Ch. 6: In Which Adrien Narrowly Avoids Hamstercide
Marinette was in love. Adrien could tell.
He could tell by the way her eyes lit up and her face went soft with awe. He could tell by her blushing cheeks and her dreamy sighs and the whispers she thought he couldn’t hear.
Marinette was in love. With Sir Squeaks-a-Lot the hamster. And so was Adrien.
He cradled Squeaks in his palms, laughing at the tickle of his tiny claws. “You’re eager, aren’t you, Squeak-a-saurus Rex?”
“Yes, you are. You are so cute!” Marinette’s fingers, gently scratching the hamster’s head, froze. “I–I mean, Squeaks is cute,” she said quickly. “Not … not you.”
“Aw, you don’t think I’m cute too?” He pushed his lips into a fake pout. “I’m hurt.”
“No, no! I mean, yes, of course you’re cute! Or, like … not—you know, in a professional way. You’re professionally cute. Because it’s your profession. As a model.”
Adrien waggled his eyebrows. “Marinette, I had no idea you found me so irresistible.”
Her cheeks flushed. “That’s—that’s not what I said. You are very, extremely resistible.”
“Hmm.” Adrien lifted his hands to look Squeaks in the eye. “Do you think she’s lying? I think she’s lying.”
Squeaks nibbled at Adrien’s thumb. Adrien nodded solemnly.
“There you have it,” he said. “He agrees. Marinette finds me overwhelmingly cute and extremely irresistible.”
