Sorry if youve talked about this before but... In the spirit of the month, do you think hollanov would go to pride? Like, Ottawa pride parade. And if yes, how do you think Shane, his internalized homophobia and his party animal husband would deal with it?

Oooh I do have some thoughts!

First off, I think Ilya has absolutely gone to pride before. It's not uncommon for NHL teams to make appearances at local pride events and individual players to be there and I assume the MLH would be similar. Boston Pride especially is huge. Unclear about Montreal because I'm not as familiar with the city or the Habs as an organization and the Metros/Voyageurs are definitely shown to be a staunchly traditional organization. If Shane went to Montreal Pride, he was there in a professional capacity and did not enjoy it for a variety of reasons.

It goes without saying Ilya went to Ottawa Pride w the Cens even before the team became the Gay Avengers.

Anyway, I think the first time they go to pride together is the summer after Shane's first season w the Cens. I don't think they take the Cup that year but they make a deep run for it. At that point, Shane will have been known publicly as a gay man for over a year and the novelty of him and Ilya being seen out and about as a couple has worn off. I also subscribe to Jay @scunthotter's headcanon that Shane fully crashes out during his first season with the Cens when everything really catches up to him but hopefully on the other side of that, he's shed a lot of the internalized homophobia he was dealing with before. I obviously don't think that's something anyone would be able to turn off like a switch but so much of that was fueled by fear of what people will think of him if they see him as a gay man and now... I mean they know he's gay and that he's gay with Ilya and they just made it to the Conference Finals sooooo (him hanging his whole self-worth on hockey is still something his therapist wants him to work on but Oh Boy)

So, Hollanov go the Ottawa Pride together even though Shane was somewhat reluctant. He gives all the reasons you would expect but Ilya shoots them down (and promises they can leave early if it's too much but he makes that promise with big pleading eyes so of course Shane caves, he's only human).

Ilya is already a peacock so he happily dresses like an absolute slut. Tight fucking pants slung way too low, strappy harness with no shirt (despite Shane's best efforts, Ilya has the stupidest sunburn lines when they make it to the cottage a few days after).

Shane is a lot more lowkey with what he wears. ("Come on, Hollander, you're gay now, yes? Act like it." "I'd say I was pretty gay when I-" "Yes, lyubimyy, we all know how well you suck a dick now put on a damn rainbow.") He actually feels like he's dressed unimaginably flamboyantly, but in reality he's wearing flat front shorts and one of Ilya's designer shirts. It's tight and he has 2 fewer buttons done up than he wants and it's just this side of sheer. (Also please remember that on this blog we believe Shane is bulkier than Ilya so when I say it's tight I mean the buttons left undone were out of necessity.)

They wind up having a good time! Some fans approach for photos of course, but they're all really nice. It's the off season so Shane is happier to drink and cut loose. The Cens have an official presence but Shane and Ilya are very specifically just there to go to Pride, not to do any team stuff. (They still hang out with a lot of the Cens while they're there. Like what, are they gonna avoid Harris and Luca? Nah.)

Anya goes with them in a matching harness + leash set that's covered in rainbows. Shane is the one who bought it.
