays in both Spain and France, and like a especially absorbent sponge, I absorbed the needed knowledge and became an virtuoso. Living in the country of whatever language you're studying and letting yourself be naturally exposed to it is really the best way to learn a language."

"Well…no…not much Japanese at all really." she mumbles “Though I can understand French and some German. The police have to be prepared to help any nationality on our home turf after all! How about you sir? Are you bilingual?”

He gave a pleasant little chuckle, and smiled smugly at Otoko before turning back to Hattie.

"Of course. That is perfectly understandable. As for myself, I am not bilingual. Indeed, I am actually trilingual. I am fluent in both French, and Spanish."

More like he had taken a course or two in both languages at the local adult learning center, but hey, that was basically the same as being fluent, right?

"If you'll allow me a chance to wow you. Ahem. 'Je m'appelle Richard Wellington' or if you prefer, 'Me llamo Richard Wellington'.

...

I just told you my name in Spanish and French. Impressive, no?"
